I didn't name the elements or Celestia's new protege, since that's outside of Twilight's (and therefore the story's) interest. I reread through the story and can't quite find where that impression would be obtained? But I suppose, since I don't offer evidence for or against Derpy becoming an element... I guess it's always possible?

Well, it's only heavily implied what occurred, but here's how I read it.
This is what we know:
1) Twilight is a shut-in
2) Twilight doesn't go to Ponyville b/c shut-in
3) NMM goes all eternal night, and Twi hardly notices (shut-iiiiiin)
4) Twi finally notices, does her research and it's easy b/c she knows the library
5) She doesn't do anything since shut-in, and simply reports to Celestia.
6) Spike's fire fails b/c Celestia is AWOL from reality
7) Instead of saving the world, she decides to send the report by mail.
8) Mailmare comes conveniently busting in, completely lost.
9) Twi gives Derpy the letter for Princess Celestia
10) Sun comes up
11) Celly sends Twilight a letter saying "Thanks for saving the world sorta, also you're a shut-in"
12) Twi is like "It's official! Now I can be a shut-in and nopony can stop me!"
There's a wee bit of a gap in logic between events 9 and 10. A lot of things could have possibly happened, but none of them really make sense. Here's my best guess at how the unwritten events occurred:
1) Derpy got lost (again) looking for the princess, and crashed into Dash's cloud house
2) Dash got the others together b/c she's really good at rallying forces for some reason
3) They have a wrestling match to get at Derpy's letter b/c the princess is gone and the world is ending vs mailpony confidentiality
4) Using Twi's research, they go into the Everfree forest, and also drag Derpy along for ...reasons...?
5) They endure the trials easily since Twi really never did anything useful in the first place: 3 pegasi carry 3 not pegasi,
- away from the landslide
- over the river
- over the broken rope bridge
6) Confront NMM, elements break, all cackling and evil
7) They all realize their roles as the elements, all floaty shiny glowy but like "but what's the sixth element? oh noooo"
8) Derpy's like "ooh, pretty magic!" and then zap, zoom, NMM gets rainbowed into submission
9) Sun rises, Celly really doesn't know what the fuck just happened.
10) Gives up on Twi, sends her a final letter.
If Derpy isn't the element of Magic, then who was? Random Zecora? Mai OC? The five couldn't have done anything against NMM without a sixth, even if they had Twilight's research. Without Twilight's research no team of six ponies could have known to go in the forest, so it's obvious Derpy had to deliver it somewhere, but there's no pony who would take Twilight's place then, except for her.
6618333 Wow! You're reading into this a lot further than I wrote. Like, a lot further. I wrote a shallow puddle of a story and you're diving deep into to the Marinara's Trench. Mind, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, since it's important to think critically about your entertainment (so I certainly applaud you for that!)! That said... I guess whatever you want to believe is true because nothing is true and will likely never be verified 'cause I have absolutely no interest in doing anything else for this story. This is as complete as it will ever be. Forever. This fic was just a joke, but I guess if you want to consider the outside aspects, then... sure. Sure, Derpy is the Element of Magic. That's exactly what happened. Or didn't happen. I don't know 'cause it's far outside the (very simple) scope of this story. *flails*
tl;dr - I can't say that's not what happened, because I don't care.
