McPoodle

A cartoon dog in a cartoon world

For the past eight years, Apple Bloom has been doing anything and everything to earn her cutie mark, but she still doesn't have it, even after her fellow Cutie Mark Crusaders found theirs.

Having traveled everywhere in Equestria and beyond to find her mark, she's begun to wonder if she'll have to leave the planet entirely before she discovers her destiny.

It turns out that she's not far off from the mark in her guess...

The cover art is lightly adopted from a work by Biosonic 100.

This is a Doctor Who crossover, with the intent that even those readers with only a casual knowledge of the series will enjoy it. It takes place somewhere in Series 6 of Doctor Who, and several years after the end of Season Four in Friendship Is Magic.

There are three things to note in regard to the character tags on this story:

* It's a Doctor Who crossover, and yet there's no character tag for Doctor Hooves. Therefore, you can think of this as a "Doctor Lite" episode.

* It has "Centaur" in the title, and yet there's no Tirek tag. He's not in it, so don't get your hopes up.

* And finally, the "Other" tag is for this character: Green Dragon

The recap of the season seems wastefully expository. If I hadn't watched everything you mentioned, I wouldn't really care. It would have been much better to skip all of that and get into the meat of the chapter. As it is, this looks more like a mix between a prologue and a preface.

I've only seen a small handful of episodes of Doctor Who, but I'm still enjoying this so far.

“You left the TARDIS?” Rory asked as he rose to his feet. “That was dangerous! You could have gotten hurt.”

“You’re not family,”

What was that in response to?! It sounds like a non sequitur.

“Sounds prudent,” said Rory, smiling nervously.

Pussies. I don't see why even Amy wouldn't trust the Doctor. He's obviously safe and sound (relative to becoming proton dust) on the other side.

How about you refer to the scarecrows as timber dogs? Timber DD is not the best abbreviation, and it's somewhat Freudian.

“Some unicorn you are!” he taunted. A second later there was the audible smack, and Rory put a hoof to his reddening cheek. “Hey! Did you just hit me with your mind?”

“Oh, that’s how it works!” Amy exclaimed. “Thanks, Dear!” She looked back at the key and narrowed her eyes. A shimmery iridescence surrounded the key, and it slowly rose into the air.

Overcoming a serious hindrance through a gag is a bit of an ass-pull.

And all ponies can use "sticky" hooves, not just Earth ponies. Are you intentionally diverging from canon there?

Love it.

Amy and Rory are my favorite of the companions, it's nice to see them getting some love.

The whole scenario has a very strong Dr Who feel, I can't wait to see how our heroes resolve it.

Also, the story name is... badly thought out. Unless there's an actual centaur in the story later, and that seems unlikely, given Equis' arbitrary humanoid-disintegrating field. (Which seems to be there purely to make the pony Time Turner out as the Doctor, which is... just no.)

What feeling?

4971324

Rose Tyler all the way.

Rose Tyler all the way.

Fair enough. I love Amy and Rory's journey, but there are very few companions who I don't like on some level.

Rose was the perfect character to reintroduce the show to a new generation of fans. Billy Piper has a nice charm to her acting, and the major arc of her character was well done. But Bad Wolf simply does not have the resonance of the Girl who Waited.

I am so loving this!
It's like watching both a MLP and a Doctor Who episode!
:scootangel:

EVERYTHING IS PUNS! :pinkiecrazy:

Emperor Nofonny!! :pinkiegasp: We're not supposed to know anything about him!

Oh no, Colgate.
Colgate, what's uh going on here?

4976412

Well, it's a different continuity, isn't it? That Emperor Noffony I lived in a world where humans showed up early in Season 2 of FIM. While over here, there aren't going to be any humans.

Besides, considering Noffony's lineage, don't you think his biography is going to vary from one alternate universe to the next?

“Female worthless has cutie mark of a timepiece.”

