After a horrible failure at the Battle of the Bands, Sonata and Aria went back to their apartment while Adagio was plotting for revenge. She cried in rage and escaped to the rooftop of an old building, and saw a happy Sunset Shimmer floating in the air with her fiery phoenix wings. And Adagio thought of a brilliant plan.

Only you've ( more like everybody) has forgotten that the mane ( or main, not really sure how it goes) 6 from the human world got their magic through twilights element while sunset does has equestrian magic which is obviously powerful compared to the human world so that is how sunset got her magic from the battle of the bands because she was from equestria where everypony has magic embedded in them
Other than that great story for an alternative view ^ ^
