If you haven't played the games, and/or have simply little to no knowledge of the Homeworld universe, I'd like you to point out anything that doesn't seem to make sense, or that appears to require inside knowledge to understand, in the comments. I will either alter the story to explain it, or simply explain it myself in response.

The timeline of the story is set prior to the finale of Season 4, nothing further from that in the canon has been implemented (no twilacorn, the Elements of Harmony are still intact, the Griffins aren't poor, and the Dragons aren't ruled by a tyrant).

Edited by AlicornPriest up to chapter 10, I believe.

Oh god, I wonder how many people will know what this cross over is?! :rainbowlaugh: More over, what about the Vaygr, Bentusi, Turanic Raiders, Kadeshi? :rainbowkiss:

By Saajuk! A Homeworld crossover! This better be good! Commence reading! I assume this means that Equestria happens to be Hiigara in this 'verse... does this mean that that the Burning of Kharak didn't take place, or did you just relocated the Taiidan Empire? ... maybe I should just read and find out XD

By the Martyrs of Kharak! Homeworld: Cataclysm got me into online gaming. I must take this fic, and cram it inside my eyeballs. . .

When I have time.

6192871 Darn it! I knew that was the spelling as well, I just didn't check if I'd done when I posted XD I have a bad habit of doing the wrong double-letter in words like that :twilightsheepish:

Hm, now I wonder where on Hiigara/Equus the Kushan will settle? I have no doubt that the Diarchy would shelter them once they find out just what those poor people have been through. I hope the Ponies can help the Sleepers when they awaken. Learning their world, their families and homes, even their entire Kiiths are gone... Many of the Sleepers committed suicide in canon and it might actually be worse this time since there're no Taiidan to go hunting down in retribution to distract some of them from their grief.

Despite their small numbers, the Kushan are militarily superior to everyone on Equus, the only advantages the natives have is their magic, more specifically the sun and moon and weather control. I suppose the only thing preventing the Kushan from establishing themselves as the new dominant power on the planet is the fact that without Celestia and Luna the world would perish.

6192980

I have a bad habit of doing the wrong double-letter in words like that

Then you'd have a hard time with Dutch. Just sayin'. . . .

6193025 'Tis a good thing I'm not Dutch then isn't it? XD I've never particularly needed to know any Dutch

6193042
[sarcasm]Integendeel, er zijn nogal wat Nederlandse mensen op Fimfiction.[/sarcasm]

6193047 I'm sure whatever you just said sarcastically was indeed very funny. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't speak Dutch. :facehoof: :rainbowlaugh:

6192525

Yes, a good question. How many people will know? First person I've showed it to wondered whether it's Homestuck...

6192629

I hope I'll manage to keep this interest!

6192749

I've been writing 'Hiigaara' quite some time myself. Though I did have problems with Saajuk too. Quite hard stuff, these Kushan names. Especially that you don't see those differences in the pronunciation in the game itself.

6192749

This is a really legit question to be asking, since the first part is cryptic to say the least. All right, I'm marking spoiler for this, since it'll spoil the 1st Homeworld game, won't spoil my story though. At least nothing that happens after the beginning.

What you're seeing in the 'prologue' or simply the 1st chapter, happens directly after the final Battle for Hiigara. The planet that's been razed into a desert is the Hiigara we know from the canon, but is it the Home that the Fleet has been so desperately looking for?

6192858

Hopefully you will ^^ The fic's rather finished actually. I'll update it periodically. Will also try to edit it up a bit as I post, to ensure no formatting problems when transporting from Gdocs.

6192980

Knowing what'll happen next, as I have the story written down now, I'd love to see how your theories change as the chapters progress. Your thoughts are exactly the same ones I had when starting the story.

