I really liked this. Sleet nor Hail was a great character. I loved his interactions with the CMC.

Great stuff!

Very sweet and Sleet nor Hail was great fun. Bravo.:pinkiehappy:

D'awwwww. That was pretty darn adorable.

Your characterization of sunset shimmer...makes her feel like she's actually a different person from the show sunset shimmer.

Nonetheless, this was quite good.

There's always a danger of that happening. Would it be possible for you to elaborate?

It's difficult to put into words, but Sunset seemed...oddly formal, given her tale, and she just seems to say everything...matter of factly, as if they happened to someone else

Very sweet. I can see what devas is getting at, Sunset seems very mellow about everything. Very much like she's just kinda packed up that part of her life and it doesn't matter anymore. To be fair, that fits with Sunset Shimmer to me. With her friends, she can talk about that stuff. She can accept that was a different person. So I really like it:twilightsmile:

I think I can see what you mean. To me, it's essentially what themaskedferret said. In Rainbow Rocks itself, Sunset Shimmer undergoes an impressive amount of character growth; she's a different person by the end than she was at the start. The Sunset Shimmer that has become part of the Rainbooms and now finally (mostly) feels like she belongs in her circle of friends is the one I was going for. That's indeed not the Sunset Shimmer we saw during most of Rainbow Rocks.

(Though I was going for at least a degree of insecurity on Sunset's part - what with "doom and gloom" and her occasionally going "I was the worst" as she's essentially coming clean about her past for the first time, and her breaking out in tears when she is shown at the end that yes, she does belong. I hope I managed to get that across somehow.)

Finally had the time to read these. This one especially is just beautiful - between the main tale itself and also the little bits of characterization for the other 5. The way you described how the elements of harmony do what they do also gets a big thumbs up. Very much looking forward to the third piece now, especially in light of the conversation on my dA page earlier. ;)

I love this one; particularly your explanation for the Elements Of Harmony.

Absolutely beautiful. Even after Rainbow Rocks, the two movies' and one comic book's worth of information we have on Sunset Shimmer still aren't quite enough to make it easy to get a good read on her, but you tie together everything we know about her to create a much-needed character study that solidly fleshes out her motivations and mindset from past to present. I love your explanation of how her talent for manipulation and two-facedness were born from a need to put on an act of playing nice because her classmates and teachers at Celestia's School were fed up with her, as Sunset puts it, "being such a little brat", and I have to add my voice to the previous commenters praising your description of how the Elements of Harmony's reformation works.

The joy Sunset finds in music is too adorable. I can't stop imagining her going home after doing the pony-ears-and-tail transformation thing for the first time, and just spending the whole night in her room playing music and singing at the top of her lungs and relishing having her ears and magic back.

You've very much succeeded in crafting a touching story. I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you very much!

I read through the thread you linked. It's absolutely true that writing Sunset Shimmer post-redemption is a lot about filling in the blank patches of her backstory, and figuring out how she got from where she used to be to where she is now. For me that is all about taking the things we do know and extrapolating the heck out of them. Music in our Hearts is a good example. I just took a surprising new fact - "Sunset knows how to play the guitar" and combined it with an existing one - "Sunset used to be with Flash" - and all the other bits of backstory collected since the first EqG. The Elements of Harmony bit was a bit of more or less long-held headcanon that I went into spontaneously. I think you kind of have to address them when writing about either Sunset or Luna as characters, in the end, because their encounter with the Elements had such a profound impact on their development. I'm really glad my theory works for others, too.

My only trouble is that I've been doing the make-a-backstory thing for a while. In writing the third of these stories about That Book from the Movie, I hit a bit of a snag. Rainbow Rocks adds a really lovely new angle to Celestia's and Sunset's situation with the letter-book, but mostly left that conflict in more or less the same state it was after EqG, so it's hard to find a way of handling it that doesn't to me feel like a retread of the story I already wrote dealing with the two, Atonement. Not impossible, and I like a lot of what I've got so far, but it's not quite there yet.

The courier was indeed a great character, and a fine pony.

And the description of CMC Highway Robbers was entirely plausible. I was kind of wondering who the fourth filly there was, but I had forgotten about Babs. Good job! :unsuresweetie::applecry::scootangel:

This was a great read. Pinkie was extremely amusing in her own way, but not too random or annoying; and Sunset... oh, you do such a good job with her.

Honestly makes me wonder if Sunset is missing a step in the equation. She hooked up with Flash BECAUSE she wanted to add his popularity points to her social currency. But it doesn't occur to her that while she MIGHT not have fallen "in love" with him, she still loved him as someone who for the time genuinely cared about her.

When can we expect the next chapter?

5516505

Expect? As in, a set date?

I can't offer one, unfortunately. If I can finish the third story in a way that feels right, I will. That might happen tomorrow or never. I need the right idea, and it hasn't come so far.

"Yay," Sleet nor Hail added.

Best pony.

