The horses are just earth ponies who didn't stop moving and decided to stay in a place that would be apparently inhospitable to the ice spirits and continue a nomadic life to survive in the desert that most of Saddle Arabia is known for. Boom, problem solved. You're welcome. After all, they are friendly with Equestria, even though they technically fall under the pony body type, just longer legged.

Though I still wonder how in the desert ponies grew even bigger than ones on more lush landscapes. Rather than you know, more compact or something. Becoming larger means needing a lot more food and water after all... Been avoiding the talk about horses until the show explores Saddle Arabia a bit more, but without anything else to work off of, all we really have is the pun the name is based off of... Five seconds of two of their rulers making awed faces while standing next to Celestia don't really qualify them for real written work quite yet, or at least for this fic.
7473638 Well, they would historically be constantly on the move to the next oasis, and heavy armor would be more a hindrance than a help, plus every predator in the region following similar if not the same routes because in a desert water is more valuable than anything else... Yeah, they went light and tall rather than dense and short just to survive that little bit longer, and cloth armor to keep the cold of a desert night away.
Interesting idea of the origin of the zebra ponies.
I found myself going the other way with certain tribes of zebras being cursed by the star as they fell way back then and making those tribes infertile. Though the zebras back then couldn't fix the problem themselves, they found they could called on favors for all the spirits, they could overrule the curse.
Of course all those magics probably wouldn't give birth to a zebra most likely. So ponies were born and those tribes effected by the stars would die out and be superseded by the ponies. I kind of found myself thinking what would a spirit do if given flesh and blood and found myself thinking how in some cases are the magics used by ponies and spirits used by the zebras in Fallout Equestria really all that different from each other. Lot of thinking about that on my part. I often think of ponies as possibly spirits with flesh and blood bodies.
But it was definitely interesting to read your take on those events. It really has me wondering if Roggars might be editing it a bit. I wonder how Sombra fits into this story later on?
7473844 Lovely to hear other theories as well. It is interesting to think that the Zebras are cursed by the stars, though gotta wonder what caused the stars to curse them then eh? Just went with the path that made sense to me at least. Still a very interesting theory.
When hasn't history been editted? Typically the winner of a war edits history to make them seem righteous and the loser as a jerk. Even history books aren't that accurate because they tend to favor the nationality of the author writing them, and leave out a lot of details about the wrong doing of a country unless it was 'righted' by the country as well. Its a form of subtle manipulation that gets people more loyal to their country by not being completely aware of the daily atrocities any nation can commit. In a fallout scenario of war-time, we've even seen the Ministry of Morale was rather fond of this form of propaganda to dehumanize the enemy Zebras so that soldiers and civilians alike would see them as nothing but a monster to be vanquished. While on the other side Zebras were likely doing the same thing to dehumanize equestrians. its a typical wartime effort in order to keep civilians on the side of the government and to recruit new soldiers. A sad but very true part of history.
The next time you read into old wartime posters and see phrases like "Better Dead than Red!" or "Is this communism" paired with a bunch of people strangling each other, it was meant to be taken seriously rather than a joke. It was a legit recruiting tactic during the war.
As far as Roggar goes with this, he provides a third party view, having neither been directly involved nor particularly caring over this bit of history. Hes a bit spiteful about ponies but as far as stories gone, he is in this fic the person to be most blunt about the whole thing. Though we may be seeing more of his 'subtle manipulations' as time goes on.

Well I kind of think about what Homage said to Xenith when she was talking about the stars and her blaster.
I wouldn't imagine the zebras would know everything about the stars. Maybe it was the stars, maybe it wasn't. I'd imagine great many Amazing wonders and horrors live up there and I can't imagine it would always end well with something that possibly might view you like an ant.
My take on the flag was the same as any school history pagant where the current 50-star US flag is waved by the kids playing Revolutionary or Civil War roles. ...But this was a really good idea on explaining it as well.
