In the case you picked Shanoa she cannot absorb monster souls only Soma can

Okay, let me try and re explain it, because my original explanation was sucky.
What Octavia actually does is when an enemy is destroyed, they leave behind their soul for a few seconds. What Octavia can do is sense those souls, and pull them into her body. She then can swap out her soul with another soul, taking the talent and skills that soul has.
So, basically she changes out her soul that allows her to play her Cello, and replaces it temporarily with something different.