6193257

This story really has me exited, reasons being:

1) How will ponies, Celestia and Luna in particular, react to the atrocious actions of the Taiidan empire's attempted genocide, and the events that occurred from from Homeworld 2?
2) How they react to the 'violence' of space war. I am not naive to think that Celestia and Luna havent seen a few wars in their time but I doubt its on the level of galactic conflict that affected the Hiigarens.
3) How Twilight, Celestia and Luna react to the level of technology that Hiigarens posses. (Kinetic turrets, Ion cannons, Laser cannons, Missles, Nuclear devices)
4) How Hiigarens react to Ponies :rainbowkiss:
5) Will the other Homeworld races come in to play? How about the Bentusi? Have we seen the last of them? And what about the Progenitors? Any more secrets to be found?
The possibilities with this kind of cross-over story seems almost endless. I think you have quite allot of content, history and cannon to work with that would make quite a good story.

There are just the few questions buzzing around, but obviously I don't expect you the answer them because, well, spoilers, but yeah. Once I get the free time, looking forward to reading this!

Also as a side note, I'm sooo keen to get the Homeworld re-masted title. Then get a PC good enough to run it. :trollestia:

Update:

Ahhh this makes me want to go and play Homeworld 2 modded now xD

:trixieshiftleft:

Better pull my old disc out. The joys of finding 2 year old discs in my room :twilightangry2:

6195856

I'll try to answer your questions without spoiling the content. Some things you'll have to find out yourself.

1. Attempted genocide? Well, I wouldn't say attempted. Also, so everyone can see it, hopefully, the crossover is with Homeworld 1. The events of Homeworld: Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 have not happened! Might be place for sequels ^^ Though I've written this story as a stand-alone, was supposed to be a one-shot even, but didn't work.

2. and 3. Yeah, how will they? A peace-loving nation of ponies, and princesses who have only a few times in their lives faced powers stronger than themselves.

4. Well, we've seen them react to life in the universe basing on the events of the first game. From the "There are other things in the universe!" when encountering Turanic Raiders, to "Oh, hello friendly giant alien blobs of fat wired to their ships!" when encountering Bentusi.

5. Have we seen the last of them? Also a good question. Have we? Who knows...

And yes, truth be told Homeworld Remastered's release was my original time for submitting the fic, but it didn't simply work. I preferred quality than speed, and from the one-shot it was supposed to be, it turned into a multi-chapter.

Anyhoof, the remaster's really, really good. It actually looks like something completely new, even if the game's the same. The interface has been fixed, the graphics is much, much more detailed (the Mothership now looks like a banana wrapped in leather, not just a normal banana ^^) and we can have units from both Homeworld 1 and 2 in the skirmish gameplay. Such a shame they didn't find the files for Cataclysm :pinkiesad2:

Still, I myself prefer to dig up the old CDs from Ebay. The clunky interface and the quite heavy maneuvering of these ships just reminded me a lot of Asimov's fiction, where each jump had to be calculated by the pilot and the like. Tons of old technology generally. Creates the atmosphere.

Also, new chapter should be up later today. And, well, later today might mean tons of different things, depending on the timezone...

The conversation within Fleet Intelligence steered away from the Griffins for the time being. Perhaps the laws of sociology had been broken somehow on this world, and there were more than two expansive species.

Of course there would be, given the arrival of the Hiigarans.

6196588

Just read the fic last night. Got to say, you replicated a very realistic situation of how the Mothership and Fleet command would communicate. It also clears a few things up when you say the events of Homeworld 2 haven't happened yet. Leaves a very interesting opening for the Vagyr, and those Progentior campaigns with Sajuuk, the Dreadnaught and all that fun-stuff (*cough* Totally not annoying Mover AI constructs that are a bitch incredibly good at swarming *cough*)

6196909

In this particular situation I was referring more to the state of events before the arrival of the Kushan. Mind you that they're not occupying the space on the planet, neither using up its resources in that specific point in time. And please, use spoiler marks rather than the quotations. It allows the people newer to the story to start without anything spoiling the further events.

6199559

Thank you! But mind you that the text in itallics is Fleet Intelligence, but generally it usually covers things that would probably filter through Fleet Intelligence, such as information about the status of the ships (under attack/landing) and the like. This rule, however, is overriden when Fleet Command assumes direct control over the ships (I'd say, the equivalent of having these ships selected and looking at them on the game screen) where we can see both Fleet Intelligence and Fleet Command both receiving sensory data, and Fleet Command giving direct orders to the crew of the ships, not to mention using certain tactics.

