Hey Schorl, how did it feel when the show took your character, flipped her ideology on it's head, and then showed her for a fraud and monster?

Cause reading this stuff, this cultish pitchand the total transformation of personalities(or at least the attempt) is just the same as Starlight Glimmer.

And I hate villains who monologue about people hiding their true selves. You ask me, someone chooses to behave a certain way, that conscious choice is a lot more real than some repressed desire they may actually despise if they ever acted on it

I find the comparison between Schorl and Starlight to be a bit odd. While they are/were both the leaders of something that resembles a cult of sort, Starlight believes that all ponies should be, in all forms, equal. Schorl, however, thinks that ponies should be divided into castes where those with submissive personalities serve those with dominant personalities. It's not really the same thing ^_^;. I would also say that Starlight might have been a little better at it too, since she was able to hide out in the open, without being noticed for god knows how long, and converted ponies without the use of brainwashing magic (her spell only limited a pony's abilities, it didn't make ponies want to be part of the cult in and of itself, or at least that is my interpretation).

While I do like a good monologue, I will agree that one's "true self" is probably not what base instinct or desire dictates. However, I would also say that most people are not publicly honest with how they would like to be seen based on social standards. I won't go into a speech about it, but we see people deny their true feeling for the sake of being accepted all the time, and for some people that might be a good thing. I mean, if I pursued my "true feelings" I would have been killed a long time ago, or have about a couple thousand corpses buried under my basement by now.

The idea though, in the case of the society's "recruitment policy", is that there are plenty of things people hide about themselves that really isn't that big a deal. If you want to be a cross dresser, that's ok. If you want to serve someone as a submissive or dominate another person to your will, that's great. If you want to give shows of sexual exhibitionism in from of a controlled crowd, well you'll be applauded for it. The security of not being judged is a powerful motivator when it comes to joining a group (which to get back to Starlight, was part of the reason her cult worked so well. With everyone equal, there was nothing to be judgemental about). Acceptance of people's personal flaws, quirks and fetishes, it is one the easiest ways to get someone on your side and eating out of your hand... sometimes literally.

7475879 except she flat out says in this chapter that everyone has submissive qualities, which pretty much shows Blank as right that's she's manipulating things to her own ends.

Schorl and Starlight are both basically setting themselves up as all powerful rulers dictating everyone's place in society (you're a dom, you're a sub)(Listen to ME, everyone is equla), while stating they're just allowing ponies to be true to themselves, And if the ponies they target have no interest in them, well then they're the enemy and their minds and opinions have no value and will be shaped to suit the new order

Glad to see you return to this! I had honestly almost forgotten about this until my library notified me of 'unread chapters'. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store.

If Slate doesn't get Tolomare in this story, maybe you could add a bonus AU chapter where he does.
