To the casual observer, my earthly life would've seemed overly dull. Monotonous, even. I'll admit, they'd be right. Almost every day was the same routine; go to work, go home, stay up too late, fall asleep. Anything interesting was entirely fictional, existing only in the books and games and songs I'd entertain myself with.

But that was before my earthly life stopped being so Earthly.

Rated teen for language, violence, and sexual themes.
Yes, this is HiE. Yes, this is anthro. No, this is not a clopfic.

This is really good and I love the references (especially the month Python one)

5662423 Ask, and ye shall receive. Eventually. I want to take my time on this, make sure I've written everything as well as I can. Thanks for giving it a look!

i like were this is going :D

A larger, broodier part of my mind shouted "I AM THE NIGHT!", then swooped down from a gargoyle and punched the first part in the face.

I like the cut of this guy's jib.

In any respectable army, Armor would have just earned himself a reprimand, possibly a court martial.

Im surprised he hasn't met luna by now.

GIVE ME MOAR!!!

DO IT! DOOOOO ITTTT!

Amazing story. It is like a black hole sucking me in.

XP

i look forward to when he gets out of the hospital

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! :pinkiehappy:

5677679 By the sound of it, Twilight still lives in Canterlot, That means this is before the first episode, So unless Jack get's himself bannished to the moon he can't possibly meet Luna yet

Oh my god! This is so awesome I can't wait to read more!

That's so me if this ever happened. It must be a lovely sight, and I'm looking forward to more of this. A great chapter indeed.:raritywink:

i would love to explore all over the place and see all the sites! it would be so cool ^_^

Thank you so much for making another chapter if this story. I really missd John's adventures. Hopefully, the next chapter will come soon.

oh dear god i forgot how funny this was.

"It's always good to laugh at our mistakes,"

It's even better to laugh at other people's mistakes. It makes you feel superior.

So Celestia's got Willpower(my name for the Dresdenverse property of gods that allows them to force mortals to kneel in pain by concentration)? Ugh. Are you seriously making her a god? I was really enjoying this so far.

6191650
Actually, that was just something a few steps down from the Royal Canterlot Voice.

Jack's just... sensitive, magically speaking.

And Celestia's not a god(dess). That'd make her far too one-dimensional.

She is a demigoddess, though. Virtual immortality, the ability to move the sun, yadda yadda.

Doesn't mean that she can't make mistakes.

Or that those mistakes don't haunt her...

6191650
Thanks for checking out the story.

Hopefully the contents of the next chapter will keep you interested, and it's good to see a fellow Dresden fan.

6192006 gods fuck up too. Exhibit A: all of Greek Mythology(seriously, the Titans were much better gods). Exhibit B: the Tuatha de Danan Exhibit C: The Aesir and Vanir. Anyway, in cannon MLP:FiM, moving the sun clear not Divine-level sorcery. Before the Regal Sisters, normal unicorns moved the sun and moon. Not to mention you don't have to be a (demi-)god to be nigh-immortal. My proof? The White Court.

6192029 MY NAME IS LEGION, FOR WE ARE MANY!!! Also, isn't this story in the Human Magic group? Are we gonna be seeing the wizardry any time soon? Or at least sorcery? Also, please have him not let Twilight do experiments. BTW, besides Harry, who's your favorite Dresdenverse character?

6192006 He does have a point she isn't really a goddess but she can live a long time and she can be killed

6192039 6192042
The White Court is a good point, but it's also a good counterpoint. It's explained that wizards can live for an unspecified (as far as I can remember) length of time, but Mother Nature still hits them with the age hammer. Celestia's appearance doesn't age as far as we are aware, though I like to think that an alicorn's appearance is dependent on how much magic is available to them, hence why Luna's appearance changes between seasons 1 and 2.

Also, in the fics I've read that reference unicorns controlling the day/night cycle, it's never been just one unicorn by him/herself; there's always been a council or something similar. The only possible exceptions would be Clover, Starswirl, or perhaps Sombra; all unicorns of extraordinary magical power or skill.

Honestly, I don't know how groups work, and I'm a little afraid to ask.

And no, we won't be seeing Jack slinging any spells, or performing any thaumaturgy in this story. That doesn't mean that others won't though, so the guy's gotta think on his feet.

