If you close your eyes, it's like nothing's ever changed.

Canterlot, once a place of great events and amazing ponies, has turned into a rather dull place, when seen next small towns like Ponyville. The ponies of Canterlot do not much mind the new found peace in their lives, but there are still those who yearn for excitement. Whisper is one such mare. Her life in the guard is a dull one, lacking entirely in the promised excitement when she had first signed up. Events within the city quickly change that, though, and she soon finds herself bearing witness to a moment of great significance in not only her life, but that of the Princesses, and Equestria itself.

Pretty good, man. Pretty good.

I'm mystified as to why you included the Babelfish. If you'd removed the language barrier completely, it would have sped things along quite a bit, as you spend an awful lot of time explaining the fish and later the translation spell.

Because I think that it's absurd to think that two completely different creatures, from entirely different universes would have perfect symmetry for linguistic evolution. While I endorse pushing boundaries for literary plausibility, there is only so much I am willing to do. The Babel Fish offered a decent stepping stone between the two, while still addressing the different languages. And a part of this story, since it will see more chapters, is a more in depth exploration of magic, Equestria, and the whole set of lore behind the show. Thus, the explanation behind the translation spell.

I hope I explained that in a way that makes sense to you, and not just to me.

It's just an odd reference to bring in, is all. I mean, you could have done any number of things to maintain the barrier: Py's own spell, technology, a special talent for exo-linguistics, you name it. But grabbing something out of a series that, as far as I can tell, has nothing otherwise to do with this story, is a rather baffling narrative choice, from where I sit. :B I could of course be wrong about the pertinence, but it's hard to tell from just this.

I found the Babel Fish to be a rather clever way for Adams to solve the language problem in his set of novels, and I figured that I could adapt that. Seeing as how Py has been wandering reality for some time, now, it's not unreasonable to think that he might have come into possession of one of those fish.

He has some other items with him that will be inspired by other stories/movies/novels, and that's just one of the first ones. Despite his intense dislike for the situation, he's not so blind as to miss the fact that he's on the ultimate adventure. He collects a memento from each reality he visits so he can remember all the places he's been.

Nice story, want to see more of it

So, is this dead now?

No. I'm working on Fireflies for the time being.

Ah, wonderful; something of yours I haven't taken the time to read. I'm assuming it's really good, though.
