We are.
No longer were we individuals. We now stood united as one. One nation, standing together against a tyrant god who dared defile that position. One people, who had lost so much at the hooves of this cruel and uncaring god. One single unified being who still remembered the reign of Celestia.
We still remembered how it felt to feel safe. We remembered how it felt to have the gods on our side. We remembered how despite her power, she remained kind and benevolent, not crazed and maniacal. Those memories still burned deep within us, and although we knew that we may never get back those days now, it didn't mean we had to settle for anything less.
We were the masses, the many, the multitude. We were legion. A throng of thousands facing down a single god.
We gazed up at her, perhaps partly in terror but mostly in awe. Something about her was distinctly off however. It was as though somehow her very shape was capable of reaching into the depths of our minds and filling us with an unnatural dread. Her eyes were ablaze with arcane knowledge, and her wings were spread behind her, feathers now appearing as sharp as swords.
Beautiful, yet terrible.
She moved a hoof, and a wall of flames sprung up from the earth ahead of us. The heat was enough to singe the hair from those closest to it. There we froze.
We were one people frozen in fear. Or rather, we had been.
Now we were paralyzed no longer.
We had seen past false gods, and understood the truth.
We had rallied around our friends, living and dead, in singular dedication against our god.
We had forgiven our former enemies, and had perhaps found new friends in the process.
We had faced death and despair, yet had the courage to laugh and dance once more.
We had shared with one another, both in pain and in joy, and gave of ourselves that others would never suffer as we had.
And above all, we understood now that magic, in its most powerful, rawest form, was friendship.
Within us were Honesty, Loyalty, Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, and Magic itself. Without these, what did Twilight have? Her spells were impressive, and certainly showcased godly might, but what power could they hold? Harmony may be frail, but it was something beyond us. Beyond life, death, and god herself. Against Harmony, Twilight was powerless.
We stepped forth into the sea of flames, and we did not burn. We exited the other side of the wall of fire, and not a single hair on our heads had been scorched. Our hooves tramped over the embers, as though we walked on cobblestone pathways. Magic without friendship was nothing. Fires conjured from a twisted and ruthless mind were nothing to us now.
The usurper's face contorted into a scowl at this. She swept her hoof once more, and a sudden wave of unseen force shot forth from her. The earth and buildings ahead of us seemed to ripple from the shock, yet it passed us by without harm. We felt a breeze pass by us, and we continued unscathed. As her spell passed us by, a thin barrier could be seen around us. Those who saw it, however fleeting their glimpse, never forgot the sight. It was a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors, flashing from blue to red to green to pink to colors that Equinity had no words to describe. It was as though the visible spectrum had suddenly been shattered, unleashing new color from within it.
The glow of Twilight's eyes faded, and she glared down at us. Her look spoke volumes. This had suddenly become very, very personal to her. She stepped forward, pushing Discord and Luna to the side as she leaned over her balcony. Her horn suddenly ignited with blinding light, as she sent massive bolts of arcane lightning streaking through our ranks. The electricity arced around us, staggering our march for only a moment. As Twilight glared down at us, thousands of eyes glared right back at her.
By now the princess' eyes began to take on a look nopony had expected. Fear. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, something was withstanding her. In an instant she had teleported from the balcony, and now stood ahead of us in the street. She unleashed everything she could. Fire, wind, frost, stone, lightning, and spells that defied all logic battered against us, and yet we were unfazed. We stood as one against her, with Harmony as our sword and shield. Nothing she could conjure, no spell she could envision, no weapon she formed could stand against us.
We were many, yet one.
One mind.
One spirit.
One body.
One nation.
One people.
One army.
Twilight stood, still helplessly flinging spells against us, her body trembling as she did. She began to shout, to scream, to curse the very people whom she claimed to serve. She was no god. Perhaps she never had been.
We had seen gods once. We had gods who cared for us, nurtured us, allowed us to live in peace and in harmony.
Twilight had brought death, famine, and destruction to our door. She was powerful, but she was not our god.
We stood now only feet apart, a people staring down the god they had once adored. It was now we realized how small she was.
In an instant, that same glow that had once surrounded Twilight surrounded us. A veritable rainbow surrounded us. Not just six ponies, but thousands joined in Harmony. It felt warm and peaceful. In that multicolored illumination we stood shoulder to shoulder. Both those we loved, and those we had lost united. From a fallen Prince to the last goddess of Equestria. From the smallest filly to the lord of chaos himself. We were in that very moment, Harmony defined. Our colors rose into the heavens, filling the sky with a light brighter than any star, just before it fell to earth, covering Twilight in its glow.
She screamed.
At first she screamed in agony, her horn and wings disintegrating amid the flurry of colors. Slowly however, her scream began to change. It became one of sorrow. She wailed, tears streaking down her face as though a wellspring within her had been tapped. She fell, face down in the dirt, sobbing and blubbering like a filly. The light soon dissipated, leaving only a crying Twilight in its wake.
