Dang, that was good! The best part of that was how in character everyone is. I could so see this being part of Shining and Cadence's courtship.
Only way it could have been funnier is if Twiley came in at just the wrong moment, leading to Shining getting extra credit on the exam for making a point about always being prepared for surprise attacks from unexpected quarters.

Here's the thing. We've only ever seen their relationship in two stages. Newly-weds in the show and the "awkward teen romance" that has been protrayed in the IDW comics, (as well as approximately 11.612 fanfics.)
I wanted to take a look at a different stage in their relationship as young adults. They've been dating for a while, they've had sex before, but they're not quite ready to get married yet. So they have this great outlook of being able to look back on their younger selves with a grin, but not worrying about the future too much, and thus they act natural around each other.
I have a feeling that Cadence had some effect on Battle Axe's opinion

Here's how I connect those dots. General Battle Axe always recognized Cadence's tactical brilliance, when she was his student, and lamented the fact that, as a princess, she would never be officially associated with the Academy.
But when he saw Shining Armor's test results, he knew immediately that she must have had a hand in preparing him for the exam, because he recognized her hand-writing (metaphorically, not literally of course). That's why he approved Shining's transfer and promotion without hesitation.

It wasn't meant to have a negative connotation here. It simply means that the room is rather plain, considering most of Canterlot puts a lot of emphasis on appearance. Certainly it would jump out at Cadence, who lives in a castle. But that doesn't mean it's ugly.

I'm more inclined towards that definition. There can be beauty in simplicity, and that's kinda how I always thought of Night Light and Twilight Velvet. Two basically ordinary parents who nonetheless raised two extra-ordinary children.

It's very obvious that this is before the Nightmare Moon thing at the premiere of Season 1, since Shining isn't a captain yet and Luna isn't mentioned once.

Yes, Twilight still studying and living in Canterlot is the indication here. This takes place pre Season 1, and thus before the return of Luna. The only other royalty we know is around at this time are Cadence and Blueblood, They both seem to have the same degree of relation to Celestia (niece/nephew respectively), but I assume Cadence, as an alicorn, would take precedence.
