I think some of the names are pretty obvious and carry-overs from A Bushel of Apples.
Liliana is Lighting Gem's counterpart. I wanted her to have a really feminine sounding name to contrast her personality.
Hawk is Tomahawk. It's short for Hawkins, though.
Petey is Party Popper.
Sylvia is Slide Rule.
Brad is obviously Flash Bulb. this also makes him Brad Jr. for obvious reasons.
Balthazar and Wilhelmina are Pound and Pumpkin Cake. I probably should have gone for "P" Names to keep their theme, but I liked the idea of the Cakes giving their kids really weird, old fashion names.
When was the last time you heard of someone named Wilhelmina? Outside of Dracula? or Indiana Jones?
Same with Balthazar.

I think I would have gone with Troy and Gordie for Pound and Pumpkin. Troy, for Troy ounces which are used for measuring the weight of gold and Gordie because pumpkins are gourds.
A few things need explaining.
Hasbio is a throwback reference to the Fluffy Pony fandom.
The backstory was that they were genetically engineered pets that Hasbro made to sell to MLP fans.
Then PETA freed them, unleashing an army of fast breeding, colorful horses with the brainpower and personalities of spoiled 2-year olds.

I went back and forth over what to call the MLP counterpart.
My Lovely Horse won out.
Sarah is Applebloom, and Rylance is Rumble.
Zuri is Zecora. it's a Swahili name meaning "beautiful".
As for how she's dressed, I thought over it for a while. Most art of a humanized Zecora has either her nightmare night costume, or the barbarian bikini, neither of which seem appropriate.
So she goes with tough denim and shirts when working in the everfree, as wearing a dress seems pointless, and the bikini doesn't provide protection.
Or are we dancers?
I decided that as a deliberate inversion of Lyra's typical fandom portrayal, she despises apes, and by extension Humans.
granted, I've already gone against typical portrayal by making her heterosexual, but whatever.

I don't see why this would be a bad thing, given that she doesn't really have a canon personality, just one that's accepted by the fandom en masse.
It's kinda like how I have Time Turner be more of the kooky inventor of Ponyville rather than being the Doctor in pony form.

Some people have accepted human obsessed lesbian Lyra as "Canon", and get mad if you imply otherwise.
Personally, I don't like that portrayal.

Like earlier mentioned, My Lovely Horse is the Counterpart to My Little Pony, with the entire cast as a deliberate nod.
This does not stop Star vs the Forces of Evil from existing, though.
And apparently air on the same channel as MLH.
Of course the IDW comics had My TIny Gecko as the MLP's version of MLP.
Alika is a hawaiian name meaning "Protector".
Princess Aurora: Pony of Power is more of a counterpart to She-Ra than Star.
