IT'S ALIVE!
This went dark really fast...
That was murder, not war. There's a difference between killing an enemy when he/she is fighting you and murdering them after they've given up. It doesn't matter that they were earth pony "purists". The whole point of allowing thee enemy to surrender is that they stop fighting you and they get to live through the war.
Words cannot describe the disgust I feel for the actions of this universe's Shining Armor.

But did Shining Armor actually give the order? Or is it a mystery 'till next chapter? Read it a second time, but more closely, and you'll see what I mean... ;)

I know he may not have given it, but by trying to hide the evidence afterwards by smashing the holo projector, and by not doing anything to stop it, and by using the executions to break the field marshal, it seems obvious that, even if he didn't give the order himself, he was fine watching other ponies be slaughtered just to get her to crack.
I still like the story overall, but that was just...
It's a fake. Where you have an A.I., almost anything can be faked on a holo-pad.
Is it possible that Shining was a Changeling? Or maybe the one who ordered her troops killed was a Changeling infiltrator looking to make the humans look bad?
I'm confused.
But also intrigued.
Now, I don't know how far the Gildedale and other groups were taking things, but the changelings are trying to wipe out the Equestrians, so the other groups probably are, too, and seems to have been implied in the city fight.
Weren't the Gildedale ponies trying to exterminate the non-Earth Ponies? If so, I fail to see the problem. Or why UNSC personnel would care about this.

If they were participating in genocide, they deserve to be executed. Killing civilians in war is sometimes necessary, such as bombing factories, disrupting economy through destroying commercial locations and shipping, administrative targets, etc. Specifically setting out to kill them as your goal is not war, it is murder.
There are also other things to consider with POWs. Such as whether or not you can feed and shelter them, whether or not it would slow your forces too much, etc. if keeping them alive is logistically unfeasible or would cost you soldiers’ lives, don’t take prisoners until it is a viable option.