You do remind me that I'd still like to play over the Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 once again after the last time. Ah, and thank you for favouriting the fic! Thank all of you guys for that!

Chapter should be coming up later today.

6200824

No problem, this is a really original concept and your doing a great job at writing. Keep it up! :raritystarry:

Didn't read it it yet, but couldn't stand not clicking on something labeled Homeworld. Best RTS ever, let's hope this is just as good. :D

6203817

Thank you again!

6209002

For the moment, I honestly don't remember. :facehoof:
I don't have access to the books and general materials I had at the point of writing this chapter, but I think some research in Google will get you those 20 points guys. I think it was one of the WWII or post WWII treaties.

Also, 2 chapters because intermedio. I really, really didn't want to milk the main page so much to just post 300-word "chapter" when I've quite a few of them still.

6209050

Worked hard on being at least quarter as good as the original Homeworld writers. We'll see how it went. Thank you for giving my fic a chance!

*insert Spiderman "cancer" meme here*

6209050

I'm pretty sure Homeworld 1 set the stage for good RTS's, being released a couple years after the famous (and totaly ass-kicking-awesome-still-kinda-has-good-graphics-even-now-in-2015) Age of empires. Then followed Homeworld 2, which thankfully wasn't a eff up like some sequels are.

And for the record, who here has played Star Trek Armada 1? :trollestia:

6209086

Worked hard on being at least quarter as good as the original Homeworld writers. We'll see how it went. Thank you for giving my fic a chance!

I wouldn't call some game storyboard writers geniuses of literature, but this story in particular was good. You managed to keep up with them really well.

6211236
Homeworld is the best rts because of the 3D combat. It didn't set the trend though because this feature just died. Honestly, I belive the whole RTS genre is dieing slowly. They just don't make them how they used to. :fluttercry:

Also, Star Trek Armada "yay" !

“All right, you may turn the lights off now.” The chambers went dark. “No, not you, idiots! The Princesses.”

Now that's what I call dim-witted!

6211236

Most certainly! I've played Homeworld way after its release and I've never, ever seen anything like it. 3D gameplay, with no fixed plane! The ship AI being just ridiculously good, (all the circling of fighters and Corvettes) and collision detection making ships bump into each other. Most certainly fun. ^^ I've never, ever seen 3D gameplay in a game before, and since the Homeworld franchise.

6211773

Why, thank you! But I don't know about the RTS genre dying. While we prolly won't get any more of the good old Homeworld (although, who knows, maybe Shipbreakers works after all) we still have the second Starcraft, there were the Sins of a Solar Empire, and the Battle for Middle Earth games. Sadly, nothing outside of Starcraft was actually new and good in these times. Hopefully things will change.

6212439

Guys, give me some time! I've just posted a chapter, I need at least 10 minutes to formulate comment responses. Might post another intermedio later today.

If the Kushans keep upgrading like this, I don't think Equestria stands a chance against them! (Theoretically speaking, of course.)

6213249

Well, the old Homeworld featured free upgrades, so there's a possibility. Also, there was this mechanic of "We've seen our enemy use this. We can make something like that in eighteen minutes," in the Homeworld storyline missions.

I find it weird that the Kushan team never mentioned the religious theories for their displacement since I own Homeworld and there is a hundred-ish or so pages about the Kharaki society.

Anyway, keep upthe good work.

6211773

True, they just don't make good RTS's games now, except Sins of a Solar Empire. That series is a really good RTS, you should check it out. Something that majorly pissed me off is how game dev's made the sequels to great genres like Command and Conquer, and Star Trek Armada. STA 2 was absolutely a piece of shit, it had none of the good, original features and graphics of STA 1, (the Borg mainly, and how team colors affect ship looks), and C&C 4 was a load of crap as well. Had NOTHING from C&C 3, graphics were cartoon-y and bad looking, as well as none of the good gamplay :fluttercry:.

The only hope now (it seems) is for companies to release Remastered versions of old, awesome RTS games, but I don't think the RTS genre is done yet. They've also released a remastered version of Age Of Empires 3&4 (The Age of Kings and its expansions) and brought in a couple of new civilizations which are pretty cool, and there is also a remastered version of Age of Mythology, which I'm yet to try.

