Rearranging Perspectives

Chapter 9: Dark Revelations

______________________________________________

When all was said and done, the first full scale battle hadn’t gone as bad as Sam had feared, but there was still an undercurrent of tension in the room. Fluttershy was just about to give her report on the casualties.

“After all ponies had been accounted for, the total number of wounded comes to three hundred forty six. Of those, fifty three were critically injured. Thankfully, there were no casualties and all injured are expected to make full recoveries at this time.”

All tension evaporated when Fluttershy said the words ‘no casualties’. They were even happier when they heard that all injured were going to be fine.

“Thank you Fluttershy,” Twilight said

“Oh, you’re welcome. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I should be getting back to my patients,” Fluttershy replied and left

“I think we should go check on the Sun Eater we captured,” Sam suggested and they all headed to the Sun Eater detention facility.

“Have you been able to get any information from the Sun Eater?” Twilight asked one of the guards

“Unfortunately not, General Sparkle, it’s being very tight lipped,” The guard replied and then showed the group to the cell the Sun Eater was being held in.

Have you come to try and get information from me? I assure you it is a futile endeavor,” The Sun Eater taunted

“You’re gonna tell us everything you know or else!” Rainbow Dash barked

And what are you going to do? You ponies are so soft it’s sickening,” The Sun Eater spat

“So you think you’re untouchable, do you? I think I’d like to put that to the test. Ve haf vays of making you talk” Sam remarked in a bad German accent, “If you all would be so kind as to give us some privacy?” The other generals turned to leave. However, at the door of the detention center, a scream pierced the air.

##########################

“Sun Eaters are separated into five ranks based on intelligence and power. Thus far, we’ve only gone up against fifth rank Sun Eaters, save for our friend in the detention cell, who is a fourth rank,” Sam explained to the gathered generals and princesses

“So we’ve only tasted a small amount of the enemy’s overall power? If this were true, why would they hold back? Would it not be a more sound strategy to stamp us out a soon as possible?” Luna asked

“That’s because the enemy can only transport so many troops at one time into this dimension. Lower ranking troops are easier to send across dimensional boarders. Thankfully, most of the enemy’s energy is tied up in keeping Discord in line and some sort of secret project. However, as time progresses, the enemy will be able to gather more energy and the dimensional boarders will slowly weaken with each attack,” Sam answered

“So what are we gonna do? We can’t just wait around for the next attack!” Rainbow Dash shouted

“Well, one thing we could do is find their points of entry and set traps for them. That way, any Sun Eaters that come through will be weakened and thus easier to defeat. It should buy us some time in the later stages, at least,” Twilight suggested

“Well, why don’t we take out the source? If we destroy the source of these critters, we won’t have ta’ worry ‘bout it,” Applejack remarked

“Right now, that’s not an option. We don’t know if we could even survive on the other side, never mind the possible hordes of Sun Eaters waiting for us there. It would be suicide,” Sam replied

Before the conversation could go any further, a guard entered.

“Princess Celestia, an emergency communiqué from Manehatten!” He announced

“What is it?” Celestia asked

“It says that Manehatten is under attack from an unknown entity. They are requesting back up,” The guard responded

“Thank you, Steel Resolve,” Celestia said and then turned to Sam, “Sam, I want you and your team to head out to Manehatten to investigate and if possible, put an end to the problem, but don’t hesitate to summon reinforcements.”

Sam acknowledged his orders and went to gather his team. Thirty minutes later, they were on a train bound for Manehatten.

“So, what do you think this ‘entity’ is?” An excitable pegasus stallion by the name of Quickdraw asked. His coat was white and his mane was black. His Cutie Mark was a six shooter.

“If we knew what it was, we wouldn’t be calling it an entity,” Iron Sides pointed out.

“There’s no use getting worked up over it. Speculation now would only serve to put us at a disadvantage,” Remarked the stern unicorn stallion Bronze Shield. His coat was a muddy brown and his mane was golden. His Cutie Mark was a bronze buckler shield and he specialized in defensive and support magics. This had earned him the nickname of ‘White Mage’ with Sam.

“Trixie agrees with Bronze. Worrying too much right now is a bad thing,” Trixie put her two bits in.

“Oh come on, you know I didn’t mean it like that,” Quickdraw protested

“That’s what it sounded like,” Chirped Wind Rider, a pegasus mare who had a sky blue coat and white mane and her Cutie Mark the depiction of a stiff wind. She had studied several martial arts and could give Rainbow Dash a run for her money as the fastest pegasus around.

“Why does everypony have to gang up on me?” Quickdraw whined

“Maybe because it’s you make yourself such an easy target?” Quipped an earth pony stallion by the name of Light Touch. His coat was sunflower yellow and his mane was magenta, his Cutie Mark was a feather on a scale.

“And how exactly am I supposed to fix that?” Quickdraw asked with an eye roll

“You could try thinking before you open your mouth,” Iron Sides suggested

“But we know that’ll never happen,” Wind Rider teased

“Oh come on!” Quickdraw moaned

“Alright you guys, leave Quickdraw alone. We’ve still got awhile before we get to Manehatten and I’d rather not spend it listening to you all bickering like foals,” Sam said

“Yes, sir,” The group chorused and went back to preparing themselves for whatever it was that awaited them in Manehatten.

When the train pulled into the station, all those on board immediately felt something was off. The normally bustling city was quiet as the depths of space. A chill settled upon Sam and his team the instant they disembarked from the train. It was the middle of summer.

“Well this isn’t creepy in the slightest,” Quickdraw snarked

“Trixie just had to read that zombie story last night,” Trixie groaned as they walked down a deserted road.

“It’s like everypony just suddenly disappeared all at once. Look over there, a bag of groceries just abandoned and there’s a half eaten sandwich,” Bronze Shield noted

“What could cause everypony in Manehatten to suddenly vanish?” Iron Sides wondered

“Chances are it’s the very thing we’ve been sent to investigate,” Sam remarked

“Wonderful,” Wind Rider drawled

Who dares to disturb us?” A voice suddenly hissed, seemingly coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.

“We’re here in response to an emergency communiqué. Who am I addressing?” Sam asked and suddenly a black mist appeared before them. If floated there for a moment before solidifying into a pony.

“Kneel before your future ruler, creature! I am Nightmare Moon!”
