Juggling Too Many Jobs (Update on Commissioning SciComm Stories) · 11:16pm Nov 18th, 2019

Re-watching S9E11 Student Counsel the other day made me really relate to Starlight Glimmer. I am also currently in the non-stop business of a college teaching post, with students demanding my attention, and I want to help them. This term has turned out even crazier than usual as a last-minute change meant the sub-atomic physics course I usually teach next term is happening now. In addition to my other teaching duties of vectors, complex numbers, calculus, nuclear physics lab. Somehow I

Proposal: Commissioning Fanfiction for Science Communication · 9:31pm Jul 31st, 2019

I would like to invite comments on an idea I have for a future science communication fanfiction project. This has been taking shape in my head for some months, but it is only now I have had time to write up a plan.

Barbie, Oppenheimer, Barbenheimer · 12:14pm Aug 20th, 2023

This week, you get a break from my current series of contrived attempts to mix particle physics and pony episodes, and instead you get my perspective on attempts to mix plastic dolls and historical nuclear physics. It’s time to talk about Barbenheimer.

SciComm with Fanfic – Further details · 9:03pm Aug 8th, 2019

It was great to see lots of interest in the proposal in my last blog post. This has convinced me this project is worth pursuing, but also highlighted a few things I need to think about. I will now work on preparing a more detailed description of what I want, a full brief of the particle physics topics (I think my abstract on antimatter was perhaps a bit too abstract an illustration). I will then invite anyone interested to pitch me a (very brief) story idea. If I manage to stick to my summer

State of the Science Communicator · 12:14am Jan 28th, 2019

Apologies for not posting so much over the last two months. I have not been so active on Fimfiction for a while for various reasons. The past year has been difficult in more than one way. But I am hoping to be more active for 2019.

It seems a good time to reflect on what I am doing.

This post is excessively self-congratulatory. Should I try to be as cool as Rainbow Dash?

Or should I declare myself the Greatest and Most Powerfullest physics-themed pony fanfiction writer in Oxford University?

Science Communication with My Little Pony Fan Fiction · 6:04pm Dec 23rd, 2017

I have a new post on my Particle Gadgeteering blog, which is all about pony fiction. However (before you all rush off to read it) this one is not written for you (although you are still welcome to read and comment of course). This is my attempt to explain what I do on Fimfiction to my fellow science communicators, many of whom have only the haziest idea about what fan fiction is, and whose only knowledge of My Little Pony is vague memories of a plastic toy from thirty year ago. This is

Particle Physics with Pony Fanfic – Dark Matter and Neutrinos · 10:33pm Dec 10th, 2019

I gather some writers interested in my science communication project would appreciate some story ideas to help develop their own, so in this post I will give some of my thoughts on how to turn my given particle physics research topics into a story. I would, however, remind those thinking of participating that your don’t have to follow this. If you have a totally different idea

Stay Indoors. Take a trip to Geneva · 10:09pm Apr 9th, 2020

How are you all coping at the moment?

Here in England, I am stuck at home, allowed out once a day for exercise. It has been a confusing past few weeks. Things I had been planning for months were abruptly cancelled, and I then had to quickly make new plans. I am fortunate that I have a place to live and have a job. I have been trying to assist some others unfairly threatened with redundancy, which is rather stressful, much more for them than me.

GMBlackjack has now published a pony particle physics story I commissioned. Check out Daring Do and the Inexplicable Artifact. An A.K. Yearling adventure in which our pegasus hero discovers a mysterious object that appears to be shooting some sort of beam, but while it is evidently drawing a lot of power, it appears to have no effect whatsoever on anything in its path. Daring enlists the help of

Evaluation of Polar Vortex Reader Questionnaire · 9:00pm Jul 16th, 2019

Now catching up with the tasks I intended to do months ago. Here is a report on the reader questionnaire for Polar Vortex. Thanks to everyone who completed that. Sorry this is a bit technical and written for science communication evaluation nerds (I have done courses on this). I’ll write something fun, with Pinkie Pie in it, next week...

Pinkie’s Antimatter Adventure; Rainbow Magic – Writing pony science stories with Chat GPT · 12:18pm Jan 8th, 2023

Yesterday I decided to investigate this Chat GPT thing that I now hear so much about. And wow—this technology has really moved on since I last looked at it. We now have an AI engine which, given a simple prompt, will write a story for you in seconds.

This is the first conversation I had with it:

What is antimatter?

Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle seek to track down the causes of extreme cold weather at the Cloudsdale Weather Factory.

I started writing this two months ago, when, as residents of some parts of the Northern Hemisphere may recall, it was rather chilly. This saw a return of headlines about the Polar Vortex and a resulting spectrum of science stories, and a twitterstorm of science communicators trying to both correct misconceptions and cash in on the interest in a science topic.
