Rinnaul

I do nothing of merit. On occasion, I give the impression of being creative, but this is a deception. I am merely derivative in clever ways.

On top of her universal magical talent, teleportation was Twilight's specialty. With her newfound Alicorn power, even vast distances would be within her reach. She was so certain that there was nowhere they would find themselves other than their destination, she even offered to teleport herself and Celestia all the way to the Crystal Empire, together.

Of course, nowhere is exactly where they find themselves.

For a week.

The character interaction was nice and their progression of time passing activities well paced. Glad to read this and I would definitely read that sequel (totally not based on the fact I may or not be a twilestia fan.)

What a sweet story. I'm a Twilestia shipper, so of course I loved it, but I really enjoyed the characterizations. They weren't too forward, or too formal, and you could feel the bond between Twilight and Celestia. Wonderful.

Finally, this might eventually get a sequel where Twilight develops a crush on Celestia

Pretty please? Pic related. You can't say no to that face.

5034003 I dunno. I can say no to that face (though I would hate myself for a while afterwards) but this face, I could never say no to:

fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/185/9/4/can_i_haz_it_please__by_fluttershy_wins-d7p7s61.gif

And just for the record, I really enjoyed this story, and it gives me a strange idea I may or may not use in the future for a planned Flutterlestia fic (or even a future idea I haven't had yet).

However, I'm personally not interested in seeing a Twilestia story spawn from it, simply because I'm personally not interested in Twilestia. No offense, and not saying you shouldn't write it, just stating my opinion.

Wow that ending snuck up on me. I was so sucked in it took me a moment to process the fact that they got out of the teleport. Fantastic job man.

So her specialty is... something she learned from watching NMM do it?

Wait I thought Oneshotober was in October...

5034621
The Oneshotober rules allow for people to start posting up to 10 days ahead (so Sept. 20), to account for schedules or events that might interrupt your month. I decided to start posting as early as I could because my work schedule was uncertain, but I might try for 41 straight days of stories, as well.

It's basically a question of how long a bunch of one-shots hold my interest or if I'll just want to go back to writing my ongoing adventure fic.

Ha! :pinkiehappy:

That was a fun read.

Would they arrive in some sort of horribly unrecognizable form like giant disembodied heads or something?

:rainbowlaugh: Face of Boe reference?

“—on stage in a skirt and fishnet leggings. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but now that I have wings of my own—”

This would make one heck of a plot device for a bigger story. It would be a hassle to introduce, though, and might not be as believable outside of a one-shot.

5035126 or Hanging Balloons

5036006 5035126
I was going for the Face of Boe. Kinda surprised it took so long for someone to comment on it.

5034431
You have to admit. She uses it constantly, we don't see any other unicorns use it (aside from the princesses), and at this point her fighting style is basically "teleport spam".

Well, that is entertaining.

5036022

There are few games in which you can do so... But if it is one... I like to mash.

Be warned, I may be only able to take one hit, but you will never make that hit...

5036022
It is highly versatile, no? Imagine a fight between Twilight and another upper level unicorn, like Star Swirl (simply for the irony). It would be super fast paced, as both would be reappearing and disappearing at random to try and throw off their competitor. That would be awesome to see.

5035126

Captain Jack, oh you.

5036182
That wouldn't be a good idea to teleport all the time, uses decent amount of magic.

5036394
Well, it's implied that since they are upper level, they not only have a larger magic well to tap into, they have more control over their magic overall. For a mid-level unicorn, teleportation would certainly take out quite a bit of energy. But also take into account she is an alicorn.

This story is brilliant. The idea behind it, the characterisation, the ending ... it's perfection. Good job.

Plus, Doctor Who reference*.

*(x2 if you think of the place they're trapped in as analogous to the Space/Time Vortex.)

5036022
That would more be like her favorite spell, yeah. I thought it was hilarious that she got lazier and lazier through the first season.

The various horror stories of ponies leaving body parts behind or vanishing altogether are usually inspired by some unicorn's drunken attempt, and then terribly exaggerated."

Possible Harry Potter reference? (Dissaparating):pinkiegasp:

5037020
I might have had Harry Potter in mind when I wrote that bit, but it wasn't an intentional reference so much as it's a common teleportation trope. It shows up everywhere from HP, to Dragonriders of Pern, to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I teleported home one night,
With Ron and Sid and Meg.
Ron stole Meggie's heart away,
And I got Sidney's leg.

5037102 Okay, still a cool sentence though:derpytongue2:

5036508
And? Still uses a decent amount, no unicorn would be able to last against her then...

"I gather you've made some progress in understanding our predicament, Twilight?"

Celestia idly wished for a cup of tea to sip nonchalantly as she responded. The effect was subtle, but did more to convey an air of wisdom and solemnity than any number of centuries as the lone ruler of the most peaceful and prosperous nation on the planet. Not that she needed to convince her faithful student of such things—Twilight very nearly worshipped the ground she walked on. But she felt somehow incomplete without it.

These lines right here. Brilliant.

