Funny but... why can't he just magic himself a chicken? Or maybe, steal from someone else.
It's good, but your writing for Discord is off, in my opinion. I mean, he only used his magic once in the whole story, and Discord, not loving the pure chaos kids can make?Never! But, besides its flaws, I would like to see more. :)

My idea is that snapping up food doesn't work right. It's like eating your own magic. You're not gaining anything and am in fact losing energy from making the food. It's the concept that you can't make something from nothing. He would either have to eat a real chicken or teleport one from somewhere but why do that when one is right there?
He does love kids and caring for them, it was that he hated shopping so much and wanted to get out as fast as he could. Haha, you can't do that with kids.
My idea also is that he's just going about a normal day in Ponyville. He doesn't need magic for everything. That would make no challenges and be rather boring. He's doing as the romans do. Ponies walk around, he walks around. They also get very antsy when he uses any magic to begin with. I'll be having him more 'himself' later then.

It's mostly eating animals after they die of age or natural causes, Tofu, or as Discord will find, griffins have a sort of 'black market' of fresh animals to eat. It's only considered black market as its kept a big secret from the ponies.
"Are you an alcoholic, Mr. Discord?"
I may or may not have died at that conversation.
