Saph

I really have nothing to put here at the moment.

T

“My foster sister just got here,” Lyra said. “Her name’s Vinyl Scratch, maybe you’ve heard of her?”

Octavia was about to say how ridiculous Lyra was being, and there wasn’t a chance in the world she’d have met this pony before, but for some reason the name did seem familiar to her.

Hmmmm...

Intriguing. I will be watching this.
*Sweeps cloak and vanishes into the darkness*

Looks like a promising start.

Even ponies who don’t have musical cutie marks can become exceptional by practice, what makes you think anyone would take a second look at you?

But I'd bet you that a pony with a musical cutie mark would outperform one without 4 out 5 times (or more). Even if a cutie mark wasn't a sign of high talent, though, it is a sign of devotion, and any potential employer would give more weight to someone who has a symbol that she'll dedicate herself to the job printed on her ass. And since Equestria doesn't have computers and advanced composition programs, actual living performers are still necessary, and it looks like the majority of music we've seen on the show is instrumental... sure, that means there are likely proportionately more ponies gunning after music jobs than there are people in RL, but there would also be more job openings.

But the phrasing... no matter how you look at it, a pony with a musical cutie mark would be more likely to succeed in a musical career than a pony without (although I suppose a certain crowd might really like a pony that doesn't have one for the novelty of it), and anypony is going to be more successful in the field related to their talent. It sounds like her mother is saying that everything and everypony is stacked against her--that she has no positive attributes to bring to the table... does Octavia have a different cutie mark in this story?

Because if her cutie mark and talent are still what they are in canon, then I really can't think of any remotely adequate explanation except that her mother holds some sort of grudge against her. Even the "I want you to get a good job and not waste your life following your dreams" excuse became useless as soon as Octavia pointed out how happy and successful her mother was in her life.

Unless her mother is a good actor and they are secretly balancing on the brink of poverty. Or Octavia, unknown to her, has some freakish disease/curse that will somehow make playing music dangerous to her at some point. Or she has magically suppressed traumatic memories related to music (could explain why she can't remember Vinyl). Is her mother also an earth pony? If she's a unicorn, I could see prejudice playing a role in assuming her poor, magicless daughter would never be able to compete when she only has those clumsy hooves of hers (considering how we sometimes see wings used like hands, a pegasus might also be able to pull this off).

I'll be interested to see what the conductor's up to. If he just dislikes Octavia that's one thing, but often in school fics you find that the one making things hard for their student is actually trying to push the talent they see into the foreground and help the kid succeed. Either way, it would make for some nice character drama.
I also want to see what Vinyl's like. Although there are some commonalities that run through most depictions of the characters, I always like seeing what unique aspects or combinations of traits an author will bring to the table.

Octavia's comment about her mother being happy in what she does was meant to be uh sarcastic I guess? I might need to reword that paragraph slightly. It needs to tie in later so I hope I can make it clearer. As for Octavia's cutie mark I assure you it is the same and I'll try my best to make her mother's reasoning more clear later.

Thanks for the read!

On another unrelated note I will be adding the 'Sad' tag because it should have been on there from the start and I thought I had it. Comes into effect probably next chapter which is on its way hopefully this weekend.

So you do know here then!

Her?

Keep it coming

Thanks :]

Fixed, thanks. You would expect in copying from paper to a word doc it would be the middle that had obvious mistakes not the first sentence...

“I’m gonna call OCtavia now,”

Also bon bons in ice cream, not surprised Lyra likes that hehe

Fixed. I tried having some fun with this chapter.

Keep out guests company, will you

Keep our guests company, will you

Oh please do continue this! I love it so far!

Hopefully getting more done on this over the summer, only about two hundred words into chapter 3 because I had to focus on academics for a while. I should be able to get another chapter out by the end of next week? Maybe sooner.

Thanks : ]

6130949 Oh I can't wait! Please don't stress over it though! take your time :)

Why did Octavia give up the violin? Taste in music can change, or the parts she most wanted to play might have been in lower octaves than you'd find in a violin. Perhaps she wanted to master the entire violin family instead of solely the violin? Or did her mother take it away when she decided to start discouraging Octavia from music?

I guess we'll have to find out ;o. It got to the point where I'm going to have to read everything I wrote again and hopefully remember why I did certain things. Chances are my reasoning for it probably has changed already from it's original intent

6206192 Authors can change their mind and decide to take a story in a different direction than they had originally intended. With more reading and/or writing comes a deeper understanding of story structure, flow of conversation, and character development, and every exposure to something new (or deeper looks at what they've already seen) provides an opportunity to refine or change an idea. So long as you keep an eye on what you've already done (so as to avoid contradicting yourself, that's always bad), it's perfectly natural to change intentions over the course of the story.

"like I wanted you do?” You probably meant 'to.'

It's pretty interesting so far, can't wait to see more.

Lyra’s voice game though the phone

As Vinyl tried to get up thought,

“I don’t see you mark at all yet.”

5829737 foreshadowing lol:rainbowlaugh:

Mmm I wonder if this fic will come to life if I poke it with a stick long enough...:trixieshiftright:

...maybe? Been obsessed with some other fandoms recently and haven't done any writing in a while. It might happen if I sit down and just do it, but that's pretty much the hardest part.
