Actually they can because they are cold blooded. They don't use up energy to keep their body temperature from dropping and their metabolism is just slowing down with the temperature. Of course at some point they die but as long as it's not too cold, they can "hibernate" quite some time without the need for energy/food. It's a common practice to give reptiles a healthy hibernation in the fridge if you want them to breed and can't simulate the cold temperatures in the actual terrarium. Being a cold blooded arthropod-thingy, Chrysalis should actually know about that
