Choices

Twilight sparkle stood beside her mentor, confident in herself for what she was about to do.
She was about to ask Princess Celestia if they could make their first public appearance as a couple. And she knew Celestia would agree because why not? She had already declared her love to her, why not make it known to the kingdom what they were? Lots of ponies in Ponyville did it, and she figured things have changed since she left Canterlot if the Princess decided to allow her to court her.

Twilight smoothed her indigo mane out with a hoof. She had practiced this conversation in her mind approximately ten times in her own chambers before coming here to the throne room. She could do this. Twilight cleared her throat and confidently locked eyes with the tall, white alicorn.
"Princess," She started, using her best speaking voice.
"Just Celestia dear." Celestia corrected gently. Her eyes shone with love and care for her marefriend who cheerfully returned the smile. Twilight's confidence level boosted even more from this.
"Oh sorry, Celestia." Twilight rubbed her fore hooves together. She had to momentarily pause in order to recollect her speech in her mind that she memorized and found it. Ok, here we go.
"Celestia, I want to go with you to the Grand Galloping Gala as your date, if you would allow me." Twilight bowed her head respectfully.
She looked up at her beautiful mare friend expectingly, but Celestia had turned away from the purple alicorn.
Celestias face darkened and she did not meet Twilights gaze. Her flowing mane seemed to purposefully cover half of her face when Twilight tried to meet her eyes.
"Celestia, what's wrong?"
The princess stood looking out of the window of the castle corridor , at the sunset.
Twilight began to worry and backed away towards the door.
"I'm so sorry Celestia, I shouldn't have come and demanded of you so quickly, I'll just go now if you need time to think-"
"Twilight. Please come here." Celestia drew her mare friend close and kissed her softly on the lips, letting their faces meet so close together Twilight could barely breathe. She didnt understand what was happening. Was Celestia so happy that she was lost for words? That couldnt be right, she had been to the gala a thousand times! Going again wasnt that big of a deal to the eons old alicorn princess.

" I can't remember the last time I was asked to be someone's special some pony. I'm still getting used to it."
Celestia stroked Twilights mane with a careful hoof." I'm... I'm sorry to have ignored you."

Twilight wallowed in Celestia's sweet smelling coat, her beautiful eyes smiling down at her, but with a hint if sadness up hidden within them.
"So, will you go with me?" Something told Twilight that Celestia was trying to avoid the question on purpose.
Celestia buried her head in Twilights mane and sighed reluctantly." No, my dearest. I cannot."

"Well, why not, you have gone with someone before "

"As a formality, and it was with a colt. I cannot go in public with a mare. Not here in Canterlot, it's- it's not the way things are done,"
Celestias voice shook as if each word she said to Twilight pained her to utter.
Twilight slowly pulled away from Celestia. She was thoroughly confused.
" Celestia, you are giving me mixed feelings. You said you loved me, so why not tell the world?"
Celestia tried to hold Twilight again but Twilight backed away.

"Who cares what anyone else thinks, I'm your mare friend. Don't I matter more?"
Twilight began to tear up, and Celestia looked as if she were in pain, seeing her back away from her.
"Twilight, of course you do, you mean the world to me. But sometimes you have to make decisions for the greater good. For what the ponies out there want. In these times, I need to make the right choices, instead of the expedient ones." Celestia tried to use her best reasoning voice but could tell she already lost Twilight." The ponies here have made it clear that they do not approve of same sex relationships."

Twilight stamped her hoof on the floor, tears streaming down her face. Her heart was breaking at what Celestia was telling her.
All twilight was thinking about was two weeks ago when she had confessed her feelings towards the Princess. It had taken everything in her just to come out and say it. When the princess declared that she felt the same way about Twilight, she couldn't stop smiling for days. She was scared Celestia was breaking up with her, after realizing accepting her love was a mistake.
"Dearest, please, I'm not saying we cannot be together at all, I did agree to court you remember? But we need to stay secret."
Celestia took a step closer, with Twilight backing away again. Twilight glared at her love. The only pony she cared for with this kind of burning passion. The only one who could make her feel this way.
How could she say those things?
"I thought you were different, Celestia. Who cares what they think. You are the Princess you should be able to make whatever decisions you want."
Celestia rubbed her temple with her fore hoof, and said in an agitated voice, "Twilight, if they found out that their princesses were- were-"
"What, GAY?" Twilight kicked the floor again and yelled with all her little lungs could manage." No, your scared of what they will think, well you know what? Not that it matters to you, but do you know what i think?"
"Please, your opinion does matter to me, Twilight. I do care-"

" I think you are a coward! "

With that, a crying Twilight ran off , out of the castle and flew into the air. Leaving a sobbing alicorn princess with a broken relationship to mend.
" I was just trying to do the right thing..."

