Since when does this not make any sense? This story reeks of sense, good pacing, good dialogue, and simple truth. The author has described the journey of discovering one's sexuality very well. The characters actually sound and act like themselves and not like lust-crazed whores spun up simply for the purpose of existing in a clopfic. I don't care what anybody says; it was cute. I enjoyed it and would very much like to see a sequel.

I'd assume it something to do with her parents and how they raised her. I would guess that Granny Smith is actually fairly liberal about such things and she's doing a lot of the parenting for Appleboom rather than her sister passing on her own preconceptions. In which case Big Mac is probably hung up the same way as his sister,
Alternatively they have been raised the same it's just that Applebloom is just more outgoing than her sister possibly due to having less to do on the farm, she's more likely to pick things up from her friends and schoolmates.
Also was Rarity referring to Mac when she talked about her second time? That could be awkward to bring up in AJs presence.
