Chapter 17: Setting the Plan In Motion (part 01) [revised]

As the group made their way to the hotel, Star’s mind was abuzz with what he had just learned. Not only was he wielding one of the most powerful artifacts in all of Equestria, but he was part of a prophecy to save the world. While lost in thought, Star felt a tug on his jacket. He looked to see that Fluttershy was trying to get his attention.

“Are you okay, Star? You seem distracted,” she asked with concern.
“I’m fine ‘Shy,” he replied. “Just a lot of information to process is all.”
“Well don’t fret too much Star. Y'all may be part of some sorta ancient prophecy ta the world 'n all. But just remember, no matter what you always got us ta watch yer back,” assured Applejack.

Star couldn't help but smile at her words.

Classic Applejack, chuckled Star.
“So what does everypony wanna do?” asked Spike.
“Well Mac, Bloom, and I were gonna head to the booths ta win so more prizes,” Applejack grinned.
“Ooh, can I join you?” Pinkie grinned.
“Ah don’t see why not,” shrugged Applejack.
“Yippee!” Pinkie exclaimed.

“What about you, bro?” asked Star.
“Well, me and Sweetie were gonna go out to celebrate my win today,” he grinned.
“And I simply must head back to the hotel to freshen up,” spoke Rarity.
“That leaves me, Fluttershy, Twilight and Star to hit up the ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet down the street," chimed Rainbow Dash.
“Aww yeah! I'm starvin’,” shouted Star.
“Sure, I am getting a little hungry,” replied Twilight.
“Sounds lovely," smiled Fluttershy.

Star noticed somepony was missing.

“Say, anypony seen Phantom Heart?" he asked.
"She went back to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow,” answered Fluttershy. “After seeing the duels from today, she said she was super excited.”
“Well, let's get going. My belly needs some food,” chuckled Star.

With that, the group then departed to their separate destinations.

While on her way back to the hotel, Rarity became rather annoyed at the crowded streets (due to her bumping into a random pony, griffon, or the occasional dragon).
“I do so hate large crowds," groaned Rarity.

She bumped into and random passerby, and they both fell to the ground. As she regained her composure, she looked at the pony she bumped into. It was a slate blue earth stallion with a long black mane tied back in a ponytail. He wore a light blue short-sleeved shirt with a jet black long-sleeved undershirt, and black pants with a black belt. As his light blue eyes met her, she felt her heart flutter.

Oh my, what a handsome stallion, she thought.
“Oh dear, are you alright miss?” asked the stallion.
“Y-Yes,” answered Rarity.

The stallion then helped Rarity to her hooves.

“You weren't hurt were you?” he inquired, with concern.
“No, I'm quite alright,” she spoke.

The stallion then looked deep into her azure eyes.

“Pardon me for staring, but you have to most beautiful eyes I have ever seen,” he complimented.

Rarity felt her face heat up with such flattery.
“My, my. You certainly are quite the flatterer mister…”
“Runner…Storm Runner. But everypony calls me Storm,” he smiled.
“Very pleased to meet you, Storm. My name is Rarity.”

Storm took her hand and gave it a gentle peck.

“A lovely name for a lovely mare. Yours is truly a beauty that is a rarity,” he flattered.
“Quite the charmer, aren't you Storm?” she giggled.
“Some say that,” he grinned.

The two shared a brief laugh.

“My dear Rarity, I hope I'm not being too forward. But would you do me the honor of accompanying me on this lovely evening?”

Rarity was speechless at how effortlessly he asked her out.
Oh, my. How could I say 'no' to such a handsome stallion, she thought.

With a flip of her mane, she looked at Storm with a half-lidded gaze.
“I would love to, Storm.”

The two headed down the busied street.

As Star and the gang headed to the restaurant, Star was still lost in thought.

This is insane. How can I possibly save Equestria? I mean I don’t even know how to use this thing, thought Star, as he clutched the Millennium Pendant.
Greetings, young Star Driver.

Star then looked to his left a translucent image of Moon.

Moon? What are you doing here? asked Star.
I sensed that your were troubled by something, he replied.
Yeah, I just found out a little about you and the events that led to the creation of this pendant...and about Ehmah…
I see… It has been quite some time since I heard that name.
I know you two were close…
Yes...we were…

Star couldn’t help but notice the somber tone in his reply.

Do you have any regrets?
No…she needed to be stopped. I just wished I didn’t have to banish her to the Abyss.
Well, it seems that she may be soon returning to our world.
What do you mean?
We were told by Princess Celestia that Ehm’s return is drawing near, and it’s up to me to stop her.
I see…

As Star was having this internal conversation, he accidentally bumped into a random pony. The impact caused both of them to fall to the ground.

