Two weeks into his work term, Southpaw discovers a mysterious colt in a mine shaft. An unlikely bond forms between the two, and Southpaw soon discovers that the pony just might be the friend he needs.

Interesting story, but I can't help but feel confused about Darius' (Flash Powder's) story. Or should I say the lack of it.
It took me some time to make my mind up about this one, but it came down on the "like" side of the ledger. What put it there was mostly the interesting "alien-ness" of the perspective. This colt is a kidnapped child doomed to a life of slavery. To us, his fate is horrifying. Yet Southpaw barely acknowledges this, yet still manages to be a generally sympathetic central character. The amount of unexplained stuff will divide audiences: I was disappointed that quite so much was left unresolved at the end. And the story could do with a proofread for minor typos. Worthwhile, though, certainly.
