"I'll show them. I'll stay up all night and protect you. Nothing and nopony will stop me from keeping you safe."
Pinkie proceeded to diligently guard the cake all night, not allowing anypony near it. Later the next day, it took second place in the Canterlot dessert competition, with the distinction of being Princess Celestia's first choice for 'tastiest treat'.
Oh boy, the Wedding's up next...
And so once again, the
daycake is saved. Thanks to...PINKIE PIE.

We're expecting Twilight to kick Chrysalis' ass. Or Luna'll actually show up. But what we don't realize is that Shining Armor, even under mind control, has a shield spell so powerful that it refuses to break or be brought down!
(Or you know, Celestia won't throw the fight with Chrysalis this time and will in fact stomp her ass to dust like the angry goddess she is.)
WHY 2ND PLACE?!
5393682
She didn't throw it. Look at her facial expressions; she was visibly surprised Chrysalis was winning, then focused in effort, but it wasn't enough.
Besides, Chrysalis was powered up on love, and looking at Sombra, the Crystal Heart, and the Elements? Emotion based magic is serious stuff.
Really? You couldn't have had Fluttershy, Rainbow and Rarity straightaway admit to eating the cake?
5393899 I imagine that Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and Rarity are so overpowered that they would never betray their friend by eating her bosses' cake.
They know better than to eat other ponies' food.
KBO.

Look at their facial expressions. Chrysalis winced when she went up against Celestia. She expected to lose. As for why Celestia threw that fight - you're right, Chrysalis was charged up on emotional magic and she is essentially her race's alicorn, albeit normally considerably weaker given her reaction to Celestia taking her on. So, realistically speaking given that Celestia apparently and likely populated Tartarus with all its dark creatures herself (Cerberus is shown to belong to her), we can say that Celestia is DAMNED strong. Enough so, that I would assume she has to hold back constantly, as she did when facing Nightmare Moon.
Then, keeping these likelihoods in mind, Chrysalis is strong enough that Celestia can't hold back as much - but not even five feet away are the Mane 6, and beyond them is an entire hall full of innocent ponies. If YOU were an incredibly powerful creature having to cut loose on another powerful creature, but your loved ones were right nearby, what would YOU do? Take the fall so that the fight doesn't spill over and potentially kill your friends/family? Or just rip it all out and risk them dying?
Now, whatever you chose - then ask yourself, what would the former Bearer of Kindness (Celestia), do?
The first thing you'll think of to refute me is the same as anyone else who's tried before undoubtedly, which is "too many assumptions that's not what happened on screen", which is the common fallback. However, if we go that route, then it is literally 'just plot' and not because that's what logically (given canonical logic and feats) might have come to pass given what context we already have. Someone had to be the Worf to show that the villain was powerful, and thus make the inevitable bad-guy-buster look even more impressive. The only powerful character present was Celestia. Luna was, conspicuously, not present.
I think you will find my simulation derived from contextual clues and feats to be quite plausible. Moreso than "Celestia was simply overpowered easily". Couldn't have ruled the world's top nation for a thousand years on her own like that, bottom line. This isn't even factoring in Twilight fighting Tirek and what that means.
5394538 Your argument hinges around Celestia being strong enough to overpower Chrysalis if she really wanted to, but unable to release her full power lest she harm them. So... why would she have to completely cut loose? You're making it sound like she has two settings; Strong Unicorn and Nuclear Inferno, with absolutely no inbetween. If Celestia was strong enough to overpower Chrysalis, but her full power would have caused harm, then why wouldn't she have just used just a little more power?
5394557
You missed what I said about the fight spilling out and hurting the others. Using a little more power accomplishes exactly what giving up is trying to prevent. Turning it into a power struggle. A fight. What happens when a shot misses? What happens if Chrysalis gets smart and starts using ponies as living shields?