So, feel free to leave comments, favorite, thumbs up, or even thumbs down. I appreciate criticism as long as it is constructive
This is probably my favorite shipping, these two characters usually get along so well.
But I wanted to see what it would be like if they argued. Especially over something like this and I think that maybe twilight wouldn't really be that mad if she were going to have this conversation with celestia but I wanted to make it dramatic. So yeah, that's it. You can add this story to groups if you want as well. Have a nice day:)

Aahh, another Twilestia fic, always nice ^^

There are a few grammatical errors. I only noticed this once, but, it's a very common thing "Your" and "You're" There are differences, which I'm sure you're aware of ^^

Also, when you say "i love you" or something like that, you have to capitalize the I. Also a thing I noticed once.

There are not many other mistakes, so, all in all, nice fic ^^

Although, one thing I didn't get. It's Celestia and Twilight, it's not the ship I disapprove of, it's just that, shouldn't the ponies respect their princess no matter what and who she was into? She has the power to banish them all, and that should be enough to respect her in such cases. :)

Oh, yeah. One more thing I forgot to mention. When you're talking about something that belongs to someone, like it belongs to Twilight, you should write it, like "Twilight's feelings."

Always apostrophe "s" ^^

I'm going to be trampled by dislikes

4389039 oh yeah thanks for the advice and yeah I did think about that. But I wanted to try a little meaner twilight. I mean, she has been dating the princess for a couple of weeks and her heart just got broken so she was upset

4389093 A few minor points really.
When someone makes a statement enclosed with quotation marks ("), there should be no space around it, such as:
"I was just trying to do the right thing..." instead of " I was just trying to do the right thing..."
It makes it easier to read.
And the last part after "So, feel free..." should be moved down to the comments section as it's not really part of the story.
I liked the plot, though, so thumbs up there. Hope that somehow the two of them will work out their differences even though there is the 'Sad' tag on it.

4389222 oh thank you for the helpful pointers here :scootangel: it is much appreciated. Also, maybe there will be a sequel:ajsmug:

Not bad. Just some small mistakes with capital letters and some apostrophes, as well as the text format. There were parts I couldn`t notice a paragraph change, but other than that, it was a nice story, you could continue it.

4390023 thanks! I will think about it:)

4389079
why? I think Taylor Swift is a very cute girl that sings well enough

Celestia is being a dummy right now, she knows how fragile Twilight confidence is, she should know better than shatter it like that :fluttercry:

4391465 I know what is wrong with this author? My goodness! We should write hate mail

Really good so far can't wait for chapter 2! :yay::yay::yay:

4392040 oh idk if I'm making a chapter two. It was supposed to end there:rainbowderp: maybe though... Maybe

well that was rushed but still good.
this needs to continue.
and you do know there's a authors box right?

4392986 oh yes I forgot to use it. And um, it was supposed to be a short story for a prompt collab I was working on I have no idea if I'm making a sequel

Please put more spaces between the paragraphs. This is uncomfortable to read.

I think Twilight isn't looking at the big picture here. On an individual level, the opinions of others don't matter, and it's good to show that you aren't ashamed of who you are. On the national? Well, that very much depends on just what the level of anti-gay sentiments are in the world. If there are any particularly radical nations, this could cut cut into international relations; reduce exports/imports, heighten tariffs, and depending on the degree of the sentiment it could very well put Equestrians abroad in the nation in danger.

Being openly known as "the kingdom with the gay princesses" is going to have a negative effect on interactions with other nations even if they aren't as extreme as the above; ordinary prejudice comes into play. People attribute perceived properties of a nation or race onto every individual of that people or race--in this case, a lot of completely unrelated ponies will find themselves treated worse than they otherwise would have.

It ceases to be a matter of shame, pride, fear, embarrassment, or even personal feelings at all, but one of national interest. Celestia's already shown that she will do anything for the sake of Equestria.

Yes, famous people leaving the closet is an important part of striking down prejudice against homosexuality, but if this is at the earlier stages of erasing the prejudice then it is very dangerous--for Equestria's sake (but also their own)--to come out now. They aren't just famous, but in charge of the nation. Ponies acting against them will be acting against Equestria--and if they punish everypony, regardless of how deserved it may be, they'll develop a reputation as tyrants for striking down anypony who opposed their rule (that isn't what they did, but it's the way it'll be spun). Twilight Sparkle would probably take most of the flak for that--it would be her fault Celestia became so cruel, and she probably turned her gay too (everypony knows she's good at magic! She could totally curse the princess!)

Of course, if it's just the nobles that are stuck up about it or neighboring nations are fairly accepting of this, then yeah, Celestia's being a coward. Or her mind is stuck thinking two centuries back.

6115208 there is an easier to read version in the twilestia prompt collab chapter 160 same title

6115208 Tell those countries they're stupid and cut off relations with them.

7776396 That could be a quick way to start a war.
