So, I finally came around to read your story.
And I like it very much. Pacing and spacing are well done, grammar and spelling are good.
And I like pegasi.
There's only one small flaw the first chapter: When she gets captured this happens a bit too fast.
For the future: At least do your *** *** *** that indicates a gap or let her be knocked unconscious. Being captured and tied up by bandits is nothing you should just skip. And Shadow wasn't just sitting there letting it happen, was she?
But apart from that, I liked the story very much. How is chapter two going?

I had the same problem. What format is the picture? JPGs are bigger than PNG ones. My first try to upload an cover art was 2Mb. So try and transform the format, it may help.

How exactly do you downsize an emailed image? Isn't it set to the size that the sender sent it as?

You open it using e.g. Paint, then there should be a button saying something like "adjust/change size". There you can change the size of the picture and save it as an PNG or something else.

Yeah, I'm not sure my artist is up for anymore work... That background took him... 3 months I believe and it was his first time drawing with ponies. But all in all, it turned out quite nicely!