"Why 'Sleet nor Hail'?" asked the filly that had introduced herself as Apple Bloom in the meantime.
"Rain and the gloom of night aren't worth mentioning, and I quite dislike snow."

Works for me.

"We can," said Rarity and Applejack in unison. Fluttershy stifled a snicker with her hand. Rainbow just rolled her eyes.
Pinkie Pie pondered. "Oh, like Rainbow Dash! She's kind of like that sometimes! But still a really good person, once you get to know her!"
"Thank you, Pinkie," said Rainbow in a deadpan tone devoid of thankfulness.
"You're welcome!"

HAH! Pinkie Pie is best human!

Rainbow got a gleam in her eyes and broke out into a dirty grin. Applejack bonked her on the head before she could say anything.

Killjoy.

"Did he play sweet, sweet music for you?" asked Rainbow Dash, earning another knock on the head, pinning it to the ground. "So worth it," she pressed through her teeth.

I love this kid!

"We're not thinking anything," said Rainbow, grinning.
"Nope."
"Nothing whatsoever."

Bull.

"What would we even be thinking about?" asked Pinkie, incredulous. "Him brushing up to you, his hands touching your hands to show you the right positions and grips? Or maybe how he's just behind you, your bodies touching, his head peeking over your shoulder, his breath tickling your neck, his voice entering your ears loud and clear even though you can't see from where, because he's just so agonizingly present, and somehow, even though he is so close, so intimately close, you're still supposed to listen, and even though his hands are so warm, so firm, yet still so gentle, you're supposed to concentrate on how they're holding the strings instead of all the other things he could do with them?" She looked at the others. "What? You keep staring at me."

Guess Pinkie Pie isn't as innocent as we thought.

Rarity's glare quickly broke down. "Pinkie, you don't happen to do any writing in your spare time? I'd love to have a look."
"Don't encourage her," grumbled Rainbow.
"You have your priorities, I'll have mine."

This exchange. Just yes.

"Man, actually saying it out loud is even worse than remembering it. I sound like a movie villain."

You enjoyed that.

"A bad movie villain," mumbled Rainbow Dash. She was thoroughly shushed. "Sue me for having an opinion," she muttered under her breath.

It's OK, you're right, at least THAT master plan is more feasible than trying to take over Equestria with an army of teenagers, even if you turned them all into demons like you, Equestria had 3 Princesses protecting it, 2 of which have been around for ages, a unicorn who could maintain a shield over an entire city for days that still held under the assault of an entire Changeling army for quite a while and Discord. She wouldn't have lasted long at all.

Pinkie made a thoughtful expression. "Yeah, I can live with that." she finally decided, smiling. "That makes a good story, too."

Definitely.

I thought Sunset was a great character from the start conceptually, just let down by the execution of her villainous role in the first movie itself. (I'm still waiting for the day her full potential is realized by having her encounter Celestia again. Third movie?) But I also think people who thought of her as simply a bad villain had good reasons for thinking that. So I had Rainbow Dash speak their side of the argument by hanging a lampshade in good fun. There's always room for differences of opinion in a circle of pony friends, after all.

Just generally, I enjoyed writing all those interactions a lot, and I glad you enjoyed them, too. Having friends to joke and laugh with is pretty great, isn't it?

Yeah, as a general rule, I love villains, for various reasons, they're funny, they're effective, they get all the cool stuff, but, Sunset, as a villain, was disappointing, seriously, she was like Twilight as a villain, the very CONCEPT is something that could be awesome, yet, her execution, was less than stellar. Pity, I suspect that if Equestria Girls was made NOW when the writers are a lot better than they were a movie and a season ago, she'd be a lot more effective. Mind you though, minus the whole unicorn backstory, if this were a typical normal high school scenario, she'd probably be a far more effective villain. Her problems are mainly that her plan wouldn't have worked. Remotely. And that the way she was portrayed, didn't work for the kind of show MLP is. I'm either ranting or rambling at this point. Sorry abou that. My point is, Sunset works so much better as a hero. Apparently, they're making an EQG TV show. Eh, if it's done well, it could be just as popular as MLP, plus, pre established fanbase, it'd be interesting to see how Sunset differs from Twilight as a hero, because if they're TOO similar, it's just a let down. Mind you though, I have no problem with her taking a page or 2 from Twi's book, but not the whole book. Sorry about that rant/ramble, I got WAY Off topic, my point is, Sunset works better as a hero than a villain.

YES!!!! FINALLY! For Heaven's sake, let those two have a reconcile already! It's transparent that Celly still cares about her!

Is it wrong this reminds me of my own fanfics that enter around this?

6235034 This isn't even the first of my fanfics about Celestia and Sunset Shimmer reconciling. It's just so overdue at this point!

I swear if the third movie doesn't have Sunset and Celestia in it I'm going to riot.

I'm really sorry it took this long. To absolutely no one's surprise, I haven't found the perfect version, because it doesn't exist.

Fanfic not PERFECT?! YAKS DESTROY! Just kidding.

Celestia squinted while she searched her mind. "'Failure is the wellspring of all learning?'"
