Life in the Crystal Empire has become fairly routine for Princess Cadence and Shining Armor. So, feeling a need for a little something special in their lives, the couple decide its time to have a foal of their very own.
These stories were written for fun. Many elements are exagerated takes on what it is like to be in the position to "Start a Family". The last story is simply a comedy situation of "Magical Backfire".

The story is "On Hiatus" as I wrote each section as I needed to just "Feel Creative". Times when I just need to, without care, see what I can do as a writer when I just let thoughts go with little, to no, editing. Just to write for the joy of writing.
So, amidst working on other projects, I'll be adding to this. Cadence and Shining Armor have become favorites of mine and I like relationships, how they work, and the fun and follies that go with them.

I'll add more as the inspiration comes to just get into a "Cadence and Shining Armor" mood. They are great characters and I'm glad you liked what I did with them in these simple, short stories.

What is truly causing "The Hiatus" is that I was chosen to run a panel at this year's BronyCon and I've been dedicating what free time I have to trying to get everything together for it. It's definitely a lot of hard work, but I'm eager to really make a panel that shows the true, positive power of pony. 
I honestly wish I could spend some more time writing on this series now.
Though, since things are starting to ease into place, I may be able to just kick back, relax, and see what I can do to keep this fun story going.

I literally wrote these stories with little, to no, editing at all. Heck, I didn't even really look a lot at what I was writing. I just sat down and let the story, quite literally, write itself.
I'm not surprised.
I'll go back and fix the typos at some point. However, for the moment, I have other projects I need to stay on top on. Though, rest assured, I'll do my best to get to them ASAP.
I honestly wasn't expecting a positive reaction to this series of shorts. Though, as I have gotten such a good response, I do believe I will try and continue it when I can. It was fun and, if I can keep that fun going in a way readers, like yourself, enjoy, then I'd be delighted to run it for as long as is feasible.

Golly. I can't say I've heard anyone say anything like that about my work in a very long time.
What's holding me back from doing more is largely the time I'm investing in assembling the panel my colleagues and I were given the green light to do at BronyCon this year. I have a deadline of June 8th for a majority of our information and I've been the coordinator arranging it since this past December.
Next week, I'll try to get some more chapters to post of this story. Deadline will be past and I'll have time to just have fun with Cadence and Shining Armor.

I took creative liberties with Cadence's mane. I figured she could make it flow if she wanted to. It was definitely intentional non-canon. :)

Not that I've noticed. You almost see fans for her as much as you see fans of Spike. :(
It's most unfortunate as Cadence is a character who has a lot of noteworthy back story to explore. For instance how did she come to be Twilight's foal sitter? Was she a princess when she foal sat Twilight? If so does that mean Celestia may have known since Twilight's birth that she was destined to be a princess?
So many questions regarding Cadence and all from her initial appearance in "A Canterlot Wedding". This makes one wonder if Shining Armor and Cadence got so close to each other due to how they both knew they had to look out for Twilight.
Cadence is also far more powerful than she may appear. Consider how her love was able to reignite Shining Armor to not only defeat Queen Chrysalis (Who Celestia failed to defeat) along with how long she was able to keep the magical barrier going around the Crystal Empire. Even after all her magic was used up she still managed to work with Shining Armor to save Spike, deliver the Crystal Heart, and get things started for the Cyrstal Ponies to vanquish King Sombra.
5283198 I agree. There's a lot of headcanons regarding Cadence herself, but my personal favorite is that she's a mortal alicorn. I remembered that alicorns have long lives, but can achieve immortality by binding themselves to a power greater than themselves. In this case, Shining Armor is linked to Cadence's longevity by way of their love. By doing so, Cadence is rendered mortal by her love for Shining Armor. On a side note, I couldn't think of a really good name for her humanized form.

That is an interesting thought on how an Alicorn can be mortal or immortal. I like the idea of Cadence opting to lose her immortality so she and Shining Armor can live happy lives together.
This now begs the question of what their foal(s) would be like? Could they be born Alicorns? If so would they be a sort of Demi Alicorn in that they could never attain immortality or the strength of their mother but still could use magic and fly?
Some ideas for a human Cadence could be Celest, Claire, Hannah, or Hope. :)

Even when Cadence is sleep deprived, exhausted, and drained of magic she does still manage to muster the necessary energy to make things happen with her body. Particularly her wings in the case of Spike and the Crystal Heart.

I agree. Though it seems the show is going to stick with Twilight as its primary princess with Celestia, Luna, and Cadence being more support than anything else.
It's interesting to point out how both Celestia and Spike are kind of being phased out. Celestia barely played a role at all in Season 4 while Spike was largely the comic relief while being largely left out. Cadence didn't really get a whole lot of show either with the exception of "Three's a Crowd". Even then it was disheartening to hear her say things at the Crystal Empire were boring. You'd think she'd at least have some adventures up there getting to know the place and its secrets. *Sigh*

And you're right. The Crystal Empire was the only time he was genuinely a part of the Mane 6's epic adventures. (Unless you count Equestria Girls)
I wonder if Spike would be treated better if he were to become Cadence's Assistant? The Crystal Ponies do see him in perhaps the brightest light. I'm sure he'd make a great helper to Cadence in her royal duties if ever further exploration in and around the Crystal Empire were to be done.
If I recall right the region around the Crystal Empire is largely a frozen wasteland. So Spike's fire breathing could come in real handy if Cadence and/or Shining Armor ever wanted to see what other secrets lie beyond the boundaries of their kingdom. :)

That's a good point. Though I don't see why Spike wouldn't help in the collection of gems from mines located outside of the empire. Perhaps that could be one of his first jobs is to help gather more crystal and jewels for construction projects. His payment would be to keep a fair share of jewels to support his diet. :)
Spike also can eat other foods. So he could do well at Cadence's side with carrot sandwiches or extra crispy hay fries. :)
Spike is very well behaved for a Baby Dragon. He definitely wouldn't (purposely) do anything bad that would jeopardize his beloved position as #1 Assistant to Princess Cadence. :)
