Mistwake, a young hippogriff student, begins attending the School of Friendship. Her roommate is annoying, she can't stop thinking of home, and there's something off about her pink-haired professor. Horrors hidden in the dark are beginning to reveal themselves.

When her roommate starts coming back to their dorm in the middle of the night, she knows something is definitely wrong. Or is it? Students overworking isn't exactly breaking news. Then again, what exactly could she be working on in the middle of the night?

(Written for "A Change of Pace" Contest. This is my first piece conceived and written for a contest. I'm not exactly sure if I made it on time for the deadline because of timezone differences. If I did, neat. If not, I still like the story. Also, it's written for the Halloween season. Boom, two birds with one story.)

After Nightmare Moon was banished, the bat ponies were society's scrapgoats. Despite Celestia's best efforts, they exiled themselves. Now, a thousand years later, they have settled in the Everfree. When supplies start getting low and Timberwolves grow bolder, Night Lily must leave her home and live among the ponies, waiting for the right time to reveal herself and her people.

A thousand years can change everything. Civilizations, monuments, even legends can fade into nothing. When the Mare in the Moon returned, she was little more than an old story to most of the kingdom. And all stories fade with time.

The finals of the School of Friendship are on the way and the Young Six are doing whatever they can to prepare for it. A few days before the finals they encounter a young pony named Cosette, who quickly seems to befriend the Young Six. But things start to take a turn for the worse after Gallus makes the decision to visit the Castle of the Two Sisters along with his friends and the young pony.

It's the Era of Friendship, two millennia have passed since the mane seven brought everlasting harmony to Equestria. Time has moved on and their exploits and acts of heroism have faded into legends. Now join their descendants in 6 individual storytimes with Luna and Celestia as the descendants discover who their ancestors are, what they stood for and how they too have a destiny.

Along the way, Celestia and Luna must confront their past as well. Will they improve themselves by accepting the truth or will they succumb to their own despair? Two thousand years have passed...yet the pain never left, watching those they treasured lowered into the ground. Can they finally stop grieving and see the light as they face the shadows of their own fears and regrets? With everyone else living in perfect harmony and balance...can the alicorn princesses finally move on?

As Celestia and Luna learn lessons from beyond, questions arise. Why are the mane seven reappearing? Aren't these ponies part of the ethereal? If they no longer walk among those of Equestria, how is it they are being seen and even talked to? More importantly how does Celestia's Daughter, Starshine tie into all this? Is she responsible or could it be something else is at work here?