Whether or not teleporting is a useful tactic in a fight depends on how it affects the magic user and whether their opponent can predict where they will reappear. If, as show canon suggests, it requires significant focus and is magically draining for the user, it's utility in a fight would be severely limited and the place where they reappear might be detectable if any measurable time occurs between them disappearing and reappearing. And that's not to mention the magical buildup in the new spot as their particles are reconstructed.

Concerning the story, I thought the concept was pretty funny and seems like it could be used as an interesting vehicle for more one-shot-esque conversations between Twilight and Celestia, maybe even with Luna and Cadence too. Luna herself might appreciate hearing a bit more about why the effect happens.

I would expect distance teleportation to either require a lot more magic+focus or exactly the same amount. It would depend on how it works. If it actually conveys you there at sublight/light speeds via actual space then it would require a lot of magic, but if it relies on quantum physics and somehow exchanges your position in space with other particles it might be near instantaneous and have a constant, unchanging cost in energy expenditure (I suppose you could simply cease to exist at one point and start existing at another too).

Finally, this might eventually get a sequel where Twilight develops a crush on Celestia.

This was nice. A very enjoyable way to spend a half-hour.:yay:

Twilestia Friendshipping is just as good as Twilestia romancey-shipping. I love both forms, and wouldn't mind a sequel at all. But regardless, thanks for the lovely little story.

Not everything has to be romantic.

I'm okay with sticking with Friendshipping.

A great History and a great spell

Probably the most delightful little thing I've read for a while now. Spot-on characterization.

Also, I could totally see Twilight analyzing, perfecting and utilizing "slow-teleports" for when she needs some time to think.

"Twilight!" Fluttershy cried out in terror, "We need to save Ponyville in the next thirty seconds!"
"Be right back," Twilight says as she teleports ten feet to the left, "Okay, here's what we do. . ."
"But, where did you go?"
"Teleported around the planet, took me 4 years, 3 months, 28 days, 12 hours, and 14 seconds to do it, but I have enough energy saved up to do this thang!"

5040121
I think it's more like inception, which wouldn't compress time for body functions (not that dreams are actually faster than normal life time wise)

5040328
Eh, or she could use the time to figure out how to pinpoint the solution to the problem.
Either way, it's an OP problem solving tool.

5040368
Time travel/manipulation just about always is. I generally dislike it but some alt dimension tea time like this fic is aok

CCC

Very nice.

"Used to attempting to teleport and suddenly finding myself trapped in a blank white non-space?" Twilight replied,

Mysteriously, however... after wandering a while, they came upon a strange blue box and a broken castle facade...

"Oh for My sake!" Celestia fumed. "We ended up in another "Doctor Who" crossover?!"

:trollestia:

"—and then they'll think the week of night is a coup by Luna who's reverted to Nightmare Moon and the country will break out into a civil war and we'll come back to find everything in ruins and I've doomed Equestria again!"

"TWILIGHT!!" Celestia Canterlot-Voiced. "Calm down! Look at the story tags!"

Twilight, shaking in terror, gazed outward using her recently acquired Pinkie Powers for convenience's sake. Her features relaxed instantly, "Oh thank... You! There's no dark or tragedy tag! The world won't end in flames and ice and winter is not coming and neither are the dragons..."

She stared at the Author with a frown, "... right?"

:trollestia:

:trollestia:

5041039
You realize about half my stories have Dark or Tragedy tags, right? You're just begging me to come up with an alternate ending where Twilight was right about those fears.

5041094 Why else do you think I rather blatantly pointed that out?

Now you can make a grimdark fic which I can then brutally troll and gain MOAR POWER from the rage!

(Alondro is the True Devious Dark Master Conspirator and Emperor of the Zionist and Grey Alien Conspiracy Involving the RAND Corporation and Comcast. Yes, once more the T.D.D.M.C.E.Z.G.A.C.I.R.C.C. has reared its diabolical head! We never hear about them in the news because their acronym is too long to remember.)

5036549
Well, in "The Ticket Master" she teleports without even trying to (claiming she didn't even know that was going to happen when Spike asked to be warned first next time), so it does seem to just come innately to her. The only other spell we've really seen kick in by itself was Rarity's gem finding spell, which is indeed Rarity's special talent.

Former student-of-the-Princess Sunset Shimmer is the only other unicorn we've ever seen teleport though... So alternately there's evidence that it is just a spell taught to them.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but since I'm too lazy to read the comments,

Colt-Zukertrot was a winning system for fourteen years

Is that a real thing?
Also, I caught the Twilight crushing on Celestia, but it was when she kept blushing all the time >.>

5041245
Really that was a case of a magic flare taking an action for the flight or fight response. She wanted to get out of there, and her magic flared from tthe stressful event, and poof. will to action with a slipshod teleportation spell.
Also, Twilight is a hammer. Rarity is a rapier.

5041431
The actual real-world chess system is Colle-Zukertort. I referenced it because it's a widely successful system, and because it was really easy to ponify.

And no, you're the first to ask about that one.