TL:DR, check out some of the new remastered versions of clasics and take a look at Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. you might be surprised :). (Hopefully Ironclad (Sins developer) will be releasing a Sins 2, which as 64 bit support and smoother game play)

6217973

I know for sure I had the "try the Star Trek Armada" filed somewhere in the back of my mind. Will try to acquire it. And on the Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion I must agree. I still remember some of the fights where you could take the most defensive nation, build up star bases for practically impenetrable defence, and then remember that you forgot to set up diplomatic victory as a possibility. Then all that wondering what you're doing during in a 48h battle without fights, just setting up resource relays and hoping you can bribe the enemy before they build up enough to tear you apart.

I must admit Sins of a Solar Empire are a specific kind of fun. Somewhat different with the star bases, lets you stagnate more, but still, fun.

6217606

I must admit, they've never really met circumstances to mention the fact, and Karan wasn't particularly religious to feel inclined to mention it, apparently. I still would've liked to see it. Maybe the Shipbreakers expands on it, it's supposed to mention the "Dust Wars" which is exactly what we're both talking about. And thank you!

plush enough to support my weigh?”

6223231
You're right. I didn't have prereaders or editors for this story, and there's only so much you'll notice yourself. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is getting interesting now. Can't wait to see what develops from here.

6223264
I have experience as a proofreader. If you'd like my services, I'm only one PM away!

I am a huge fan of the Homeworld series. I shall follow this with great interest! :raritystarry:

Both the Princesses and the Kushans don't seem to be dealing in good faith. At least the Kushans have an excuse of being prepared for any eventuality, but are making attempts at peaceful integration rather than outright conquering the planet. The Princesses on the other hand don't appear to have a consistent message about what they want.

6223300

I thought it was the "boring politics" chapter that nobody would like. I personally adored it, it was something I could call at least somewhat 'subtle' as both sides start growing wary of each other.

6223320
Since I don't want to delay the daily updates of the story, I'll keep that in mind for my next fic. But thank you nonetheless!

6223408

I hope I won't disappoint you. ^^

6223427

You're getting there, but not quite. I won't tell you what I had in mind while writing it, to have it free to interpretation by anyone, but I will probably sometime post an additional chapter/author's notes to note that and a few other things.

6218777

Oh the Starbases!

I used to love plopping done 2 TEC max'd out SB's next to each other with like 5 repair bays, 20 Gauss defense platforms and 5 hangers surrounded by 100 mines. hehe...

Great fun watching the AI suicide half their fleet before they realized you baited then from the planet across using your Titan. (I would send it solo into their main fleet, warp it back into my choke point, and watch their ships burn >:D )

Another thing to try out is the STA 3 mod for Sins, its quite appealing, though allota lag late-game.

6224982

Yup. I do feel I should return to that game sometime, and try out some mods. Same for Half-Life too, actually. And sorry for the slightly delayed update, I've a really crazy sleeping schedule.

The liquid cooling the computers of the Mothership boiled,

A bit awkwardly phrased. Try this:

The liquid cooling of the Mothership's computers boiled,

6227079
Essentially, both versions drive the point home. The "awkward phrasing" is more often than not the question of style, and that's most of the time left to the writer himself to set up their style. I know I sometimes write more complicated sentences than I should, sometimes try to cram up too much in one sentence, but essentially, it doesn't matter. Everyone is doing their way of writing, like Asimov putting too many commas into his sentences, (the way I sometimes do) or some fantasy writers putting multi-page paragraphs in their stories, or Dan Brown writing the same story over and over and over again...

Truth be told, the only aim of style/grammar/punctuation, is to drive the point home, the exact point the author had in his mind. If they fail to do that, they're redundant and up for the author to change.

