Well--that was sad. I think you do have promise! Welcome to the ranks o' CheesePie writers. We are few, we are proud, and above all, we are mushy.
There are a few spots that need a bit of editing--nothing major. The paragraph beginning "Pinkie sucked in a breath": there needs to be a paragraph break when Celestia speaks, and then there needs to be a comma after "said.
The other thing is that I want to know a bit more about why Equestria is in a shooting war. (By "shooting war," I don't mean bullets--I just mean a long term war, other than the skirmishes they usually seem to have.) And don't misinterpret: I am a huge sucker for WWI romance, and you really caught the essence of that. It could just use a tiny bit of fleshing out. And that's just for later fics, down the road, which of course you are going to write.
