The closing ceremony that was held by Princess Cadence had ended, and Pinkie Pie's obligatory after-party party had all been wrapped up. All of the creatures, ponies, griffons, and such, involved in the games had headed off to rest for another day. Spike had volunteered to help clean the mess and fix the luggage of the Mane 6, thus staying behind. However, just as he was about to head off, he had been called for an impromptu meeting with the Princess of the Sun herself. He then receives news that frankly doesn't make sense to him, and now must prove himself to the leader his worth.
He must prove that he, in fact, can sing in tune.
If not, well...off to the Moon...

Ha! It's true though, I did have to mute it after the first few verses of the 'Cloudsdale Anthem', Cathy did such a great job of making it so heart-rendingly awkward. I still don't know what Spike made up for the rest of the song. Some things are better left to ignorance!

Exactly, that's why I made the rather sarcastic remark that even the CMC are better than Spike's mock singing.
I also understand that Spike himself can sing as good as the others (The Failure Song), but for this story, imagine if you messed up something that you were already good at, but a superior saw it. That was the angle I was approaching for this story.
