When I was young, I wasn't happy. I wasn't free or rich, I didn't even have a family. My childhood was a desolate thing.
I struggled to survive in the oldest, biggest hive ever to be built outside the Changeling Kingdom. War and poverty plague my home as the Hive prepares for a conflict it could not possibly win. I learnt to survive here when I was merely a new born. Foraging from scraps and hiding from sight, always looking over my shoulder.
I don't have a name, but this is my story.

From what I gathered from A Canterlot Wedding, Changelings may feed on love, but they can also survive without it. Looking at the changeling anatomy, you can see a very effective predator, if the hard chitin shell, stealth tactics and fangs didn't give it away already. As implyed by Chrysallis, the changelings may have been starving before they got anywhere near Canterlot.
So, love is neccessary to live not much so to survive. Obviously, a changeling's going to be very weak without love compared to one with some.

Same reason how you could single out a word by attaching it to meaning, without actually understanding it, just by hearing it. Plus, he could tell what others want by the tone of their speech, their expression, body language and actions. If someone ran at me screaming after I vaporised his friend, I don't need to be a linguist to know he wants to kill me.
And no he didn't, he just can't feel it.
