Telaros

Mod 1 of 4 of The Diamond Cutters and general lover of reading. Genuinely enjoys and refers to Diamond Tiara as Best Filly.

E
Source

Diamond Tiara is introduced to the world of Po-Neigh-Oh! from a most unsuspecting pony. Silver Spoon!

What will Diamond think of all this? She never did quite get these sorts of games, it was beneath her after all, but to find out her BPFF (Best Pony Friend Forever) was actually into it? Well, it was a shock to the prissy pink filly to say the least.

[NOTE: A simple test fic and something for the gang at Diamond Cutters. Nothing serious.
A short and simple story about ponies playing games. This is supposed to be an example for a Prompt:
<"Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara play a game. Others may or may not be apart of their game."

So, Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara planning a game night? Or they out to be a little more creative with what and who they play with? From simple board games to a match with the very fate of reality hinging on a single move, it is up to YOU to decide what these fillies do or get into!>

If anyone is interested, feel free to partake in our Flash Friday Fic Event!

This is for the gang at Diamond Cutters. Love you guys and hope you all keep up the great work!

If anyone happens to enjoy this, then thanks in advance. I have no idea if I'll update again anytime soon, but at least I have something I can update if I come up with anything worth adding to it.

2624009 Sounds good. Yu-Gi-Oh! is always an addicting card game.

Oh I loved this! :raritystarry:

It reminds me of those days I'd just hang around and watch my friends play Yu-Gi-Oh!
Please continue; I'd like to see how the fillies react to "The Shadow Realm!" Most likely
a dangerous dueling place haha. I can imagine Princess Luna like Bakura except her
evil half is Nightmare Moon or something. For Pinkie it's Pinkamena.

So much awesome possibilities for this humorously nostalgic story. :rainbowlaugh:

WHAT HAVE I DONE!?

My life is now officially over. I broke my one rule. The ONE RULE!

2624196I once got challenged into a shadow game... it didn't end well.
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/p480x480/564535_493562277369611_2037232403_n.jpg
I think the closest these kids would get to "The Shadow Realm" would be of them playing in some back alley behind Sugar Cube Corner.

2624163 Seriously, after playing at so many local touneys one tends to lose track of other things. I used to love spending my time staring at my collection and maximizing my counters. Back before they banned a few cards, a certain Black Magician and a trap card, I was able to pull some crazy moves. I even managed to pull a Yugi to win against a Last Turn Deck and ONLY because I was allowed to go first. Had he destroyed my one monster and face done facedown, I'd a totally lost! xD

My opponent sets down one card in magic&trap field, summons Jogen the Spiritualist, ends his turn, declares activation as I finish drawing my card, and I surprise him with the ONLY facedown card! "I activate ENEMY CONTROLLER!" his face... was priceless. He got too cocky and didn't take out my Gemini Elf! XD

The rest is history :p

Great... now I miss my cards :pinkiesad2:

2624561 I got into Yu-Gi-Oh when the original anime came around and stayed through the first two seasons of GX. I got back into it with 5D's but I don't have as much time to collect so as much I would love to get more up to date cards I don't have the means of doing so. The anime however has hit a low point for me with Zexal, it's just too cheesy and a terrible rip off of Dragon Ball. (Seriously the duel gazers just scream scouters.)

2624598 I haven't enjoyed the anime since the series finale and bonus arc to give Yugi closure that we got exclusively in America. Aired later in japan. Still, nothing after that first series really managed to get me to feel for any of the characters. The rest were mostly just to see what they'd do with the new cards and see what effects they had. Not that they always stuck to what they really did in the actual card game till much later series. And even then...

And I totally feel you on time and money. Sucks to be a collector in this day and age.

Thanks again for liking the story!

I have some plans, a bit ambitious, but a plan, to give each of the kids their own set of cards. I might not be able to live up to it, but I'll do something eventually with it.

Graceful Rarity... Graceful Charity... I see what you did there... :ajsmug:

2624626 GX had potential but Jaden always had to be the hero and that meant the rest of the early cast members got shoved aside and underdeveloped. The series finale was perfect though.

5D's got off to a bit of a slow start but by the end of the first Season it picked up and became quite dark (it's the only one with most of the cast being full grown adults). I'll admit that the last arc of Season 3 fell into the same pitfall as the ending of Digimon Adventure 02 in the sense of adding too many concepts that didn't work. (The fight against Team New World should've been more fleshed out as opposed to having the first two set up the act for the third one and then have them reunite into Apoira. And the no Yuzei/Aki (or Akiza) ship at the end was a big dissapointment.)

Zexal I watched a few episodes but in addition to 4 Kids not sticking to a consistent dubbing schedule it never grew on and for good reasons. It was too cheesy and too much of a Dragon Ball rip off. I can't say much else or if it picks up after the whole number collecting arc in Season 1 though.

