Bluegrass Brooke

Gonna try this whole writing thing again.

E

Autumn had always been Trenderhoof's favorite traveling season. The sights, sounds, smells, and of course the festivals draw him through the many backroads of Equestria. One night while enjoying a small town festival, he crosses paths with Maud Pie. Trend dreads the worst when he agrees to explore the sights with her. But as time goes by, he learns more from the quiet mare than he ever thought possible.

[Note: This no longer takes place in my WCMC/TCARW/AHL universe as I've moved to TrenderDash instead.]

This is one of my belated birthday shorts as requested by scoots2. At first I was skeptical about TrenderMaud, but now I kind of like it. It was a blast to write. I hope you like it.

Beautiful cover art a commission by Marking. He's currently accepting commissions, so check him out on deviantart.

Editing by my overly qualified non-brony brother. Prereading by Asher-N-Hunt-Editin.

Good job! ☆☆☆☆☆♡ :pinkiehappy: I like it!

first FlutterBulk now this sweet! Glad I wasnt the only one who actually liked trenderhoof.

Brilliant work, like always. Well done.

I'm very glad to see this! The bit where Maud revealed her coat was lovely. It didn't come off as sexual at all, but appreciation of hidden beauty.

I'll take it, loved this very much!

5226016 Yeah. I thought it was a pity to have her always wearing the dress. She's very cute without it, and Trend's thing is appreciating the unappreciated, so I thought it fit. Trend's not a perv, so I'm glad it didn't come off as sexual. Working on this makes me want to write a lot more stories on these two. I've got some great ideas, but I can't start on them for a while. :raritydespair: I've got to finish WCMC before it drives me crazy.

Glad you all enjoyed it! Look forward to some more TrenderMaud from me in the future.

5228907 You got it, always good to test out shippings for romance stories. :raritywink:

This was nice:twilightsmile: I wasn't sure about the TrenderMaud shipping at first, but after reading this I'm starting to see how it would work. I don't think I've heard of this shipping before this. I enjoyed it though:derpytongue2: I assume that this is part of the WCMC universe, right? Anyways, I'm curious to see what else you'll do with this shipping if you continue.

5238311 Yup. All my stories pretty much go on in the same "universe" unless I state it in the description. Keeps me consistent and lets me slip in bits and pieces from different stories into a new one.

5238311 There is one other Trenderhoof/Maud shipfic on the site, but only one, and it's very different from Brooke's.

I have never thought of Trenderhoof and Maud pie shippings in MY LIFE.... And ya knw what? I have turned into another one of those who accept the ship and LIKE it.... :scootangel:

You r so awesome!:rainbowkiss:

A rather interesting pairing, an introvert and a extrovert. I rather like them as a couple. Couldn't help notice that this is the second Pie sister to invite a Stallion to the Nikerlite Festival, I'm referring to Limestone and Stalactite in A Dog Gone Crazy day. Thou that was called the Nikerlite Dance, it would be interesting if it was the same event and the third sister also got a date to go. What craziness would ensue when three Stallions try to impress an overprotective Igneous Rock at the same dance.
Just love these little Slice of Life stories, keep up the good work.

Unfortunately she overestimated the stallion's weight and he was sent to the grass with a thud.

That must be a problem for Maud. She always has to be careful how much strength she uses. She could literally rip a normal Pony apart without trying if she didn't. She's roughly as strong as the original 1930's concept of Superman, based on the evidence in her main episode.

Though, it was the first time that a stallion had not fled for the hills after seeing her strength.

Don't some stallions like strong mares? Even super-strong mares?

Of course, Trend liked Applejack, who is probably toward the upper bound of natural strength for a mare, so maybe he'll like Maud as well.

Do I look like a weightlifter to you?

To be fair, Maud -- you've twice displayed exceptional strength in front of Trend, so it's not an unreasonable supposition that you're an athlete in some strength-based sport. And you could, of course, be an awesome weightlifter. If you wanted to be, which you don't.