As for my second favorite character? Oof, that's tough. If it has to be only one I'd go with... Murphy. Tiny, but fierce. Mouse and Michael Carpenter are tied for third.

6192145 I think they said that wizards live about 400 years somewhere. And in what way is the White Court a good counterpoint? They're mildly demonic, not even remotely divine, and don't age past their prime, so long as they feed their Hunger. Just like alicorns, they change based on how much power they've got available. And that's in fics. We don't actually have any real reason to believe that it took a Council to raise the sun. Not to mention that it's Celestia's special talent, and pretty much the only spell we've seen her do, besides telekinesis and laser beams. Naturally, with a thousand years of practice, it'd get a bit easier. Too bad about the Thaumaturgy though. And Murphy? Huh. I like Bob.

6196666
Sorry, I meant White Council.

I was thinking of the term "Unicorn Court" at the time, so the two kind of crossed streams.

Also, as I've stated in the appendix blog post, I'm drawing from few headcanons and fic references here and there, but I'm mostly sticking to the show and comics, which usually have a great deal of room for interpretation.

Bob might be fourth, but then again, Molly Carpenter, Waldo Butters, Charity "the Battleaxe" Carpenter... there's so many good characters to choose from.

6196713 ah, the Council. Yeah, completely different. In a few ways, anyway. Only a handful are god-touched. Some are Distant Scion(the official Dresden Files RPG handbook mentions that spell casters abilities are usually "long forgotten inhuman bloodlines" or Faustian Deal, rewards from various deities, etc. Not that bloodlines can't gain sorcery randomly without any inhuman aid, it's just really uncommon, even among the already-rare practitioners.) And yes, there are many great characters. That's why we come back for more.

I referred to my mother as my landlady whenever conversation turned towards living arrangement. I loved my Mom to death, but telling people that you're twenty-one years old and still living with your parents is embarrassing, no matter how much rent you pay.

Not really, son. Help around the house and assist in bringing money in, and there's jack shit to be ashamed of. You're not forced to starve in an empty kitchenette just for the hubris of saying you're "independent".

I'm going to be brutally honest here: you can probably cut everything before the scene at the book store and this story would lose nothing. In fact, it would probably be better as we would get to the plot we came here or faster. I recommend listening to The Writing Excuses podcast as they've done several episodes on the beginning of stories and mentioned how they've cut sections or even chapters from books to get to a better beginning point.

Looking forward to the next chapter!

I'm so happy to see this story again. Nightmare Moon's surprise cameo was an interesting twist. Hope to see the next chapter soon.

I'll give a like, please post Sooner

An Update! Yay! :yay:

But.. Now I'm going to have to wait a month or two to get more! Booooo! :unsuresweetie:

6456199
6458245

Thanks for checking out the story! I'll try to post again within the next month, but I won't make any promises because, y'know.
Life.

The bitch...

6458997 Shhh!...she can hear you!
It only makes sense that life is a woman, only a woman can cause us that much misery and still make us come back for more.

I guess it makes sense that Nightmare would still be able to dreamwalk after Celestia learned how to keep her out.

Can't wait for more!

Umm you do realize thou is used on someone beneath you right? You is actually the formal way of addressing a better of equal.

Good job keep it up see you next chapter:twilightsmile:

I can't wait to see how those lessons go.

6558414
According to what I've read, "thou" and its variations are singular, and "you" is plural. I may have gotten confused about whether or not "thou" is used to address those of higher status; I wrote that part at midnight after a long day at work. My apologies.

Can you just pretend Early Modern English works that way here? Please? Do it for Pinkie? :pinkiesad2:

This chapter was awesome and one of the best so far. I really enjoyed Jack's interaction with Celestia as if they were close friends or mother-son. I also like the concept of the Aura sense and I'm curious to see how Jack would interact with Twilight now that he's her student. Hope the next chapter comes soon.

I just discovered this story and it is unbelievably awesome. Thank the Darkness that it is still alive and being continued. Look forward to updates.

so it's kind of like mage-sight and 'darkvision' from dishonored then?

At the moment, it's more like a big panic button wired directly into the brain that only works if a pair of twenty-sided dice from Hell land on an even number.

For the sake of realism in my story about magic, talking ponies, and interdimensional travel, Jack's cool (and eventually useful) new ability is going to be more burden than blessing for a while.