The original always will be the best. Did you know? Here in the U.S. reruns of the first season are airing on Nicktoons weekdays at 8:00 p.m. (Two episodes each day).

2624561 you get out then it pulls you back in.

Ill always fondly remember winning my local tourney. back when Cyber Stein and cyber jar were still playable.

Deck Goal: Draw Cyber Stein and Summon Blue Eyes White Dragon and mega morph it. How To: recycle cyber jar as much as possible : use spear cretins effect how to last Archfeind of Gilfer and Slate warrior will stall.

the only reason i'm sharing my deck is because most of those cards have been long since banned T_T.

For reference.
Flip summoning slate warrior increases it's attack and defense by 500 when destroyed it nerfs a monster's
attack and defense by 500.

Archfiend Of Gilfer when sent to the grave lowers a monsters attack by 500. it's counted as a equip magic card.
Cyber jar makes both players discard their hands redraw 7 cards and play any monsters below level 3

Spear Cretan can special summon monsters under so many attack / defense points.

Megamorph can be equipped to either side of the field it halves a monsters attack if your winning and doubles a monsters attack if your losing.

Cyber Stein by sacrificing 5000 life points you can special summon on fusion monster. Blue eyews white dragon has 4500 attack points since i lost 5000 LP summoning it that means i'm behind in LP thus megamorph can double it's attack.

The rest of my cards being level four or lower monsters with either high defense high attack (goblin attack force :) ) or good effects like magic cylinder or magician of faith. (yeah my deck was full of rares)
@The more you know.
I also used to run a Crystal Beast and Gladiator decks.

*SPOILER BELOW*

2624650 you mean the finale when Yugi beats Jaden because Yugi sabotaged Jayden deck with winged kuriboh in the start of the series.

*SPOILER END*

I loved 5D's and as for Zexal i just watched the most recent episode yesterday still collecting numbers. *spoilers but who cares it's zexal* also in a episode i watched a year ago. He goes super saiyan *not kidding*

2626833 Yeah I know, it's like they ran out of ideas. Not to mention Yuma is even worse then Jaden, why because Yuma talks way too much. And of course the whole Astral thing is a poor attempt at riding the sucess of Yami Yugi/Atem from the classic series.

2628172 Actually that's a common thing with the yugioh series. same with every main character having a unarmed mc guffin at their disposal.

Yugi. had Yami and the millennium items also friendship.

Jayden has winged kuriboh his Neo card/hero deck also magical cosplaying powers.also yubell and the asian guy >.>

Yusei has his Signer Mark no duel spirit though his Mcguffin signer crimson dragon thingy.

and finally Yuma has Astral he has like 500 mcguffins his number cards witch fit most any situation. it's a quick writer escape hatch also he fuses with astral in one episode and goes supersaiyan.

Hahaha, I like it! I would have liked to see more detail about the game (I only know Yu Gi Oh! from the Abridged Series) but this was cute for a quickie.

I've read one other Yu-Gi-Oh fic on this site. It was the only other one I was able to find at the time, detailing the duel between the CMC and Diamond/Silver. I liked the concept, and I thought it was a shame that it was the only one there was at the time. In order to tell this kind of story well, it requires both a detailed understanding of the game and the ability to choose a fitting play style for each character that works for the story. I can tell you have the former, at least up to the era of Synchros, while the latter is to be determined since we haven't progressed enough in the story to see each character's play style. Silver uses Naturia, but given the fact that she has multiple decks, it's unknown at this point if it's her signature archetype.

This chapter could probably use a quick run through the editing room, but it wasn't anything that affected the story's coherence. Silver should probably see the doctor about her infection smile, and I wasn't aware they were selling "big inflatable arms waving inflatable ponies" in Equestria. Someone should talk with their marketing team about redundancy in their naming.

Thanks for the contribution to the Diamond Cutters. Always enjoy seeing the community growing and being productive, especially when it somehow relates to Yu-Gi-Oh!

2636711 Thank you! I'll try and fit in what I can. One thing I had planned for DT and CMC is just that. We'll grow with them as duelists and learn bit by bit. Sadly I don't know how much I can fit those into 30 minutes but, you will learn!

2638958

Old joke. Hit or miss sadly. I didn't translate it word for word though, so became more obscure. I'll try and avoid adding references that are so vaguely worded. My memory isn't what it used to be, but this is what it was a reference to. Though, references are supposed to be hit or miss, I still feel that I could have worded it better in the story. Idea popped up instantly as I pondered to find a quick way to describe Silver's growing annoyance.

