In the minutes just before the dawn of the day he must go to war, a royal Equestrian soldier ponders his lot. Just because the day is not yet begun does not mean that all is at rest. Just because something is promised does not mean that it is easy. Just because something is chosen does not mean it is desired. Just because something is obvious does not mean it is simple.

Why does this have so many downvotes?

I'll read and review this when I'm not so damn sick. :pinkiesick:

It's on my list.

All I can say is, I'm glad I read this now instead of when it came out. You know why.

Very well-written. It shows the realities of going off to war in a raw, blunt manner I've never read before. The ending was a really good way to show the speaker's acceptance of his fate, whatever it may be.

It made me cry, to see the speaker struggle with these things. I wanted to hold him and make all the pain go away. I wish he didn't have to suffer like this.