“Star, are you okay?” asked Twilight, as she looked back.
“Yeah, I'm fine,” he replied, as he rubbed his head.

He looked up to see that Fluttershy offered her hand to help him up.

“Thanks, 'Shy,” smiled Star, as he accepted her gesture.

As he got to his hooves, he saw the pony he bumped into. It was a stallion that was dressed in a dark blue cloak with a spiral galaxy on the back.

“Sorry about that. I guess I should've been watching where I was going,” said Star extending his hand.

The cloaked stallion then accepted Star's gesture.

“That's alright,” said the stallion, as he rose to his feet.

As the stallion looked at Star he pointed at him in disbelief.

“Hey, aren't you two the ponies who just dueled?”
“Yup, I'm Star Driver. The next ‘King of Games’,” he proudly spoke. “That’s Rainbow, but she’s still a little huffy about the match.”
“Whatever Star,” pouted Rainbow Dash.

The stallion then removed his cloak to reveal a midnight blue unicorn stallion. He had a long silver mane and dark silver eyes. He wore a dark gray crew-neck short-sleeved shirt with black jeans.

“The name’s Darkshine Swirl,” he said.
“Pleased to meet ya, Darkshine,” Star Driver smiled.

Darkshine then retrieved his hidden duel disc.

“Say Star Driver. Do you have the time for a quick duel? I didn't make it to my qualifier for the tournament and I'd like to duel against somepony that made it in.”
“Really?” replied Star.

Twilight tapped her chin, as she tried to remember where she heard that name before.

“Wait, Darkshine Swirl? I've heard of you. You’re a very talented duelist,” she stated.

This caused Darkshine to slightly blush.

“You should duel him, Star. I'd love to see him duel firsthand,” suggested Twilight.

Star scratched the back of his head.
“I don't know. I just had a tough duel with Rainbow.”

Rainbow then nudged Star in the side with her elbow.
“What's the matter Star? Scared you'll lose?” she teased.

When Star turned to face her she could tell that she got under his fur (after all that's her specialty).

“I am not!” he shouted.
“Prove it,” she smugly grinned.

With a slight eye twitch, Star turned to Darkshine.

“Okay Swirly, you're on!” Star said, he activated his Duel Disc.

Darkshine's eye slightly twitched upon hearing that nickname.
“Don't call me, Swirly,” he flatly spoke, while he activated his Duel Disc. “Now, let's do this!”
You ready, Moon? asked Star.
Of course, Star, he replied.

Once again, the Millennium Pendant began to glow and oscillate rapidly.

“PONIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!”

Once again Star appearance changed.
Let's duel!” said Star, as he drew his card. “I'll go first. And I'll summon 'Celestial Hero Yin' in attack mode.”

Err… I'll play this card facedown and end my turn.”

Star then looked at Darkshine with a competitive grin.
You're pretty good, Swirly.”

That caused Darkshine’s eye to slightly twitch.
“I'll forgive you for calling me Swirly just this once,” he smirked.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the festival, the Apple clan were enjoying the various games they had to offer.
“Come on, guys. I see a ‘Ring Toss’ game over here,” Pinkie spoke with glee.
“Slow down girl. We got all night to enjoy the festival. Ya don’t have ta do every little thing a once, y’know,” spoke Applejack, trying to keep up with the hyperactive mare.
“But that’s what makes it fun,” she grinned.

Applejack merely rolled her eyes.
“Pinkie? Is that you?” called out a voice.

The group turned around in the direction of the voice to see a goldenrod pony running up to the group. This tall, slim earth stallion had a curly dark mane and tail and energetic light green eyes. He wore a yellow collared short-sleeved shirt and black pants. Pinkie instantly knew who it was and ran up to happy tackled the stallion.

“Cheese! It’s super duper awesome to see you!” beamed Pinkie Pie, as she enveloped him is a lung-crushing hug.
“It’s…nice…to…see…you…too…Pinkie…” Cheese Sandwich replied, trying not to lose consciousness.

She released him from her embrace, to which he gasped for air.

“What brings you here?” she asked.
“Just came by to check out the tournament,” he answered. “I saw your match earlier today. It’s a shame you didn’t win.”
“I know. But there’s always next year,” she smiled.
“That’s true,” laughed Cheese.

The others made their way over to the two.

“Howdy there Cheese. It’s been a while,” greeted Applejack.
“Hey there, Applejack. Long time no see.”
“Y’all here to watch the tournament?”
“You know it!” he grinned.
“Well, we’re off to play so more games. If ya want we’d be happy if ya joined us,” she offered.
“I’d love to,” he said, as he leapt into the air. “Come on, Pinkie. There’s a ‘Ring Toss’ game with our names on it.”
“Yeah! Let’s go!” she spoke with glee.