Thanks for catching that infectios smile (I swore I typed infectious.) I really do want to go back and edit a lot of stuff; Including fleshing out the chapter in the earlier bits. Problem I have is that least for the foreseeable future of this story, it will remain locked to thirty-minute prompts. I will likely be basing each chapter's premise off of prompts for a given card.

Now, while it will be very slice of life - you'll notice the absence of a crossover tag since this is more of an adaptation - I'll eventually get to the fillies acquiring their own decks; some being sooner than others.

As a quick rundown, I'll mostly be aiming for a very natural progression as how I'd see these girls getting introduced to the game. So, while Diamond had 14 games to figure out the basics, the CMC will be more interactive. We'll learn through them. As kids who don't have access to internet and on the fly access to rulings. Silver Spoon is going to have a bit to say. We might even see things that are purposely made up to give somepony an edge, perhaps?

DT will grow as a better duelist, and this will use a mix of real cards, but to avoid any legalities I'll try to mix in original cards that aren't too broken within the spectrum of the game we know now. I do want this to be a parody not a how to series. The main focus with this series is more about the discovery and what sort of social connections these games tend to open up.

I would like to eventually, once we really get to that point, make a side-series that is about the duels themselves. A more fleshed out story with the focus being on the start of the whole Po-Neigh-Oh! game and why such a delicate hobby can be played by non-unicorns. No promises as to when that'll happen, though likely after everyone gets well enough established into the game.

One thing I will say, is that I am going to add more chapters in the coming weeks after my move is complete. Till all things are sorted out, I'll be tinkering away at fleshing out the universe a bit for possibly that side story, or a stand alone. I have 4 ways I can go, but that will be left for when and if it comes to that. For the time being, I appreciate the feedback immensely and hope that this doesn't prove too disappointing for anyone.

I can't answer too much, as my original reply was far too spoilery to begin with, but I will say that SS does love her Naturias - it's a main deck. Silver, however, has certain quirks that'll pop-up eventually - if they aren't all too evident in this chapter enough already - that will show she does indeed play with more than just those monsters.

As story centered as it might become, a lot of chapters will be named after cards; not all directly worded as the card perhaps, but when appropriate. And be heavily limited to 30 minute prompts. This reason alone is why I haven't gone up and done edits; it shows what I managed to do in under 30 minutes without restraint. I'm kinda proud of it. This is also why I'm considering so many routes. One with limits and another with no time constraints.

I really like the idea behind Diamond Cutters. DT has been my top three fav filly in the show. I just hope it continues to grow. So many stories yet to be told with these fillies. We all have that one story in us we just gotta share, and I hope we see more of that as we go forward!

2640236
I did get your reference. The two 'inflatable's just caught my eye. I can see a good story being made out of the growth of the five as duelists. I just recently watched the entirety of Hikaru no Go, which has a similar concept, and I found that a real display of growth is what really makes a story like that work.

I remember back when I made decks for the entire cast of MLP. Diamond got Malefic Skill Drain, Silver got Monster Mash, Sweetie got Watts, Scootaloo got E-Heros, and Apple Bloom got Naturias. I'm definitely all for a story combining the two elements.

My Fire Emblem instincts tell me that Silver will end up as the least threatening duelist while Sweetie Belle will end up as the strongest, but I'm sure you have different ideas in mind. We'll have to wait and see whose story this really is.

Just waiting for DT to cheat in this game.

AB: Wait a minute, did ya'll just summon three monsters in one go?

DT: Yeah, so?

AB: That's against the rules ain't it?

DT: SCREW THE RULES I HAVE MONEY!!!

You know...
I can kind of see that cover picture as something in a Cardcaptor Sakura-type show.
"The secrets of Bronies! Were all a mystery! But when this mighty laptop opened, the memes were all set free!"

This story gave me flashbacks. I have this old friend who once got me playing that card game. My story is much like Diamond's, only I never got into it much (nor any other such card game). Sometimes, we'd both rig our decks to see how well our strategies would work against one another under the perfect conditions. Interesting matches, they were.

4168886 Yeah, I used to be sort of like Diamond. The difference was I had 9 friends that got into the game, we used to do throw flash plays where turns were no longer than 10 seconds per turn. Gamble Ultras, Supers, Rares for Secret Rares and parallel holos in actual poker. I once even scored a new Game Cube with Skies of Arcadia for my Head of Exodia from the Duelist GBA game.

I had lady luck on my side. It was some of the best times I had growing up. You'd a loved it. We were total nerds and some even thought it was gangsta. :twistnerd:

Fun people. Very diverse. All coming together under one common interest.

A card game.

