Princess Luna is beset by the evils that haunt her soul. Her older sister, Princess Celestia, believes that only true love is able to conquer her dark ways and return her to her former self. Yet Luna, discontented with the premise of Celestia's proposal, decides that any noble suitor must answer three riddles in order to test their bravery, cunning and dedication to her.

The challenge is for anypony to accept. But should they fail, they risk permanent exile and shame. A punishment evident of Luna's darker side.

As pony after pony tries and fails, a single earth pony, taken by Princess Luna's beauty, is determined to prove himself worthy of her.

Based off Puccini's Turandot, The Cold Heart of the Moon is a crossover story encompassing the love, tragedy and sacrifice of the original opera. The chapter name is a ponified translation of the opera's most famous aria, Nessun Dorma!

And when true love calls, the darkness in the soul rises to chase it away.

For what is properly a fantasy story, this is scarifyingly realistic.

heavy stuff dude and i liked it, you did a very good job, something I would write if i wasn't too lazy though...lol. :)

Thank you guys so much for commenting and liking it. I have to say that when basing this story off the opera i had believed that Nopony but Luna would have been able to take such a part and fit into so well... I've never really been one for happy endings, but I'm glad that the you guys enjoyed it none the less

This was beautifully written and had me kind of half-crying because of how gorgeous it was.

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Basing something off a story so close to your heart is a gamble... But I'm glad it came across as well as I had hoped

a lowly earth pony

My Little Pony: Friendship is Classist

Oh... oh my. Poor, dear Luna, poor, dead Apricot.

Any chances for a sequel? It would be really cool to see what happens to Luna and the unnamed pony.

The Idea behind the story was my own spin on how Luna had been twisted into Nightmare Moon. The story was set years before her 1000 year imprisonment. So for all intents and purposes, the unnamed pony is most likely dead and gone. Luna was saved not by love, but by the Elements of Harmony as she was in season 1.

Furthermore, although the story is based off the Opera, Turandot, much of what I wrote I had to add my own creative ideas into. I wrote this mainly because of my love for the opera and also because of how well Luna's story fits the character of the lead soprano.

This is pretty much where the story begins and ends.

........................................whoa. Just..........................whoa.

I do so hope that was a good "whoa" :)

5525597 I kind of figured that, the voice sounded exactly like an entity belonging to the Nightmare Forces. Quite a tragedy indeed, I would not be lying if I said that this is one of the best stories I've read in a long while.

I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. I must say that, although I merely hinted at it more than confirmed it. The idea behind this story was a look at the subtle deterioration of Luna's mind as she transformed into Nightmare Moon. As such, my own interpretation of the events that preceded that.

5529971 Quite subtle it was, they saw her as the perfect puppet and host for their plans.

I think I will have to check out the opera, Turandot, now. The story has sparked my interest, even though I've never been much of an opera man, before.

It is indeed one of my favorites. Puccini was a Maestro story writer, perhaps the source of most of my inspiration. If you can get past the Italian libretto I'm sure you'll find the story to be as moving as it is beautiful.

Nice little one shot, but there are quite a few grammatical mistakes on there. Below was misspelled as bellow a few times