The two ponies then race to the booth. Applejack couldn’t help but chuckle.

Well, at least she has somepony that can keep up with her.

Back at the duel, unknown to Star and Darkshine, a small crowd had gathered around to watch the two of them duel. As they looked on, Twilight, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash couldn’t help but be impressed with Darkshine.

“Wow, he is really good,” Twilight spoke in awe. “It's really a shame that he didn’t make it into the tournament.”
“Yeah, he's giving Star a run for his money,” chuckled Rainbow.

On the field, after he drew his card, Darkshine proceeded with his turn.

“I summon The Fabled Rubyruda in Attack Mode.”

I have to say Darkshine. You're not too bad,” Star said with a cocky grin.
“You too,” Darkshine smirked.

The two noticed the small crowd that had gathered to watch their duel.
Guess we better give them a show,” chuckled Star.

--------------------

As they were walking down the busied street, Rarity and Storm were enjoying some crystal ice cream.

“You didn’t have to pay for both of them,” giggled Rarity.
“I know, but a gentlecolt always pays for a lovely mare,” he replied with a wink.

His comment made her slightly blush.

“My Storm, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were trying to win me over,” she smiled.
“Is it working?” he grinned.
“It might be,” she teased.
“Can I interest you in having dinner with me?”
“Aren’t we bold this evening?” cooed Rarity.
“Shall I take that as a ‘yes’?” he queried.
“Indeed it is my good fellow,” Rarity smiled.

He offered his arm, to which Rarity wrapped hers around it. The two walked down a secluded street, devoid of the busied crowd.

“And where will we be dining?” she asked.
“It’s a quaint little restaurant. Sort of a hidden gem if you will,” explained Storm. “But they have the best food in the Crystal Empire.”
“Well, it sounds like this will be an enjoyable dinner,” sighed Rarity.

As they were walking, she quickly noticed that the surrounding buildings were run down and abandoned.

“Storm, darling. Where was this restaurant again?” she asked.
“It’s not too far. We’ll be there shortly,” he responded with a smile.

It was then, she noticed his blue eyes flickered with a subtle light green flash.

That was rather odd, she thought.

After a few moments, the two reached the fancy-looking restaurant. As Storm opened the door, Rarity felt an eerie chill run down her back.

Something’s not right, she thought.

Storm noticed her hesitation.
“Is there something wrong, my dear?” asked Storm.

As she was about to respond, she saw the restaurant’s entrance slightly flicker from a fancy restaurant to a shady-looking building. It was then Rarity knew something was amiss and stepped back.

“What are you playing at, Storm?” she demanded.
“Whatever do you mean?” he asked, with an arched eyebrow.

She fired a magical blast at the restaurant. Within seconds, the image of the restaurant disappeared. Storm turned back around to see a fuming fashionista.

“What do you think you were going accomplish by trying to trick me?” she shouted.
“Well…” he said, as his body was enveloped in a bright green light.

Rarity shielded her eyes from the light. When it faded, she looked to see that Storm was a changeling in disguise. His shirt was now gone and his abdomen was wrapped with a light green sash, and his black pants were now tattered.

“I was just following the orders of my queen.”
“A changeling?!” gasped Rarity. “Well, if you want me you’re not getting me without a fight.”

To this, Storm merely chuckled.
“Something funny?”
“Do you really think I would try to take on one of the Elements of Harmony alone?” he smirked before snapping his fingers.

Rarity looked around to see that she was surrounded by a horde of twenty-five changelings.
How could I have fallen for such an obvious trap? she groaned.
“Now, my dear. You have two options here. A, you can come with us willingly or B, we can take you by force. It’s your choice,” he spoke in a smug tone.

With no other choice, Rarity used her magic to form light blue aura armor around her body (breastplate, hip guard, gauntlets, boots, shield, and a sword).
“As tempting as those offers sound,” she said, before delivering a slash to a group of changelings to create a path. “I’ll have to go with option ‘C’, none of the above.”

She used her armor to propel herself through the opening she created. As she ran the changelings were not too far behind.

I have to warn Princess Celestia!, she thought.

Before she could get too far, Storm appeared in front of her.
“You’re not going anywhere, my dear,” he leered.
“And who's gonna stop me?!” she stated, as she charged him.

Before her sword could make contact, Storm vanished.
Where’d he g-

Her thoughts were halted and she felt a sudden force impact her stomach. As she looked down, she saw Storm had delivered a fierce punch. The force of the blow launched her into a nearby wall. The impact caused the breath to be knocked out of her and her aura armor disappeared. She struggled to maintain consciousness and fell to her knees. Before she fell to the ground, Storm caught her in his arms.

