I make some of my cover images by editing frames from episodes, movies, or related canon MLP videos. Sometimes I even combine materials from more than one frame. Because there's no direct source for my image online, this blog post might be the closest thing to a "source" I can link! 
That's how I got cover images for stories like the examples below.