Liquid coolant, perhaps would be a better term for it. Though really it shouldn't be boiling unless things were going horribly wrong with the computer systems, in which case the Mothership's killed itself XD

I do think you need a prereader for this though, as enjoyable as it is there are some wrongly-used words or mistakes or awkward phrasing. For instance:

The door opened as he walked and closed deafly behind him

Deafly? I don't understand what that's supposed to mean. Deaf means you can't hear, so how can a door close deafly? Quietly perhaps or silently. I suppose you might mean 'deftly' but a door can't close 'deftly' since that's usually an indicator of manual dexterity, as in 'he deftly caught the knife'.

The chapters are rather short too, you might want to be a bit more descriptive about things.

EDIT: Oh, by the way, will we see any of the dynamics between the various Kiithid of the Kushan? I'm pretty sure Karen is the Kiith-sa of Kiith Sjet, but I can't remember if any of the other Kiith-sa are mentioned. I suppose the Diamid wouldn't reform until after Landfall, since the old one was destroyed during the Burning of Kharak, but on the other hand since they're preparing to colonise Equus I should think that the Fleet would begin considering how they're going to rebuild the Diamid and the rest of their socio-political systems on the new world. They do have the time now, since the Great Journey is finally over and they don't have the Taiidani, Turanic Raiders and Kadeshi breathing down their necks.

6227557

Liquid coolant was probably the word I was looking for. I'm not too educated if it comes to electronics. I'll think about it and probably add it some time from now.

The door opened as he walked and closed deafly behind him

Ah, yeah, that... Well, I know what was the issue. My mind sometimes translates directly from my native, instead of using English words. That takes time to root out, and thus far I've been only mildly successful. The word I was looking for here was "dully." I corrected it now. And yes, I'm having a fellow writer look at the fic rather recently. No one has read the whole story fully thus far, besides me. What you're observing is a completely raw piece.

I'm sending Chicago Ted the link to the doc, preferably tomorrow, and wish to know whether I could ask for your help too, LuxAeterna. Thank you both for constructive criticism!

On the chapters being short, well, I must admit the fic was supposed to be a one-shot. I've a problem of going onward with stories indefinitely, often not finishing them. I must admit, this story was shortened a fair bit, the chapters aren't extended to not follow the parts of the plot I didn't want to work with at the moment. Essentially, while I am aware that it perhaps could've had a slightly slower pace, it was a question of not whether there'd be more of the story, but whether you'd see the story at all. I've a dozen or so examples of where aiming too high had left me with no drive for writing whatsoever. Same went often for having my editors (busy, busy people) work very slowly, often abandoning my work to months of stagnation, or leaving it altogether.

And on the inter-Kiithid dynamics: I must admit, this wasn't present in the first Homeworld game. There simply isn't enough Kushan to be divided, as one of the reasons for their division was the Question of Origin, not to mention the enormous numbers. Now, what's left of them is scarce and kept strictly together by Fleet Command. There are, though, some leftovers of that, as you might notice later in the dynamics between the ambassador unit and the rest of the fleet. These are minor things though.

Funny thing is, the Griffonstone episode pretty much shot down the Fandom's take on the griffins. How are they supposed to wage war when they're dirt poor?

6231277

The timeline is set prior to Season 4, not to mention I didn't really include anything from Season 5. If the timeline's set in a season, then anything we've explored since should not be taken into consideration. Not to mention this fic was being written back when Season 5 hasn't even started, I had no idea what they'd do with the Griffins really...

6227071

Nahs its fine.

Don't get internet again till another 2 weeks, so every time I manage to check this story there's always 3 chapters waiting. :rainbowkiss:

Once again sorry for the delay, needed to sort some things out. However, some things have been fixed by Chicago Ted, and, thanks to him, you're getting a new scene for the epilogue. Enjoy!

This has quickly grown into one of my favourite X-over stories. Not only because of its premise, but I really like the excecution too. It doesn't hurt that I played the original (okay, when I was 9-ish - the story runs didn't last long back then :P ). Still, can't wait to see what happens when settlements start popping up.

6237902 I cant help but agree with you there, this is marvelously well done. (it doesnt hurt that sci-fi empire and ponies mixing is one of my favorite types of fimfiction) and believe it or not, you're not the only one to have played it when you were 9.

they have a remastered version now, with updated graphics. made entirely by fans of the original game. so it's not a sequel, just basically a re-skin. it looks much perdier now
