Well done.

Great story. Have a like and a fav.

Hap

It could use another pass for a few punctuation fixes and one or two misspellings, but I really enjoyed that. Thanks, silv, for pointing this out. I hope this one gets out there where more folks can see it.

Best way to put it is that, I'm hooked!

This must be a twilight sparkle in hiding. We need a sequel. FAST!

So it that mare Twilight or Luna??
Anyways i really enjoy the story :pinkiehappy:

4831220 Twilight or Luna? You tell me...

4834007 I really want to say Luna (yes i do see Twilight but....) when the Midnight was talking about Nightmare Moon. (At least how I show it)

I read this after reading your post on skirts' blog. Your experiences mirrored my own somewhat, and I was interested to see what kind of story would result from your particular "where has the magic gone" feelings.

I was pretty impressed with this. It's a good example of "modern sensibilities meets FiM logic". All that cutie mark and destiny stuff is great while it's all allegorical and stuff, but you start taking it literally and it can seem a bit uncomfortable. I was a little disappointed we didn't get to see Twi try to defend dreamwalking, but I'm not sure what she'd say to that.

This makes me curious what the other alicorns are doing, what they talk about when they meet up, and what they think of this new world that ponies have made for themselves. I suppose that's pretty far outside the scope of this tale, but you threw enough details into building this new world that it's something I can't help wondering about. The description of the city in the opening scene put me in mind of Blade Runner. Rain, hovercars, and thick pillars.

From an in-universe point of view, I know it's supposed to be an uplifting "the world will repeat and renew itself endlessly, and there's always new things to experience" sort of story, but I couldn't help finding it all incredibly sad. Especially with the ancients still hanging around, sharing tales of bygone generations. Was letting ponies war amongst themselves for so long worth weaning them off their benevolent rulers? How invested are they in the future of this world now?

Anyway, cool story. Thumbs up. I go. :coolphoto:

5943510 Heh, so my shameless whoring worked!

Not sure if it came across in the story, but it's kind of also how I felt about people judging Twilicorn too harshly when it first happened. They were applying all this absurd real world logic that didn't really factor into the story. I kind of touched on it when I said that Celestia couldn't see the future. It's a trap a lot of people fall into. If they blame Celestia for forcing Twilight to ascend, fine... but that's implying a whole set of other things. Like I said, if she had the power to see that, then it stands to reason she saw Luna's fall to Nightmare Moon. So what? She just let it happen and sent her sister to the moon? Sounds pretty malicious to me. That's not how I envision Celestia. Not at all.

This makes me curious what the other alicorns are doing, what they talk about when they meet up, and what they think of this new world that ponies have made for themselves.

Before completing it, I actually had a scene where Twi was watching Ember from atop a hill, and was joined by Celestia. She was covered in robes and in a wheel chair, indicating her age. But scrapped it because as you said, it's Ember's story and wasn't really relevant. But, I still play with the idea a bit. The sun coming out on a day when it was supposed to rain is basically saying that Celestia is watching. I did try and go for a more futuristic setting. Not quite Bladerunner levels, but I think it's cool that's the image you got. It's something similar, I think. So that's cool.

but I couldn't help finding it all incredibly sad. Especially with the ancients still hanging around, sharing tales of bygone generations. Was letting ponies war amongst themselves for so long worth weaning them off their benevolent rulers? How invested are they in the future of this world now?

That's because it is sad. Incredibly sad when you think about it, intentionally so. I smiled when I read this part of your post, because my pre-reader said the exact same thing. The world of Equestria that we know and love is categorically better than this one. It's not an improvement. It absolutely would have been better if the alicorns stayed, and Twi herself reveals she wondered if they made the right decision. I was going to include a part where she mentioned Cadance was dead set against it, her being the embodiment of love and all. But I cut it for length. It's entropy, the big reason why is because Alicorns don't live forever. Ponykind was dependent on them, and eventually there would be a time when they couldn't be there. It had to be done, but it would never again be the same.

All parents want to be there for their kids. They want to give them every opportunity and keep them safe from whatever harm they can, but they won't be around for ever.

Thanks for the comment. Feedback like this really is great. This story was emotional for me, because I was very aware of how melancholic it was. It was meant as a one shot, but depending on how I feel, I might make a sequel. Another one shot. We'll see.

“By the sound of things, it seems like when our society is compared to the one in ancient times, we've lost everything, but gained nothing.” Ember replied. “Our magic isn't as powerful as it was. The weather can’t be controlled anymore, and all the help and guidance alicorns could have given us is gone.”

It's called degeneration of body and soul.

Ember sighed, the ambiance of the this place was just what he needed. The orb flickered for a moment and caught his attention. He didn't see a power source for it. Nothing was attached and no wires ran away from it.

Midnight explained. “One of them personally served Princess Twilight. It was a great honor, and the stories were passed down in my family through the generations.”

ones that will make will make travel and trade that much easier.”

I got three possible ideas to who midnight is. She’s maybe a descendent of Starlight Glimmer or Twilight/Discord in disguise.
