Sunset Shimmer is having the worst day of her life. She used to be important. She was the personal student of Princess Celestia. She was a future leader of Equestria. She was the kind of mare that everypony envied.

Rumors go around Ponyville regularly, that's a given, but when a rumor is all you hear all day, from everypony you come across, you start to wonder if it's truly gossip or if there's some truth behind it all. So when Rarity approaches Applejack and asks to help her find this rumored Witch of Everfree, the Apple family's big sister has to believe, right?

Or is this just another one of Rarity's adventures that loves to go horribly wrong?

An alternate universe story spawned from the idea of "What if Twilight was a Witch."
This story catalogues her meeting her 5 friends, 1 friend per chapter.

The Dark tag as well as the Death and Profanity warnings are for the third chapter only and is minor but important.

The Witch of the Everfree... a tale that has spread among all who live by the ever illustrious forest, to whom the witch truly is, no one knows apart from the one herself... until now. Twilight Sparkle had lived in the Everfree throughout most of her long life, since the corruption she was alone until not long ago when she met few companions. Trained along side her sisters through bond in arcane magic, given true immortality, she continued her studies alone only every now and again seeing how her race fared. Now, forty years after she was dubbed a witch by her race, three little girls stumble through her woods in search of the ever mysterious "witch", what could really happen? read to find out.

Clarifications:
Many have wondered what Twilight looks like and such so to clarify, she does not look like a human female, she retains her fur coat, she is of human height and has hands. The facial structure is more detailed such as where the eyebrows should be there is a darker patch of coat much in the color of her mane.

The story starts a few episodes in, around halfway through season one I would say, some shall stay canon whilst some with alter, I am sorry for this inconvenience.

Twilight is still Twilight in every way, though she has been with little to no contact throughout her life apart from when the Everfree retained people, in such her words would become haggard sometimes so that's why you will probably go "huh" when you first see her talk to the CMC.

The citizens of the Know World have a inherent fear of what they can't control.
Under the influence of the celestial alicorns they feel safe, because they can regulate the weather, herd the critters, tending the plants. They consider the "wild" and "unpredictable" dangerous, because lethal beasts and ancient evils lurks in the shadows of the land, and the furter you go the worst it become. The common pony shuns places like the Everfree, because they are unnatural to the logical order of a daily sheltered life.
Not everypony sees it like this. Somepony embrace the wild, respect and worship its spirits and creatures. They have rediscovered the lore of the Old World, renewing its rituals and believes, harnessing its energies. The common pony shuns these individuals, branding them as wicked and hating them.
Its a shame they shunned Discord really, the common pony is so boring and narrow minded.

One night every month, Rarity creeps out of her house and sneaks unseen into the Everfree Forest. Her saddlebags are full and her destination is secret. She is going in search of The Witch, and Rarity will find her. But some monsters we create ourselves and others aren't monsters at all.

Celestia, sacred paladin of the Solar Knights, has been on many journeys to the perilous Everfree Forest in the name of defending her kingdom from all kinds of magical menaces. But when she takes on a mysterious witch in the heart of the forest, she finds the values at her very heart challenged by the treacherous venture. Her quest to defend faceless subjects from a dangerous entity becomes one to save a troubled soul from its own misery, and, in the process, perhaps heal the pain buried deep within her own.

Midnight Storm, a Kirin who fled civilization after a lifetime of persecution, now lives in the Everfree Forest. She is content with living in the wild, the forest is filled with creatures to practice hunting and fighting with, and she doesn’t have to hide what she is for fear of ponies attacking her. She has made friends with Zecora, a zebra shaman and fellow outcast. But Midnight’s life takes an interesting turn when Zecora attempts to reintroduce her to pony society.

A cross between Past Sins by Pen Stroke and The Witching Hour by Chaotic Ink.

As far as Rainbow Dash is concerned, there can be no forgiveness for Wallflower Blush. She's a memory-thieving witch, and isn't to be trusted. Even months later, Rainbow is still completely uninterested in being Wallflower's friend.

But when Wallflower asks the girls if they'll help her recover a rare flower from the Everfree Forest, the lure of adventure (and a few well-placed words from Sunset Shimmer) convinces Rainbow Dash to give friendship a chance.

Rainbow joins Wallflower on a quest for action, glory, and the chance to 'strut her sick rock climbing skills'. Oh, and to get flowers, yeah.

But the dangers of the Everfree did not stop at Gloriosa Daisy. That which they seek lies in the most remote and gloomy depths of the forest, and it does not yield its secrets without a fight.

They set out hoping to find unique plants.

The forest is more than happy to oblige.
