Mother's day; a day we celebrate the ones who gave us life, who comforted us, cared for us, and loved us...but what is it like for the ones who lost theirs? What about the ponies who have lost their family? What does this special mean to them?

A little late, I was waiting for the preview pic.

Part of the Getting Back On Your Hooves universe and contains spoilers for the fic.

Thanks to ItsfromPeople and Alexwarlorn for helping with this! And Moonstruck-Badger for the preview pic!

I said it before and I'll say it again. With a Posey's personality being so close to her daughter's, how the heck did she ever the nerve to go out with a stallion, let alone managed to so much as LOOK at the DOOR to the maternity nest without fainting?

2788553 Perhaps one of her friends played matchmaker?

This story was so sweet.

And blindfolded her

I wouldn't label this as tragedy, but rather sad. This ends on a good note as tragedies tend to leave the characters vengeful and miserable.

Awww. That was really sweet.

I have often thought that the reason Applejack is probably the most emotionally strong of the Mane Six is that she's had some of the roughest times. Not that the others have had easy lives, (I happen to have a life rather similar to Pinkie's, so I know that isn't easy,) but losing someone you love is something which I have never experienced. As Lemony Snicket said, if you have felt it before, you know what it's like. and if you haven't, you cannot imagine it.
I kind of wish that they would cover this in the show. I mean, even Sesame Street covered the concept of losing someone. I'm sure it would mean a lot to all the people who have lost loved ones as well.

Well done. It's a bit ironic that Trixie is the one who comforts AJ the most. But it's not surprising, especially in the light of Trixie's Getting Back On Her Hooves.

Ummm, wasn't Trixie's mother mentioned in one of her flashbacks?

3067249I mean the one where Checker overhears their father saying he was proud of Trixie's medal, wasn't he talking to their mom?

3067604 No, that was a business partner.

Is it bad that I kind of expected her to go down with her mental health like this?
Still, nicely written

Don't be dirty. Lol.

let alone managed to so much as LOOK at the DOOR to the maternity nest without fainting?

I should note this isn't the ONLY possible fate of Checker, so if you don't like it, feel free to ignore it.

So this is a possibility not an actuality? Interesting.

I think tragedy is the most misused tag on the site. Just because someone is dead or is sad does not make it a tragedy just as a joke does not make a story a comedy. I bring this up because, atleast in my case, it can deter readers who may be ok with sad elements but not tragedy. If the entire story, including the original this is a sequal to, had been told from the perspective of checker, then it would earn the tragedy tag. But really, this is just a bitter sweet story so the sad tag is more than enough.

Well that was a nice story  My only concern/curiosity is how Fluttershy who had never been near to the ground before getting her cutie mark :unsuresweetie: has an earth pony mom, who really likes gardening. Even still, t'was spectacular, congrats on your most recent fav! :raritywink:

The old mare tenderly wiped the tears from the orange pony’s eyes. “Ah’m family, ain’t Ah?…Now come on inside, you’ll get pneumonia standin’ out here in the rain.

Had it....Not. Fun.:ajbemused:

THIS NIGHT BELONGS TO MY TEARS!

Jeez, I was riding an emotional roller coaster throughout this chapter, shedding many tears whenever Applejack kept getting sad and nostalgic about what she lost. And since her mom is the character I recongize and love, I felt more invested in the relationship and felt similar hurt for Applejack's pain of loss....................yeah.

What Trixie did to help, Applejack's epiphany, and the very last scene was very heart-warming and put a huge smile on my face. Two thumbs up for that.

...............jeez. This is probably the first time that I'm starting to show real pity for Checker, and dare say sympathy. Not only because of her state of mind, which is completely messed up by the way, but also because of something else I have in mind:

Many of the readers, including myself, were seeing Checker as a stereotypical Disney villain who had petty reasons to become evil. To target, oppress, enslave, and hurt a sibling for almost their whole life just out of jealousy and a superiority complex seemed too far fetch for me, and so I was waiting for a deeper reason................and I think I know what it is. Checker loved her mother so much, so when the parent died giving birth Trixie, I would imagine Checker was in deep pain, was in emotional and mental turmoil, and blamed her sister for the death of their mother.......................while there are other reasons for Checker's hatred and abuse towards Trixie, I believe the mother's death is the main foundation, in which everything else was built on it...............and created an insane monster. Jeez...................doesn't excuse what she did, but it helps me understand her more.

ANother well done story in one of my favorite verses. While we may have seen the mane six's mothers by now (With the exception of Applejack's though she will be showing up in a flashback episode. And it is only a flash back) these type of stories where they show up are truely fascinating to see. With the exception of Rainbow Dash, sadly. Pinkie's presence was also missed, but it was done in a way that way funny and believable.

The idea that Applejack travels around on mother's day speaks loads to her character. As someone who always sees her as a pillar to the others, it was telling that she was acting like one here. She was there to make sure that her friends were having a good time, a way to be someone to hold them up and keep them going while she had her own problems. At the same time, I love how they each acted like a pillar for her. Being there and supporting to her.

Speaking of wich, the moral was perfect. Yeah, techinically mothers are the ones who birthed you, but a real mother is the one who raises you, loves you, reads you stories, and tels you to keep going. The end where we see just how the two without mothers see their own is just freeaking brilliant, as it truely speaks to me.

Lastly, the story with Checker was awesome. Thanks Alex.

Well, three years on, here is the live read.

i kinda wonder what would happen if Trixie were to meet checker while she is like that
