Personally, I think Sonic would beat Rainbow Dash in a race. However, I think Sonic should purposely lose the race with her because he's a nice guy and he made a bet with the Wonderbolts that they'd have to let Rainbow join them if she won. It just seems like something he would do.

OK, adding this to my read later list.
First things first, a race between Rainbow Dash and Sonic was inevitable, so lets go through the figures.
RD: She can fly at a top speed of almost Mach 5 (Roughly 5 times the speed of sound.) That is when she is pushing herself to her absolute limit, but when she hits Sonic Rainboom, her speed practically doubles. She is unencumbered by the need to avoid obstacles because she can just hit the air, however she does lack one thing when she is flying that fast: Agility. Her ability to dodge and move effectively at speed have been shown to be lacking several times in the series. So if she needs to make a sharp turn, it ain't happening.
Sonic: Can travel at roughly Mach 3 on a good day although his top speed is actually unquantifiable as he seems always to be accelerating, he just doesn't have a long enough track to hit his top speed. He is stuck on the ground, which can pose a problem, but at the speeds he can run at it kind of doesn't matter. Also, he has several ways of moving faster than his top running speed. As any fans of the classic games will remember, sonic can gain pickups to increase his speed, and his spin dash is about twice as fast as he can run. Regrettably he can only spin dash over short distances, but he can use it to best Rainbow Dash's top speed. Then there's his secret weapon: SUPER SONIC! Super Sonic is so fast that he can actually move at something close to the speed of light, which gives the impression of teleportation (This ability is most clearly seen in Sonic Unleashed during the opening movie where supersonic seems to teleport all over the place). If Sonic gains his powers as Super Sonic, then there probably isn't going to bbe much left of Rainbow Dash to win the race anyway. Furthermore, because of Sonic's constant exposure to the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he has become an embodiment of Chaos, which actually means that he can use every single one of the powers that his somewhat darker counterpart (Shadow) can use, so Sonic can use Chaos Control without the need for the emeralds at all. He never does, but it is implied in various instances (Most notably Sonic Adventure 2 and any other game where Sonic seems to just randomly appear out of thin air).
So based on pure logic, Sonic should win the race, but I guess I will have to read the story to find out.

But seriously, no. no they're not, and for good reasons.
first off, Sonic would have to be on a straight lane for a REAL sonic booms to happen. That's just how they work. Last time I saw sonic ever do a Sonic boom, would be Sonic Generation, but even then, it's just a TAD faster than normal. In fact, Classic Sonic's Spindash felt faster.... HUH.
Rainbow Dash can FLY, meaning she doesnt have to dodge any terrain. And to pull it OFF...

The biggest difference between them, was what happen AROUND them.
Rainbow dash not only got her cutie mark this way...
But she was able to get multiple ponies her cutie marks, just by THE EXPLOSION ALONE.

So, calculating, Rainbow Dash helped six ponies and Spike (Helping Twi hatch him), all the while pulling off her own rainboom, before even talking to them.
Sonic didnt do any of this. Case CLOSED.
BTW, Classic Sonic feels faster in Sonic Generations than Modern does. That's quite the sad, if millions of people also share my feeling.

But it's because of the rambling of the argument whether Rainbow Dash or Sonic is faster, I don't want to add or remove anything into the argument that is taking place in the comments box about speed but I just was to also add... didn't Sonic travel at the speed of light one time? I remember seeing it in one of the games or that stupid Sonic-X show that he traveled at the speed of light or something. And it's also to do with the fact that both communities seem to clash whenever there is mention of Ponies or Sonic anywhere on the Internet, seeing loads of deranged Bronies and Sonic fans arguing about which is better is pretty childish but it's pretty entertaining to look at, especially if it's on DeviantART.
Either way, I like the story and the overall plot, but I just don't like the actual characters that are being crossed over.

718512 Basically what I'm saying here is that Sonic is NOT slow. '06 made him slower then he actually is. But now, he's once a sound breaking speedster. In fact, he now actually runs faster now then he did in the genesis games. Those games were filled with obstacles that could easily slow him down and restrict his speed. The stages were more like obstacle courses rather then speedways. Now, it's all about moving fast. Sonic can go beyond mach 1 easily. Overall, he and Rainbow Dash would be about neck and neck for the most part, but I think Sonic could still beat her.

718586 Those courses were painfully hard and took MUCH effort to complete. In some areas, it seemed almost imposible, and that's not even mentioning the fact that you COULDN'T save the game. If you lost all lives, you'd have to start all the back at the very begining of the game regardless of how far you've gotten. It was mainly jumping form one place to another without hardly getting a chance to actually run. The stages were so hazardous that it is EXTREMELY easy to die. I couldn't be able to beat the entire original Sonic game in one try.
Never the less, the stages now are still hazardous, but not as constricting. You can still enjoy the excitment of moving fast and drifting while leveling enemies, breaking through walls, and what not.
Plus Sonic's entire concept was to go fast. It's what he was designed to do, but the original Sonic only felt fast in a select few areas. The rest of the time, he felt rather slow. Modern Sonic, on the other hand, can boast at high speeds like a jet plane while still be able to maneuver through tight spots, jumping from platform to platform, and smashing any enemies that come after him.
Classic Sonic wouldn't stand a chance against Dash, but Modern Sonic could.

Seriously, it's like in Castlevania, where you get cheap thrills for doing absolutely nothing, when back then, all I had was my wits. In the new games, much like Sonic here, we get a buncha little rewards and cheap thrills from mowing enemies down. In classicvania, all i had, was my whip, and my senses.
There's nothing Special about Modern Sonic. They didnt ever TRY to make his levels exciting, they DIDNT. EVEN. TRY.
Overall, the Modern Sonic gameplay, is literally eyecandy for people who feel as though they cant play a game simply for the challenge. they stripped sonic of all difficulty. The games are waaay too easy, in fact, they give KIRBY a run for his money. That. is. sickening.
Classic Sonic will always be the better over either Sonic because he had more purpose than just running in one direction. I felt rewarded for those hazards, and when I beat all the sonic games under one sitting, I felt a sense of achievement. Modern Sonic spoiled you.