As I stated, given what we've seen and what we know, nevermind what we can infer, Chrysalis just doesn't measure up. We either accept that for whatever reason (I've presented the most likely, given proximity) that Celestia stopped fighting... or we spit in the face of context and reason and assume things that are far, far more unlikely. Like how that thousand years without Luna and the Elements, nothing bad ever happened that Celestia wasn't able to deal with by sending the rather ineffectual guardsponies after. We must also then assume that Sombra was defeated mostly by Luna (who would then paradoxically be the stronger sister despite being the younger and not having been the Bearer of Magic) , because surely Celestia losing to Chrysalis (who in turn lost so easily it's not even funny) must mean she was of no assistance against Sombra, who was a greater threat than Chrysalis based on his conquering of an entire race and plans to turn them into a slave army he was reasonably certain he could conquer all of Equestria with. We would then also have to assume that Twilight, fighting equally against Tirek who had the magical might of all four races of ponies across all of Equestria (and the Crystal Empire) as well as the power of DISCORD, generated the massive difference that Celestia's then-presumed relatively nonexistent abilities created by herself rather than the likely 60% or so of it. And that was no battlefield that Chrysalis could have stood on for more than a second.
5394591 There wasn't anyone in Chrysalis's immediate-immediate vicinity, Celestia had pretty good aim too. Even ignoring the faulty logic of 'If I push back enough to stop the invader I might hurt a few of my subjects in the area, so the better course of action is to let myself get knocked down so the invader can hurt ALL of them', there is no reason to believe that. Saying 'Well if Celestia fought back harder and may have hurt them' is saying Celestia has no control over the magic she's spent thousands of years having.
As for Twilight vs Tirek, what about it? The blasts were very large, sure, but Twilight was also quite new to alicorn magic. Ei; bad control. Size isn't always everything.
Problem solved, Celestia knows her cakes too.
So, onto the two-parter wedding and I hope Twilight doesn't get left abandoned by everypony.
5394619
... You continue to miss the points I'm making. I'm starting to believe you aren't trying to create the scenario for proper analysis.
As for Twilight and Tirek, yes - in this case it was about size. We can get something of a measure of how powerful Celestia is considering that Twilight was fighting with the magic of four alicorns - two runty newbies, Luna who is apparently not normally as strong as Celestia (wouldn't have needed the Nightmare entity's transformation into Nightmare Moon to stand a chance in combat if she was) and then Celestia. Matched up against the entire pony species' collective magic, as well as the raw magic of Discord. We can easily assume 60% of what Twilight was fighting with was Celestia's magic. While Twilight was under the effects of all current alicorn magic, her hair started becoming animated like Celestia and Luna's - something Cadence's does not do. If we assume that is some sort of indicator, then normal-Twilight and Cadence simply don't measure up to the Sisters. Meaning, as I stated, Celestia and Luna were the lion's share of alicorn magic that Twilight was holding onto, and even if we don't assume Luna's still not 100% after only a year or two of being sealed in the moon under a corruptive entity's control for a thousand years, we still have reason to believe she was not as powerful as her elder sister to begin with.
Which means Celestia wields power in equivalent to much of the entire pony species' plus Discord's magic. Do you really want to tell me Chrysalis stood a chance against power like that? From just some siphoned love-magic out of a mortal and not even Cadence herself? A mortal who, all three times we've seen him in any sort of action, has gotten his butt handed to him (easily mind-controlled, easily had his magic-sealed by Sombra's shade, easily dropped by Tirek). Only the second case would I consider him being Worfed. The first and third he was out-classed.
5394656
Funny. I feel the same way about you.
First of all, how do you know it was the entire species? I'm not going to say it was just those few towns we see being drained, but the Elements of Harmony hid away people from Tirek, so more likely it was 'Get me enough magic to go against the alicorns, then I take them'. And here's the thing; we don't know just how much raw power Discord actually has. It's chaos magic, who says the things he does needs a linear amount of power? Considering Tirek barely grew, to maybe 50-75% larger than before, after draining him? Seems likely.
No we can't. There's no evidence that Twilight and Cadance are 'runty newbies'. Cadance, possibly, but even then she managed to shield an entire empire for days on end with no sleep; we're never given an actual timeline for how long.
Wrong. Easy math for this: For Ethereal Mane, Alicorns must have 30+ magic. Twilight: 20, Cadance: 25, Luna: 30, Celestia: 35. Even ignoring that, remember Twilight's hair only went wavy TWICE: Once immediately after gaining the mgic, and again when she changed night to day, and NEVER again. It's much more likely the waviness is connected to the cosmic bodies, based on that, than actual power.
I've just shown how that's not the case.
Yes, considering that, again, emotion magic is serious business. We've seen that she can stand against power like that. And I know you're going to bring the argument of 'she got smacked by the love shield'. She'd let her guard down and was taken by surprise, so what?
Pinkie Pie's super delicious cupcakes won first prize of course. The Cakes were very gracious about it.
