"In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

Who started this whole FOE thing again? No one ever seems to mention them? Sorry Sorry, I'll just be good and read this now...

We need more slavery-FoE clopfics. This is very good universe for clopfics! MOAR

Oh, Cross, you so crazy. Seems like she's got a serious thing for pain, though I wonder if that's just because its such an intense sensation. Also has a mind that doesn't shut off, or regulate itself, plus that eidetic memory, probably doesn't help her much with being sane. Never did buy the philosophical slaver's standpoint of relieving ponies of the burden of choice and giving them 'true freedom' or whatever; its all nice sounding until you realize that the guy spouting that bull isn't the one wearing an explosive collar. Wonder how long prior to Rolling Bones this is taking place? Hm, in any case, this looks like this'll be an interesting set of side stories.

There is a certain logic to it. What's more disturbing is how often people, myself included, choose it.

There was a final scene that featured a beaten and broken Hawker choosing slavery. I just couldn't seem to make it work, and it lacked the impact of the current last line.

Well, when given a choice between two possibilities, its basic instinct to choose whatever the path of least resistance is. For Hawker, what would be easier, continuing to try and fight when he's injured, bloodied, and beaten, with his brother dead... or just give in and accept the circumstances for what they are? From one perspective one could say that through acceptance of the situation one can find a sort of contentment, as no more challenges are left to face. On the other hand, contentment, or rather more accurately, numbness to ones circumstances, does not equate to happiness or fulfillment; things that cannot be achieved in life without fighting to overcome challenges. Its possible to argue that Cross is 'content' but not exactly 'happy' either. But then its stuff like this that makes these kind of stories and characters interesting.

Very true. Slight clarification, it would have been sometime later and it would have been Cross or Razor taking off his collar and offering him the choice. I wanted something along the lines of Orwell's 1984, but that's beyond my ability.

You do pretty good, regardless, and I can see how a scene like that might work, but also give you trouble. Fun short story nonetheless and I'm interested to see what else pops up here.

Not to rain on the story, but, palominos aren't brown and white. Pinto, paint, skewbald are the terms that apply to the pony that is being mentioned.
Palomino is a color scheme consisting of a gold coat and white mane and tail.

Other than that, AWESOME story! At least 10 RDs

Will Ember be appearing in this story, or has this story been cancelled, as well?
