10 years ago, a Pegasus by the name of Max Million invented the game of Duel Monsters, known in certain circles as simply Yugioh. Soon after its creation, it took off faster than any known product before it, with ponies from all ages picking it up and playing the game. Twilight Sparkle, introverted disciple of princess Celestia, decides that she would not involve herself in the card game in order to advance herself in her studies.
However, on the week of the Summer Sun Celebration, Twilight Sparkle is not only given the tasks of overseeing the Celebration and making friends, but also to participate in the tournament that would take place in the morning of the raising of the sun. As time grows closer to the Celebration, she finds some startling evidence connecting the cards to events that took place over one-thousand years ago, although information is scarce.
What is the connection between these cards and history?

Okay, I'm calling BS. I've been witness to many times where a Dark World deck was steamrolled by someone who use Shadow Imprisoning Mirror.
4625257 Well, this world has a kind ban list that is more like guidelines that most follow (so running things like 3 grapha is frowned upon). Plus, depending on the tournament, it'll either just be one duel or one match. Plus, I had the best duel in my life against my friend who went all in with mermails and I was like "MIST WORM, BITCH" and he was all like "WHO THE HELL PLAYS THAT CARD?!" And I beat him by making quasar with mist worm. Not to count that one time I had the most epic duel of all time with hat 50 life point turnover in dragon ruler format... A person can simply play a better deck, but with some things being kind of restricted, I suppose its more viable in this scenario.
Alright, actually done with the fic now.
I've gotta say, I'm looking forward to seeing this continue. It's hard to write a Yugioh crossover that works(in fat I've only ever found one other), but you managed to do it.
As for character's...
Pinkie probably plays the Madolche archetype(the one where EVERYTHING IS DESSERT)
The Doctor would probably play something like Chronomaly.
Rarity has gotta be either Crystal Beasts or Gem Knights.
Fluttershy... Naturia? They seem cute enough for her.

I got a question, who you setting up as Twi's rival? Also, which (supposedly) OP Dragon Deck you gonna give them.
What made you decide to give Twi a Spellbook deck instead of a Dark Magician/Spellcaster deck? I figured that would have been better for her to start with (as it's stupid simple) and then move into Spellbooks when she got more experience.
Another note: What ban list are you basing this off of?
4655628 yeah, that was what I was going to do first, start with the dark magician archetype, but this fic is also meant to try to introduce players to the game of Yugioh, and if anyone wants to try and play it after I get started with this, might as well choose something that people might actually play, you know? I mean, dark magician can kick ass (Dark magic attack FTW) but this is as much fun for me to write as it is a intro to the actual card game. You know, what to look out for, what siding is, MST NEGATE!, Rulings, Stuff like that. Also, it fits her personality. Spellbooks are rather technical and you need to have a bit of strategy to play them properly.
Plus. SPELLBOOKS. IT'S GOT BOOKS IN ITS NAME.
NO ONE WILL PLAY RULERS. SCREW THAT DECK. Certain other decks... Well, let's say that an enemy may use a dragon deck. Let's see if you can figure it out.
On that other note, it's not really based on any ban list per say, the closest I can think of is a combination of the actual show combined with traditional format, where all cards are legal, but powerful cards are played at one. Like, although JD is currently at three, Celestia will only play one. You won't see anything like HAT or goat control, but things like empty jar and stall EXODIA may show up.
Plus, the ban list is basically a 'gentleman's agreement', if you will. No pony has to play a card at one, but nearly all do because of it.
Unless you're blueblood. Then you play [redacted] at three like a jackass.
As for rival... I was originally going to go for trixie, but [redacted] aren't exactly known for their consistency. As of right now, I don't really have anywhere i want to take this story. Well, I have a general outline, but the inbetween bits are kinda in the air.
I was just curious as the rival for the main character of the show always uses a Dragon based deck that usually centers around a 3000 attack Dragon.
Also, the low consistency is Dragunity and a few others at the moment.
Blueblood strikes me as the kind of jerk who would run triple blue eyes and/or red eyes darkness metal Dragon on top of every card that is banned in tourney play, like the envoy of the end.

Trust me when I saw that what trixie is playing can't even be considered Meta. Yeah, it's kinda powerful, but its so inconsistent... Give you a hint though, it revolves around chance, with the most important spell/trap revolving around giving you the correct outcome.
