All legends begin somewhere, and in the musical world, they tend to begin at the Hoofington Institute for Musical Excellence. When a young, unwilling Vinyl Scratch is forced into its halls, she will discover far more than simply music among dark secrets. Because after all, great ponies are not born, but grown from the ashes of dying myths.

So it turns out one needs to press "Submit" before the story actually becomes available.

I'm super special because my brain does good. :derpytongue2:

Gak

Got school soon but I added to read later :D

Nice to see you finally putting your stuff on here!

Gak

A good beginning. Characters were all shown and basic traits too. Looking forward to more.

Oh no! the dreaded hiatus

This is actually pretty old, too. I just didn't know that it wasn't "submitted". :rainbowlaugh:

I promise this story isn't dead! If I let it die, Noble Cause would do the same to me. I'm just working on other projects, is all.

First up, reading this story was the lone bright spot on a painfully long, boring train journey I had today, so I have to thank you for that

Secondly, I feel this definitely deserves a lot more attention than it's gotten so far, especially considering White Box's success. There are so many things to love about it: big creepy building, engaging characters, vivid descriptions... the list goes on! And it's very nice to see somepony write about Vinyl's foalhood- I admit, I don't read a lot of fiction about this character, nevertheless it's something I've yet to see tackled. On top of that, your characterization of her is marvellous: she seems angsty and a little flawed (laughing at Professor Smooth Song and first greeting Octavia by being really snarky, albeit justifiably so), but she's also very relatable. In particular I love the line near the beginning, 'She was a Scratch, and she hated music.' Coming from a family where everypony other than myself seems to either play an instrument or has a real passion for music, I felt like I could really understand that sentiment.

I have to admit, though, it seems a little odd to me that they'd let in ponies who weren't entirely sure that they were interested in music. With Vinyl's parents, I can easily imagine they'd take her in without a moment's hesitation no matter what her attitude to music, but then there's ponies like Falsetto who don't know what they want to do yet (or at least that's the impression I got from, 'Vinyl smiled to herself. At least she wasn’t alone.' I really apologize if I've got the wrong end of the stick here :fluttershyouch:)? Considering how prestigious the school is and the the course lasts for two years, I would've thought there'd be an entrance exam or perhaps an interview process, like in the School for Gifted Unicorns... just something to make sure that the students were there either because of their talent or because they really wanted to be there. I dunno. Something like that.

... I make it out like it's a big problem, but to be honest, it was only after I'd read it that I even had the thought. It was a great start, and fan-fictions like this — where you can tell how much thought and effort have been put into them — are incredibly rare and ought to be treasured. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes, and I'm very curious to see why it was labelled 'grimdark' :pinkiehappy:

I have never squeed so hard in my life till I saw that both of your works are posted here. .

lol, gotta say that ireally didn't expect the fiddle. Good turn =3

i love your knack at creating such unique characters as this "prof. smooth song" and how vinyl is portrayed as a foal here. I have to agree with Lucky that i have kind of wondered about it.
all in all a great read, and i hope to see more wonderful works in the future =3

No, I wouldn't kill you... I know the feeling about other projects taking your time up. Besides, Air is going to be AMAZING.

I see Falsetto as having the same attitude and past as Vinyl: he didn't have a choice in coming here. And his talent...well, we'll just wait and see, won't we?
