Gothic Dreams

I am an artist who has an interest in the creative communities of fandom, especially that of the Bronies. I have many ideas for fanfics, a lot of them involving MLP in some shape or form.

Cheerilee and the young foals of Ponyville are on a school trip to the Royal Museum in Oxerford. There rests a curious looking invention, unlike anything else ever made. Cheerilee enlightens her pupils, sharing with them a story that recalls Equestria's golden age of the steam engine, when machines seemed to become abundant and find new ways to defy imagination.

This is the story about the machine called the Storyloom…

I think I would get into trouble for loudly informing said deaf and dumb supervisor, that if it wasnt for people with their heads in the clouds instead of up a local town, not only would those machines he loves to beat slaves with not exist, but he would be breaking rocks with his head instead.

Or more likely, feeding the Griffons.

And I dont mean by hand. :moustache:

6445498 Hahaha! Yes, I suppose that really is true! Though that point has made me wonder whether or not I may have made Iron Wall seem too imbecilic. Then again, maybe that doesn't work against the story at all?

Not at all, supervisor power is that of god. The thngs you are describing, I know people alive who worked there, I live next to site of one of the largest mills, and the next town over had a factory that Made those looms, that overall had a floor space of 50 acres, and it was the 5th largest mill in the company.

Standing on the shoulders of giants? I live in an area surrounded by historical technological and scientific Sequioas.

We also had Alice. :moustache:

This is what lead to the first Factory Acts, and the start of Health And Safety. Forgetting of course that Regulation needs t be regulated also ere it run wild and rampant. :pinkiesad2:

Im so trying to remember which author it was who came up with a new short story each night for his children, or nice. I thought it was Carrol. Which would really hit close to home.

Im wondering what the ponies used in industry, given animal fats and oils were a staple of the industrial revolution for a good many years?

Basic soap was caustic and animal fat, though alternatives would be sunflower, ground nut, and palm kernal oils.

6622092 To be honest mate, you've probably put a lot more thought into that than I ever did (more than the show's writers even!)
:derpytongue2:

I really enjoyed that. I hope you'll be able to finish it. I look forward to reading about Miss Bliss and the loom that can weave a story :)

6639394 Aww, thank you! I certainly hope I can continue with this as well. However, as I have posted in the blog, I am currently very busy with university work at the moment so I probably won't be able to write more until I have finished with what I need done for the end of the semester.
I don't wish to give this up as I have found this a challenging but enjoyable experience and I still have a decent amount of ideas for this website. Again, thank you for your kind words.

This makes me think of Hymn, Jerusalem. But I cant find a decent, simple link. :pinkiesad2:

For some reason Im thinking of Rosy and the Byron club, and when Clock works gets off the train theres going to be an altercation with a cart full of vegetables. My Babbages. :trollestia:

Really interesting story. Although makes one wonder if the Equestria that we see in the show is actually a Post-Industrial/Diamond Age society...

6796991 Please excuse me for the slightly wordy reply...
While I really liked the minor steampunk aesthetic of the idea I had for this story, I was also aware of how the technology may deviate a great deal from what we typically get from the series.
In the official book, The Art of Equestria, Jason Thiessen (supervising director at DHX Media) wrote; "Equestria is a fantasy storybook world that sits somewhere between the medieval period and the Edwardian era of the very early 1900s, if we had to specify. So all the technology that exists is somewhat limited to what could exist in that period. Every once in a while, we will break the rules to allow a piece of technology to exist that we wouldn't normally, due to the necessities of the story - or joke. These are few and far in between, and even then we limit how advanced it can be."
Another comment in the book from someone in DHX Media explains how they never include anything with a combustion engine and that seemingly more modern technology may be powered by something natural to the world of Equestria (i.e. street lamps in Manehatten may be lit by using fireflies, or even magic).
As I said before, I was aware that the technology referenced in my story may be too advanced for the show's typical setting. In fact, I was conscious of this possibility even before I had the information provided by TAoE. It was for this reason that I decided it would be best to tag The Incredible Storyloom under 'Alternate Universe'. Also, I hope that the reference to Industrial Revolution technology does serve at least some purpose to the story in carrying over a key theme concerning its main character.

6797165 I understand. Thank you for your reply!

And so leads the road to madness, of applying the art of art to the mechanics of machinery, that instead of rigid prose, one achieves fluidity.

Simply put. the quickest way to the heart, is through the eyes. :raritywink:

I've just read this entire story in one go, seeing as it grabbed my attention that much.

It's well-written and has a rather unique plot with wonderful characters whom I can really get behind. My only gripe, however, is the fact that you use single quotes for dialogue.

I'm looking forward to seeing future updates.

6882198 Thank you for taking the time to read my story, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate your comments.

I am glad you like the way it has been written so far, as its quality is something I have worried about for some time since I admittedly haven't had anyone read through before I uploaded it. :twilightsheepish:

It's interesting that you brought attention to the single quotation marks in dialogue, as I am certain plenty of novels use them in dialogue. Hopefully, it doesn't take too much away for you.

Anyway, I will try to keep updates on this story relatively frequent, especially since I would like to be able to finish it and carry on working on other ideas I have.
