Ever since Applejack ascended to a super saiyan, everyone has been impressed. Nobody was more impressed, however, than Apple Bloom. Determined to follow in her sister's footsteps, she trains in hopes of ascending into a super saiyan herself.
Unfortunately for her, not everything goes the way she wants.

In the original Dragonball, Kurillin was a valuable member of the team, second only to Goku in power and skill. It wasn't until Z that he suddenly turned into a comic relief character.

I refer you to the first World Martial Arts Tournament, where he fought Bacterium, and won by knocking him out by farting right in his face.
He was always a comedy character. Thing was, he was also effective at gaining sympathy, and also dying at key moments. He was a comedy character that mattered, basically, and the serious scenes that involved him usually affected another major character more. The only exception to that was his dealings with Android 18, and even that played more into Cell's perfection and the eventual battle between Cell and Goku/Gohan.
Krillin never stopped being a valuable member of the team, too. Even in the later stages of the show, he didn't fight much, but he took on the role of "mentor to the younger generation that could still hold his own up to a point." And at the end of the day, he was still the single strongest human on earth.

He was also quite good with his wits, he did help with the invisible man in the baba tournament, tricked chiatzu, and usually his loses are generally to opponents both strong and cunning, he even put up a good fight against goku in the semi-finals.

Krillin is probably one of the bravest Z warriors. Most of the time, he KNOWS he's going to lose, and probably die. Yet, he goes right in anyways. He even stands up against his friends, too. Saving Vegeta, or Saving Android 18, or saving Android 16, Krillin has proven himself time and again.