We stood and saw her now as she really was. Not a god, but a child. Her eyes opened, and she looked up at us through eyes thick with tears.
"What have I done?"
Her voice was scarcely above a whisper as she choked on her own words.
"I can see them. I hear them. I hear their voices. Calling out for me to stop... What have I done? Gods, what have I done?"
Are we going to get an epilogue to tie things up? Reagaurdless this was a good story, thank you for sharing it with us.
Now stab the bitch.
It would bring more of a feeling of closure to this.
Awesome tale you have told, I really enjoyed it, even if I had a few issues with it, but really they were nothing. Thank you for writing this, you've earned this,
well, i was sort of right on how this would end. i said that Harmony would bring her to her knees, but i was thinking that it would be her friends who would do it. somehow, she would be killed, and then the spirits of her friends, family, and everypony else she had killed would confront her in limbo, and force her to see what she had done, and then curse her to watch as the world she sought to conquer moved on and grew stronger without her, while all she could do was sit and watch, unable to look away or interact with them.
Remember the lesson of this story everybody: "Absolute power corrupts absolutely"
*slow clap*
Bravo, sir. Bravo.
You have managed to create one of the most epic stories I have read.
It starts off sad. Hopeless. And then, one by one, singular elements start to rise. But they are struck down, for they do not understand yet.
Hope Spots rise, only for them to be crushed. Gods fall before the Abomination. The grim, bleak future looms ahead.
And then, the people. They rise, and the Abomination meets the power of the masses. This story is a build-up to a revolution, and what a revolution it is!
Unlike what Earth has had, this one is bloodless. There are no weapons; there is friendship. The brilliant light of Harmony that the Abomination has lost.
The Abomination is gone. Twilight Sees.
I think I might have shed a tear.
Brilliant story. 5/5.
Great read mate.
Any chance of there being an epilogue?
Would be nice
Please?
well that was abrupt
Well this story was.. rather awkward. It really didn't add up overall i think. Largely because the story took far too many liberties to move forward. From twilight somehow overpowering beings who were collectively far beyond her, somehow having spells from nowhere that could overpower discord, and now, somehow, the magic of friendship makes a late reappearance through these random ponies.
Every story needs some amount of convenience for it to start. If a story relies on the plot being convenient from beginning to end, such as this story, then something has gone quite wrong.
Its honestly really disappointing. Normally i just outright avoid stories like this. Evil twilight is rarely something that is executed well. At first the story interested despite that. Now i am left with a story that takes too many shortcuts and is an evil twilight story.
Hum, it was interesting but I expected it end with Twilight destroying everything :)
Seeing as this is still marked incomplete, will we perhaps get and epilogue? Or is the incomplete marking a metaphor of some sort that I failed to pick up on?
With the ending of this chapter, I feel the story either needs some kind of an epilogue or another sequel to turn it into a trilogy.
It would make sense:
"The Monster We Made" was about Twilight's rise.
This story was basically about Twilight's fall.
The sequel to this story would be about the aftermath of hat happened in both stories.
Bravo good sir.

Honestly, this ending feels abrupt. Sure we see Twilight defeated, but with that build up. The sudden stop feels like that momentum ran the fic off a cliff [or into a brick wall]. An Epilogue, or something to not only wrap everything up, but give closure to the fic would be nice. I would say a trilogy [Rise, Destruction, After her stripping of power] would be nice. But honestly anything to tie up the loose strands, bring the story to a close, and bring the momentum of the story to a gradual stop. Would be good for this, if this is going to be the last story of the series.

Harmony doesn't kill though. Even against Discord at his worst, and the Omnicidal Maniac Nightmare Moon. It can banish, imprison, strip the very magic and power from god level beings. But it doesn't kill. Although I'm a little disappointed that the God Resurrection thing that some fics have for Tia / Pony Gods doesn't happen here, or at least an EoH version of that. You'd think with their hearts and memories recalling the Harmony and love of now dead Gods, it'd bring them back. Although there are plenty of pantheons were a God(dess) dies its for good. Still, yeah, she got hers in the end ... but it does feel slightly anti-climatic.
I mean we see a fic where she butchers her friends, and Celestia (counting Cadance as a friend). Then where she acquires Munchkin, Rape McGuffins pulled straight out of her stinky plot hole. Where she commits genocide, mass murder, powers that really make no sense that they exist in any point in time (which she uses to murder rape the populace. In Mary Sue-Munchkin like levels of rape).
Then after two fics of that. All we get is a crying Twilight. Cut Scene, Roll end credits. Feels to jarring for an end, and we really don't get the closure of Twilight getting Karma Punched with a razor wire Drilldo. [hint. Drilldo is a portmanteau of two words.]
Now that this story is done and given the title of this chapter, I'll be posting this.
Wait... It's done? You might want to change that Incomplete tag.
5987386 That's what I was just about to say myself, actually.
If the story is complete, and there will be no Epilogue, then you need to change the "Incomplete" tag to the "Complete" one.
This was a good duology , i only have one thing to ask, what is gonna be the fallout of her actions... as short sighted at that is of me to ask.