Maud was obviously a pony who enjoyed the simple things in life, quite like Applejack back in Ponyville.

Of course, geology can get pretty complex. My wife's a naturalist, and one of her favorite parts of her field is geology, so I know something of this. I bet geology gets even more complex on the Pony Earth than on ours.

To be fair to Trend on his lack of eye-mouth coordination, he's a Unicorn. He normally uses his telekinesis for fine manipulation.

"Fine." Humoring the stallion, she took a swig of the stuff. The taste was nothing like she imagined. It was spicy, and a little sour. She took another sip, and then another. It really was the best cider she ever had. Seeing Trend's expectant expression, she gave a slight nod of approval. "It's good."

That's serious praise, coming from Maud Pie. If she actually smiled a little as she said it, it would be uncontrollable enthusiasm.

"Well, in the grand scheme of things, their lives and this little festival don't mean a whole lot. But," A wide smile stretched across his face, "to them, these simple celebrations mean the world. It's hard for ponies who've never been out to these places to see just how special and unique these sort of events are."

He shrugged, "That's what I do. I take what most ponies would consider simple, mundane, or ordinary and make them into something extraordinary. Because," Trend took a long, deep breath, "because special moments like these . . . well, they deserve to be recognized, even if it's only for a little bit."

That's a beautiful statement of Trend's purpose in life. I formally and officially steal this fanon regarding Trenderhoof's self-concept for the Shadow Wars Story Verse. Trend has his own noble ideals, and if this is how he sees his mission, I can easily see why Rarity admired him. It's similar in some ways to her own.

I also like the idea of Trend having artistic skills. It's consistent with his known character.

"Yeah. But," The corners of her mouth raised ever so slightly, "it was nice. I like stories."

That's serious enthusiasm, bordering on giddiness, coming from her.

"But what you don't realize is that sometimes, despite your best efforts, there's going to be ponies who aren't going to see that rock as anything other than a rock." The pebble was ground into a fine dust between her hooves. "You might know that inside that ordinary rock is a beautiful gem. But sometimes it's just too difficult for ponies to look beyond the outside. It's not your fault, so don't dwell on it so much."

In Ask the Pie Sisters, from which I derive my version of Pinkie's two younger sisters, finding the beauty hidden in things is part of both Marble and Limestone Pie's talents, especially Marble's. If that's true in your universe as well, this might have not been the first time Maud made this point to somepony.

Maud took it, nodding approval. She made to walk away, but paused. Before reason caught up with her, she leaned forward and gave Trend a quick hug. Taking a step back, her stoic face broke into an honest to Celestia smile. Her voice sounded strangely high pitched and feminine, "I had a great time, Trend. Thanks."

Trend stared in dumbfound amazement as Maud simply walked away. What just happened?

You impressed Maud very highly. That was Maud practically gushing all over you. Physical display of affection and a smile. Careful -- you might wind up marrying her!

After all, even if nopony else saw it, Maud was no ordinary rock.

Perfect ending line.

I really liked your portrayal of the two main characters, and the slow, low-key way you built this up. While Trenderhoof gets carried away by enthusiasms, Maud is stolid -- it would have been totally out of character for her to display more attraction and excitement than she did -- and you made it obvious that this really meant something to her. Very well done.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who ships these two! I love the idea of him bringing some excitement into her life, and her helping to ground him.

Talk about a crack-ship. And yet, by the end, it makes a great deal of sense. Excellent work, as always.

Was looking for a nice cute story and that's exactly what I found. Love it.

This is a nice, low-key story. I like how it takes a while for Trenderhoof and Maud to warm up to each other, and it ends with the expectation that they'll see more of each other. Maud is very true to character. However, Trend seems a little too arrogant at the beginning. He's very self-assured in canon, yes, but that doesn't mean he thinks other ponies aren't good enough to hang around him. Note how at the end of "Simple Ways" he dances with Granny Smith. I don't think it's because he's into cougars. I think he was just showing courtesy and class. But, at least in your fanfic Trend does become more sympathetic toward the end.