Wait a second. Did Apple Bloom just get her cutie mark?
If this means what I think it means, then her cutie mark is that watch from the last chapter, which is apparently a chameleon arch, which could very well mean that she is actually a Time Lord. Eventually, they're probably going to realize this, and Apple Bloom will have to choose which life and memories she wants to have. Oh, and Colgate's probably a Time Lord too, but that shouldn't really surprise anyone.

On another note, if it was so easy for Apple Bloom and Colgate to get out of the cage, why is everypony else still trapped?

4984348

I won't answer the first question, because that will make you want to throw things at me. :pinkiehappy:

So I'll answer the last question instead--They have been busting through the back of that cage. I did mention that the Rani wasn't able to complete her introduction before now because she was constantly interrupted by escape attempts. Why do you think Applejack's legs are encased in concrete?

4984685
I did catch that, but still, if it's that easy to get out, I would hardly expect any of them to be staying in there at all. I guess they don't think they'd be able to get anywhere with the scarecrows around or something?

4984846

Well at first the escape attempts were amusing to the Rani.

Now she's using them to decide who to experiment on next.

After what happened to Big Mac, that kind of acts as a damper.

Apple Bloom reached back and tore free the chameleon arch that she had attached to her hip with clear packing tape.

HA! Clever girl.

But where did Roma-whatsit get all of those books from? Did she just teleport them there somehow? Does she know Pinkie's fourth wall-breaking magic? Does she have a TARDIS sitting right around the corner? Was it something wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey?

4989623

Oh good, somebody actually likes that gambit. I was sure someone was going to call me on that.

Anyway, the books are from that cart that Colgate dragged to Zecora's hut, as described at the beginning of Chapter 4.

4989676
Oh, right. That slipped my mind. So then how did the cart get to wherever they are now? Did the Timber DDs bring it along without telling Rani? And are we going to get an explanation of why Colgate thought to bring the books along?

Roma... got it from Zecora's treehouse. At the same time she got the gold dust.

And Colgate had trouble explaining her actions sometimes. It was almost like somebody else was directing her on an unconscious level... (Again, I hinted pretty strongly at this in Chapter 4.)

Give a smart dragon what it wants and it ceases to be smart.
That's pretty cool.

:rainbowlaugh:
Okay, it was freaking awesome!

You really can't describe battle scenes, right? :unsuresweetie:

But that's fine, a bit of cleverness solves everything! :pinkiehappy: Nice job Apple Bloom, nice job Romana!

4995130

Well yes, but I was also going for something deliberate here.

Doctor Who, and especially Doctor Hooves fanfiction, have a lot of action sequences in them. But it's the character bits that are far more interesting to me, so I deliberately snipped all action out of mine.

Well that was a fun little story you wrote.

It's a shame it wouldn't fit on FiMfiction, because I'd like to see what you would write for The Princess and Apple Bloom! Especially a story with an Historic setting.

:rainbowhuh: So how do Amy and Rory know Davros' "end of reality" speech? They weren't there when it happened.

5284512

The Doctor told them. I can see him putting on his best pouty Davros impersonation while he was telling it.

4971229

While you do have a point, it's not for your benefit.

It's for those that haven't watched much Doctor Who.

Like me for instance. The knowledge I've gleaned about the Whoverse is from those good ponies who put in useless exposition bits.

Or like to be reminded of things.

:facehoof:

I cannot believe that a pony pun could sneak up on me like this! However, it only occurred to me now that the Equestrian bit is only a coin because a real halter bit would look ludicrous.

Huh. I wasn't aware that there was an original The Stepford Wives. I say original because there's a remake that starred Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken.

Likewise if it were a cut-off piece of a spanish dollar. (The origin of the term "pieces of eight" and referring to a U.S. quarter as "two bits".)

I love that Amy can intuitively know her own mark. That's so her. She knows exactly who she is and wha t she wants out of life. And I'm guessing Rory knows his lifes purpose revolves around any in someway and doesn't fancy having that conversation. Nice work.
