Oh yeah, wtf was up with Glory dropping a crate on Sanguine in the last chapter? I'd thought that meant she'd come back early for some reason, but that never amounted to anything and was just confusing. Was it supposed to be her sister?

I like that the afterlife scenario we saw at the start of this book was more than just nice scenery. It's like, the entire backbone of this story's magic system, and that's pretty cool.

Kinda saw the end coming for Sanguine there. Once his family got out, they were vulnerable. I like that he went more or less feral at the end. Really should have Psycho to die with him, though. :V

Other than that, all I have to add is don't tease me with awesome things like P-21 in power armor, and who the heck is Crumpets again? <.< I thought that was the name of the one Ranger who like, got his dick raped off or something. Is that really so bad? But I guess I shouldn't be talking, since the same thing's kind of happened with me, and I didn't want it to. But as far as holding on to old grudges with Homage goes, I'll always have FoE. I find I can't easily say she's my least favorite character from it, though, especially not far and away. Her worst-ness is balanced by the much higher Velvet-per-page ratio, and it makes the comparison harder.
And yeah, that bit was something that took an element that I generally found distasteful and used it in a way that really worked. Probably in large part because Blackjack was a target that made it actually feel more like playing and less like abuse.

Blackjack seems not to have noticed she'd taken off, but she landed by them right after, where at the start of the conversation Sanguine had pulled her behind cover with him. I think Blackjack just jumped to a conclusion, probably based on that being who would normally do that with her regular crew and some wishful thinking.

I have real sympathy for you on the keeping characters straight issue. If you want some help, feel okay risking spoilers (I think they should be mostly hidden or in the K/"Role/Relationships" column and farther right), and don't mind using a cheat sheet rather than sticking to the story itself, this spreadsheet might do the trick for the basics. Probably wouldn't suffice at the level of detail this question got to, though. Anyway. Crumpets was one of the Steel Rangers who came with Stronghoof from Trottingham. Good memory on Turnip: he was a local who'd been captured and kept by the Flash Fillies. When they met, his assessment of the situation was that "[he was] fine here" before being told by his rescuers he was about to be thrown to the rest of the Flashers, then killed. He got out fine, and even put in a good word on BJ etc.'s behalf with the Rangers under Stronghoof during the Ranger/Reaper battle.

Her aim was literally to simply make war pointless by making both sides unable to die; both sides having mega-spell healing that nullified battles. She didn't account for the re-engineering of her mega spell to be used with offensive spells - essentially upgrading weapons from guns and bullets to nuclear arsenals.