“Sorry my dear. But I cannot fail my queen. Even for a beauty such as yours,” he whispered.
“Y-You…won’t…g-get…a…way…with…thi...s…” she spoke, before losing consciousness.

As he draped her over his shoulders, he turned to his horde.

“First target…captured!”

Okay, it’s my go,” Star stated, drew his card. “I sacrifice 'Taurus' to 'Celestial Hero Sentry' in Attack Mode.”

She wielded a silver shield and an onyx-colored staff.

Now Airess attack his ‘Rubyruda’ with Zephyr Cannon!”

The avian maiden then gathered a swirl of light blue wind energy to form a large sphere. As she took aim, the winged maiden launched her attack at the opposing monster.

“Not so fast, Star. I discard ‘Fabled Dyf’ to negate your attack,” countered Darkshine.

Before the sphere could contact the avian adversary, it is dispelled.
Fine then. ‘Sentry’ take out that bird with Spear of the Just.”

The armored the used the magic to transform her staff into a spear. She then charged the opposing monster.
“I can't stop that one,” sighed Darkshine.

With one thrust, she delivered a strike that destroyed the avian monster. Darkshine’s Life Points were reduced to 3100.
That does it for now.”

Back at the group, Rainbow’s stomach began to growl loudly.
“Ugh, I’m starving. I’ll meet you guys at the restaurant,” groaned Rainbow Dash.
“Okay, Rainbow. We shouldn’t be too long,” replied Fluttershy.
“See ya guys there,” spoke as she took off down the street.
“Oh, well. She’s gonna miss this awesome match,” said Twilight.

Back on the field, Darkshine drew his next card.
“I activate the Spell Card ‘Graceful Charity’, which lets me draw three cards as long as I discard two,” he explained.

After he drew three cards, he sent two cards from his hand to the Graveyard.

“One of the cards that I sent to the Graveyard was ‘Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World’. And thanks to one of his special abilities, I can destroy one of your monsters. And I choose your ‘Sentry’.

At that moment, a dark dragon-like claw emerged from the center of the field and grabbed the armored maiden.

Sentry!” shouted Star.

The claw then tightened its grip and destroyed the defenseless maiden.
Err...”

Once again, a dark portal appeared high above the field. A dark gust of energy rapidly fell to the field. As it landed, the dark energy swirled around the large figure outlining its silhouette. With a mighty flap of its wings, the dark energy dissipated to reveal a colossal dark gray demon-like dragon. the fearsome beast's horns that protruded from various parts of its body (six on its head, one on each elbow, and one on each knee), skeletal coverings on its torso and pelvis, large black wings, razor claws, and bone-crushing fangs.

Whoa…” Star said in awe.
“Now, ‘Grapha’ attack his Airess with Dark World Claw!” ordered Darkshine.

The massive dragon gathered its dark energy into its left claw until it was engulfed in a dark violet aura. The fearsome beast swung his mighty claw and instantly destroyed the defending maiden. The shock wave caused Star to slightly stumble as his Life Points were reduced to 2700.

Err…”
“That'll end my turn,” stated Darkshine.

Star stared down the colossal dragon before him.
Taking down that behemoth won’t be easy but I know my deck won’t let me down.

He prepared to draw his card.

"Alright, let’s check the deck,” Star said, as he drew his card.

He looked at his card, and a smirk appeared on his face.

The winged maiden once emerged on the field. Her stats were changed to 2300/2000.

“I draw!” Darkshine spoke as he drew his card.
As he looked at his card, Star saw a fiery spark that illuminated within them.

A little baby monster in a baby bouncer appeared on the field. It had pinkish skin, a dark purple mask, and a pacifier with a weird eye design at the base.
“Next, I tune ‘Fabled Oltro’ with ‘Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World’.”
The three monsters are then transformed into balls of white light.
“From within the eternal darkness, these two monsters call upon the true king of the dark angels to rain down his divine justice!”
They are then shot through a series of green rings.
“Now come forth my ultimate beast...Fabled Leviathan!”

At that moment, the field began to quake. From the city street arose a large white throne which had skulls placed all around it. In a red flash of light, a large humanoid creature appeared on the throne. He had long red hair, lilac skin, red wings that protruded from his back, and sharp claws. He donned decorative full-body armor trimmed with golden-yellow plating and green gems.

Uh-oh!”
“Now my beast, attack his ‘Airess’ with Fabled Judgement!”

While on his throne, the winged monarch lifted his hand into the air. A dark cloud then began to swirl above his throne. The clouds began to roll with crimson bolts of lightning. With a swift motion of his hand, the cloud launched a barrage of crimson bolts at the defending maiden.

Oh crap…”
