On the Sliding Scale Of Cynicism Vs. Idealism, I like to think of myself as being idyllically cynical. (Patreon, Ko-Fi.)

This story is a sequel to Mechanical Aptitude

Six Elements of Harmony.

One hundred and eighteen Elements of the Periodic Table.

Let's see who blinks first.

(A collection of irregular short pieces focused on the ponies (and sundry) of Equestria dealing with the other fundamental building blocks of the universe -- more or less. Most of them will be part of the Triptych Continuum, which has its own TVTropes page, FIMFiction group, and a newborn character page: new members and trope edits are welcome. However, these can be read as standalones, and no knowledge of the others is required.)

Now with author Patreon and Ko-Fi pages.

Open Concept: any author who wants to write and post a TEoE story themselves has my express permission to go for it.

A... a bunch of us were talking about something like this on Skype, and you went ahead and did it.

That's... goddamn.

I'm onboard. 'Course, since you want us to post complimentary stories on our own accounts*, I may have to re-think Sweetie Belle and the Unununium.

*You learned a valuable lesson from watching my struggles with FimFic Authors, didn't you?

I promise that I'm not in your Skype, watching your brainstorming: my original inspiration is found in this blog post. We all tap the same river... and I didn't know about the already-existing art project mentioned there until someone told me.

Incidentally, I tried to put a periodic table up for the cover image, but the new auto-cropping is giving me nightmares.

Put mildly? Yeah. Also, I am now deliberately crashing programs in order to make my computer work. I don't want anyone else's efforts on here.

I had no idea what I was expecting, so this caught me by surprise. Funny little story.

Oh, dear.

'"'Cutie Mark Crusaders chemical engineers! Yay!' were the last words uttered by any living thing at the location that is now known as the Ponyville Crater..."

6007429 That links to the story.

And the main thrust of our convo was about them commenting on finding the element bismuth and how edgy it is, really.

BISMUTH, THE EDGIEST ELEMENT OF ALL!

6007458

*sigh* It's a typo-plagued night. Fixed the link.

So bismuth is the edgy element of edginess? Huh. I thought it would have been one of the radioactives. "I'm so edgy, everypony who gets near me dies."

6007485 No problem.

And to give you an idea of just how edgy we're talking, here's some bismuth for you:

Oh, it's a fungus. I must confess that when I started reading this I thought that Luna was suffering from Vitamin D deficiency, and had a case of Royal rickets :derpytongue2:

Okay... so Oxygen 'cause it's the 8th atomic element... And Carbon 'cause diamonds = gems, right?

Sorry for explaining the joke...

Oh! It's also a rebuttal on there being any 7th Element of Harmony (Love)!

Ha. I had forgotten all about this! Could have some at a better time, I would have loved to taken part, but I just don't feel like writing much anymore. However, I eagerly await more.

OH... This means that Joyous Release, isn't infectious... or perhaps she is and they cured it... Darn... this chapter reveals nothing...

So, where is the fresh air coming from? Is she redirecting it from one orifice to another?! Or really good filter technique?

So, has the chains method been refined in light of new knowledge, or was it always like that? I thought the Old Way would be just keeping her there until the veriform ran its course?

Typos:

' it" '

"As soft as I could 'made' them", should be 'make'.

6007485
Nah, radioactives can be great fun for gardening.

So is Celestia zapping her with Sunlight or something, at the end?

The moment I read selenium I knew this was going to be good.

"...did you... want to know anything... about oxygen?"
Pinkie looked at Twilight. The doors. Twilight again.
She smiled.
"Sure!"

So you went ahead and did it… and it was (is!) glorious.

Do continue.

Scootaloo felt a tingling in her flank, and eagerly looked as with a twinkling of magic, there appeared an image of ...

...a blue-skinned biped with multiple arms, apparently in some sort of dance pose, surrounded by a ring of fire.

"Look cool...but what the hell is it?"

The fiery mushroom pushed upwards, towards the stratosphere.

6008539

"You pale piece of chicken's ear!"

(This is either the greatest or most horrible crossover prompt ever.)

6008539

Would that make Sweetie Belle Vishnu and Apple Bloom Brahma?

6008604

Reference not found, please reenter data

So now, the ponies cannot industrially liquify nitrogen. I wonder whether Princess Luna can liquify Neon, Hydrogen, and helium.

6008613

Well, as far as I know Oppenheimer was the only Manhattan project member who claimed to have become a Hindu deity, although Teller certainly made a good try at becoming some sort of God of Destruction after WWII.

6008632

Ah, OK. And to completely infuriate people, put Flash Sentry in the Remo role. :twilightoops:

6008699

I'd keep Remo's role with Scootaloo. Because let's face it: if you went around Ponyville asking "Which filly do you think will destroy the world?", nearly every hoof is going to be pointing in one direction.

6008727
Well, heck. I quite forgot Remo was supposed to be in the process of becoming an avatar or host or whatever of Shiva in the stories. Perhaps I should return my nerd card.

6008629

I wonder if she does it by opening some sort of portal to the moon or space, in which case she could cool things down to about 2-3°K

And here I was thinking "oh, well, great excuse to take several weeks off from Lunar Court, which Luna seems to hate anyway". Go figure.

But I really like the way you explained it to me! I can repeat that to just about anypony else and know they'll believe me!

Optimist...

6008846 It's probably the idea of a month or so spent in total seclusion while smelling like death that she finds unappealing.

Estee is doing a thing! Estee is doing a science-themed thing! Please accept these overenthusiastic sentences in lieu of a parade. I'm eagerly looking forward to more.

6008727
With a few a bit off to one side, at the sweet little unicorn who just set cereal on fire or the innocent-looking earth filly who founded the Chaos-Making Catastrophes.

6008727 TBF, on their own they aren't that dangerous. It's when they're together that things happen. On the other hoof, they spend most of their free time together.

6007639 Actually, according to a video done by The Brony Notion, the 7th Element is wielded by Sunset Shimmer, and it's the element of Friendship.

This is honestly the most adorable thing I've read all month.

Actually, you could probably make an actual educational TV spot about this. Minus the mention of bar hookups. Twilight explaining the elements (of the periodic table)

come on Luna, you wouldn't need to rearrange your schedule. Put a skylight in your room and get a really good sleep mask. Bam, you're resting and you're getting sun

6009190

There's always been an Element of Friendship, though - Twilight's Element of Magic. Because Friendship is Magic!

6009483 That's what he was saying. Since twilight said that the Magic of Friendship is everywhere, and Sunset is sort of a substitute Element of Magic... it's your turn to put 2 and 2 together.

Selenium is the Lunar Element. Helium is the Solar Element.

Considering the Elements apparently came from the Tree of Harmony, I think it could have bloomed with different Elements at different times. Like the Crystal Heart. That's the Element of Love. And maybe those Virtues that were in the comic's alternate universe. Temperance, Humility etc.

it's funny tosee how some STILL call the min six the elementsof harmony even though they aren't

Very nice. I really like how you threw in a whole lot of world building in that Twilight monologue about nitrogen.
And Pinkie taking on the mantle of Kindness (that very special kindness Twilight craves) for a little while in the end is adorable... and the whole thing is beautifully in character. Also Rarity and carbon.:raritywink:

6009586 I think that was creative...I agree that would be appropriate cover art.

6009996
The infusion of Rainbow Power changed that.

6010832 but still no elements of harmony. those were given back to the tree
