Well I don't know how you're surprised.
I knew she was awake. Since she forgot the candle and was not unconscious on top of a book I didn't believe it. The water glass could be reasoned away pretty easy, I mean I've taken pills and then had a glass of water in my room. If she really wanted to know if Twi was asleep she would have watched her through her window.

Suggestion for a sequel.
Twilight informs Rainbow that she'll be pulling an all night study session for Celestia one night. Rainbow realizes that means she won't be able to do her nightly visit, so she goes to sleep - using the sedative herself - in her own house. Twilight waits until Rainbow's asleep, then teleports into her bedroom and starts returning the favor...except she keeps going until Dash wakes up. At first Dash thinks it's a dream until Twilight mentions 'returning the past few weeks favors'. When Rainbow starts to freak out, Twilight kisses her. When Rainbow starts to try and make the scene mutual, Twilight holds her in her magic.
That was oddly very very sweet, and I really enjoyed it a lot.