Nothing more of Trixie being the.......(what was it)....Harbinger of Harmony?
It does seem a bit abrupt.
5987248 well, it's not over yet. maybe Harmony will bring them all back as a big 'fuck you' towards her after all.
Edit: OH! what if the end of the story is they see a blinding light come from no where, and then they see a bunch of normal sized shadows, and two larger shadows step out from the light, and the last thing we here is 'My most unfaithful student; you have a lot to think about.' or something like that.
5987579 Perhaps this last author's note was a Kojima-style misdirection.
5988293 *strokes chin thoughtfully* Hmmm, that very well could be.
It's still marked as "Incomplete", so I guess we'll just have to wait and see, huh?
5988021
That would be a pretty funny 'f-u-Twilight' moment. But yeah, I'll admit that I'm sad Twilight's mortal. Since that means the EoH gave it to her easy. Since she won't have to suffer as long. Although with Age Magic being a thing, and potions capable of almost anything (probably mimicing an Age Spell isn't to far out there). She can be made to live to suffer for every year of life of everyone she's killed. Times Ten for every race she's Genocided.
But yeah, she got off real easy. All things considered.
5988354 Now I just want Kojima to write an arc for the show.
After having read this, all I can say is that, I hate you. This is such a colossal let down that I sincerely wish that I could go back and punch myself for even looking at this story. I get that this goes back to what the show is about, but honestly, and I could be wrong about this, I doubt anyone that got to this chapter was concerned about the source material. I was reading this because it was awesome to see Twilight completely dominate everything. I was looking forward to what might have been born from this story. I was hoping to see a spin off story of what this new Equestria would be like after Twilight reformed it. It held so much potential, and you just trashed all of that... So I repeat, I hate you.
5988815
You had comment #420, and this is how you use it? For shame.
5988449 Yeah, that would be kinda cool.
5988879 I definitely agree with you there, Corah.
What a jerk move on Fictional Critic's part.
truthfully i am dissapointed one would think an all mighty powerful god would bury them where they stood NOT throw a tantrum like a child i know i would *sees an "army" marching towards me opens a chasm right under neath them. i win*
5988879
You had this much potential and did this?!
5988879
I feel I need to elaborate/clarify on some things I've said. This is a great story and I really got invested in it. I am disappointed in how you chose to end this, but that is your decision as the author and I said more than I should have. I'm sorry for overreacting, and look forward to seeing what else you may write.
5989179
Well hey, I can't act like I haven't been disappointed in the endings of things before. (I'm still bitter over Legend of Korra.) But yeah, ultimately its up to me to end it. I had considered a super dark sad ending, but its just not really me. But hey, thanks for reading and thanks for being invested in it. Maybe the epilogue will change you mind, but you never know.
Either way, have fun, keep reading, stay frosty.
Lovecraftian story?! Heck yeah... satisfying ending to.
Good sir I enjoyed both series of this fantastic story you put up. Everyday I would wait for a new chapter to read, and now that it's finished i'll be able to read it again and again and AGAIN!!!!
5987276
Personally I prefer this version.
Personally... I find this ending very VERY underwhelming.
I love this story, really I do. There was so much build up, SO MUCH! And... no pay off.
They just walked through her attacks.
I'm surprised she didn't try physical attacks. Crush them with a building. Stab them with swords. I don't know, anything?
I just... am disappointed it ended with a deus ex machina and no payoff to what was an epic build up.
I still upvote this story, but the ending keeps it off my favorites list.
Oh my goodness! I stumbled upon this story due to the lovely people on TV Tropes, and I'm glad I read it! Your writing style is simply amazing, and poetic. I applaud you, good sir (or Madam. Which ever you prefer)
5994121
Funny, I could have sworn you were commenting on my stories before.
So amazing
As abrupt and kinda Deus-Ex-Machina-ish this ending this is, and despite the fact my stupidly edgy self just can't get to feel like it's satisfying, I must say it's completely fitting and actually amazing.
There might not be a lot of development for it, but the most important part of the series: it values, are clearly there. It has all the ideas of friendship, acceptance and working together that the amazing show that MLP is has told us since its beginnings and I think that's what truly matters.
Because as much as I would have loved a hopeless grimdark ending with Twilight actually coming out on top and taking control of the desolate land that Equestria had become, there is no need for that. It's not the point.
Having recently watched Season 9 finale was actually what made me rethink of this fic and write this comment, because it was so much alike to this one.
There was this same hopelessness that started emerging, the same overconfidence of the antagonist and, finally, the same climax, an ending of true light effortlessly triumphing against darkness because when we all come together nothing is impossible...
It truly is beautiful...

Its always interesting how time can change our perspectives on things. With the series having ended, its strange to look back on stories as old as this one, back when Season 3 and 4 were the new hotness and the idea of an ending was naught but a distant idea.
Thanks for going back and enjoying my story once again, friend. It still makes me smile to know people are still coming back to this story even all these years later.
