Specter Von Baren

This story is great. But one thing that they all are forgetting is that it's eternal life, not life and youth. So basically they would all become really really REALLY old but never die. There goes Rainbow's fantasy.:rainbowderp:

(Starts crying uncontrollably) My first comment! My very first comment! Oh thank you so much! Is there anything in particular that you liked? Anything at all?

I'm a transhumanist, and we're generally pretty big fans of life, but thumbs down on death. I liked this story, as it covered most of the common arguments. Applejack's problem with immortality is a pretty severe one, but it is one that has a fairly simple solution (in our world where technology as opposed to magic is the most likely path to immortality, at least): make EVERYONE immortal. If you have the means to do it for one person, chances are those means can be replicated. For some reason this scenario is rarely explored in fiction; I suspect the large inferential distance. Anyhoo, just my two cents.

Ah, but the problem there is that if you make everyone immortal then wouldn't the world become overpopulated due to new people being born? Though I suppose births could be outlawed. But with fewer new people that means fewer new perspectives and ideas and... I'd better stop, I'll shoot the breeze all day if given the chance.

Thank you very much for your comment and I'm glad you liked the story, it means a real lot to me.

I don't think overpopulation would be an issue. It'd just raise the colonization of other planets on our priority list. If we started today, we could terraform Mars to be fit for human habitation within a hundred years with the CURRENT level of technology, never mind the incredible advances that would probably be necessary for immortality-related overpopulation to be a problem. Science is a wonderful thing. Sixty-odd years between self-powered flight and landing on the moon. Perhaps I'm naive, but I don't think there's anything we can't accomplish if we just keep reaching for the proverbial stars.

Heh, I could talk about this all day too. Still, to keep on topic and to give you some feedback regarding the actual story, I particularly liked your characterisation of Spike.

Ah, I just realized that it's rather interesting your reason for liking this story. I actually started it because I was kind of tired of seeing nothing but woe is me stories about characters that are immortal. I know that living while others you know die is part of the deal but at the same time I think people need to remember that there are silver linings involved with it, just like all things in life.

Holy shit, this is really long. I'l try and read it but damn why couldny you split it up into different chapters? IT MAKES ME ANGRYYY RGHH

20590 Well, I really liked Celestia's response, because everything is SO true in it. The writing technique of the overall story pleases Pinkie Pie.:pinkiecrazy:

20832 Woah chill there buddy. Two chapters would ruin the point. Well, at least to me.

20832
It just didn't feel like the kind of story that multiple chapters would work for to me.

20879
Aha. That's great to hear. I was actually worried that when I got to writing Celestia's letter that it wouldn't be satisfactory to people. And thank you very much for liking my technique.

Great story to tackle the idea of immortality. But Celestia is only able to provide about a few thousand years of experience to answer this question. The real problems come around after several hundred million years of life. Likely, you would be the last one around. At that point, the insanity should of kicked in full swing around that time. So, happy future Princess Crazylestia and Princess Loony! :pinkiecrazy: May your future dust empire provide some entertainment! Or at least a way to get off the god-forsaken planet when everyone is gone.

Are you so sure? It could be that Celestia, Luna and Discord are even older than that, we don't actually know just how old they could be.

Also, I like to think you'd go through the Paradox phase, first you'd go insane, then you'd get bored of that and go back to being sane, very very sane.

21069 I'm curious how you would go through that after being sane, bored, insane.

reading this was such a chore cause i keep remembering this: http://www.cracked.com/article_18708_5-reasons-immortality-would-be-worse-than-death.html :pinkiecrazy: but i loved the story nonetheless :pinkiehappy:

Why does this only have 13 comments? This is a great story! :rainbowhuh:

Anyways, I did like this story. The letter sent from Celestia really sounded like her, and everypony was very much in character. I liked the references to other things, too.

Keep making more good fics. Great job!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm really glad that people are liking the story, it's nice to know that though it didn't get accepted to EqD that people are still finding it and liking it.

Is there any particular joke you found funny or anything?

Amazing. I think I will start spreading leaflets with it.
Seriously, I liked the entire story, a lot. Simple (as much as it was possible speaking of immortality), interesting, well-written... I believe that as fas ar fanfiction goes, it is flawless, minor spelling/grammar/whatever-else-irrelevant-issues-can-be-there aside.
The story itself was great, but the moment AJ looked in Granny Smiths room was strong. I usually get this feelings only reading actual literature.
You are amazing!
P.S. It didnt get to EqD? Its a crime, to say the least. Away to start printing leaflets.

Wow! Well thank you very much for your kind words. I'm glad that you enjoyed it so much and that it was able to touch you in some way. Was there anything else that you liked? Any joke you found really funny or emotional scene that was especially poignant?

21095

That would be if you didn't have anything to do. Celestia's got a whole country to run, and probably has had tons of students.

Very intelligently and warmly written. Kudos to you- a nice bit of fic.

Thank you very much! I'm most happy to hear you describe it as warm because my main goal was to make a story that was most of all, heartwarming.

This has been in my favourites for a while now and I hadn't even read it until today, I just forgot about it. Anyway, I was looking through all my favourited stories and found this and I was all like... dayum! I was supposed to read that a while ago! I greatly enjoyed reading this and I think you are a great writer.:pinkiehappy:

411692 Thank you very much. It really warms my heart to hear such kind words from people. Was there anything in particular that you really liked?

Can't fav this hard enough.

This is the best fic I've ever read. It's funny, tragic, thought provoking and just beautiful. I love it so much!
Thank you for writing such a wonderful story!

Wow, I feel like I'm the first person to see this story in years. Dang.

This story feels so strange in light of some of the things that have happened since it was first published. I've gotta say, it was kind of novel to read an MLP fanfic about immortality from before Twilight became an alicorn.

I know you're probably never going to see this, but have a like. Wherever you are, I hope you'll be glad to know people are still appreciating your work after all these years.