4168985
It's kinda crazy, the sorts of things that can bring people together, eh?

4169090 Life is an RPG. You never know who you'll meet on your adventures.

Certainly is what inspired this fic, it's core message at least, bringing people together. Ponies Play Magic: The Gathering actually did really well, certainly makes up for the lack of delays this thing suffered. Maybe once I get around to doing some actual writing with my Octavia and Vinyl story I'll start putting more attention to my many neglected Diamond Tiara stories I've felt too inadequate to finish or continue.

4169576
I hope you get around to something soon. I do enjoy Octavia and Vinyl stories, as well as tales of Diamond Tiara.

Yu-gi-oh is laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaameeeeeeeeeeeeee. Magic all the way.

...This was cool though. I certainly enjoy nerdism inside a short fic. Often I get...ehh...weary when a whole other thing is referenced in a fic, like yu-gi-oh or cards, but uhm....you did great here! I certainly had fun reading it.

5649290 If you're a Magic fan then you'll love this, by someone who procrastinates far less then I, https://www.fimfiction.net/story/159122/masters-of-magic-the-gathering read it all the way through and it was certainly a damn fine surprise to see how it goes from innocent for fun gameplay to hardcore to 'What just happened?' moments.

And thanks for the kind honest words, they mean a lot. And I know how you feel about the reference stuff, I just really love card games and gaming in general. The social aspects of games like Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! and even Pokemon, it all just felt so fast paced and thrilling. But it all started out with just that one friend. The one who jumped into the world of TCG with me. That experience is all I wanted to show off with this story originally, how we get into these games. How we affect others with our passions.

I only wish I had the time and the heart to invest into giving it a serious go at finishing this story, I might someday once I finish working on my Sweetie Belle story. I'd like to break my record of one fic per year. lol

TL;DR Glad to hear you found it fun! That's all I really wanted to pass on with this. Nerdism rocks.

5650264 Immediately, I stopped. I went to the story. and now my night is settled. You...gorgeous person you.

5650264 Oh yeah? I believe I started playing D&D a while back. Ever since then...man...I went full-blown into nerdism. Man...I really like people that are chill with card games and shit. Conversations with them (such as you obviously) are what I look for.

But enough! I MUSSSSTTT go read this extremely valuable piece of work that is, Magic The Gathering in Equestria.

5650276 I wholly agree. Please do, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the story. It's been a while since I've had fun just being able to relax and enjoy a nice conversation about cards. It's something awesome just going through your cards, binders, and friends just seeing how you can improve on your own and their strategies and help each other just make that perfect deck through many trials and errors, we spent more time deck building and working on combos in a day then actually playing at times. lol

5650269 Aww, you flatterer you. So nice to meet other lovers of nerdism. Hope you're enjoying the story. Have fun!

5650352 Haha. XD I actually have a deck I have seriously been working on for about...9 years now. It changes pretty much every year, but has the same concept. I mean, it's a five colored deck called, "Five finger palm exploding heart technique" (Great reference right?), and it literally changes like...twice a year.

First it was about Sunburst.

Then gates.

Then sunburst again.

Then Squirrels. (Don't know what I was thinking)

And most recently, and my favorite, Maelstrom Archangel! I dunno, but the novelty of playing an Angel for five, smashing my opponent's face, and playing a card for free (Like relentless assault and attacking again or Time Warp!), then proceeding to just...straight up maim my opponent. God...so satisfying!

It's my precious, truly. <3

....Now, I will stop nerding out all over your comment section. :moustache:

5650365 If ever a place on fimfic to nerd out over a card game, it'd be here. But since it's Magic, I hope you swamp that awesome author of that Magic fic with even more! xD

Wacky Waving Balloon Ponies are now canon.

Thank you Silver Spoon, your antics are most adorable. Here's hoping you get some focus next season!

totally headcanon, Silver Spoon is a closet NERD!:twistnerd:

7145514 She's one of my favorite fillies since forever now. Just wish I had kept going with this seeing how little love she was getting those days. Thanks for reading! Sad to see we still need more Silver Spoon stories that focus on her and not just some love interest to some colt whenever she so much as is mentioned to enjoy nerdy things.

Here's hoping I get the chance to re-continue this piece this year.

7145936 well season 5 pretty much redeemed her along with Diamond simply by association (a little too fast if ask me) but while the fandom may be more accepting of Diamond and Silver after Crusaders of The Lost Mark the fact that they are no longer bullies may mean a gradual faze out by the writers since they never cared about these two before.

I will however say I am pleased with the character development they got in the back ground of that last Applebloom episode "On your marks"

Silver Spoon was proven to be proficient at baking and taking absolute JOY in serving pie to Diamond and another unnamed filly at the table before her self.:pinkiehappy:

Headcanon CONFIRMED!:yay:

Serving Spoon is canon!:raritywink:
