Beautifully written. Celestia's showing off exactly the sort of insight one would expect from a genuine immortal, and her passing of the torch to Twilight is wonderful. Excellent deployment of that last line as well.

Anyway I really liked the story. Loved the imagery and the ideas/sentiments here. (Sorry still not awake and my words are failing me....... Need more coffee). The idea of the immortals eventually leaving the world of their own accord or simply at the appointed time is great, and in ways it reminds my a lot of Tolkien's elves. Celestia's thoughts on immortality and the passing, but not leaving of friends is done very well and as others have said really fits in with her character cannon and so an immortal.

A you also capture the feel of the 'final ultimate lesson' from the master to the student.

This is definitely going in my favorites and onto my must read shelf. :pinkiehappy:

I won't try to pretend that this isn't an "immortality" story (it is, even if my personal headcanon makes a distinction between immortal and enduring), but that was definitely the thought that I was trying to get across, hopefully made apparent by the first line. I like the idea of the alicorns as sorts of curators, rather than creators: extremely long-lived, immensely powerful, but who serve a higher purpose, and whose duties must be passed on to others when their times eventually come.

Not all of that came through in the story, I'm sure, but that's the jist of where the idea came from.

This is definitely going in my favorites and onto my must read shelf.

the only thing i can say is i love and hate this story. i hate the loneliness that twilight will have to endure i hate immortality its a curse none should ever be forced to have. sure when you 1st get it you are like yay! i can do any thing and never die. but give it 100+ years and you will wish with all your heart that you could die with all your friends. more and more i wish that heaven and such does not exist reincarnation is ok but more and more i wish there to be nothing in the end and that my touch be left on all those i leave behind for better let that touch be my immortality.

My one regret in reading this is that it took me this long to get around to it.
